Many times it was through the constant pushing by our teachers, friends, and family and such recognition-gaining measures as the Honor Roll and the Honor Society that we were instilled with the desire to do our best to get the most out of our school opportunities. Because of this, each one of us has gained the knowledge now to decide his future ambition--to get a job, to get married, or to continue schooling for a future position. Much of our knowledge was obtained through active participation in classes. This was especially so in the Problems of American Democracy Class. There we were able to vote in general elections, take part in classroom discussions, and go to conferences, such as, the Model United Nations Conference at Hills- dale, Michigan, and the World Affairs Institute of Cincinnati, Ohio. Other examples where aetive participation was necessary was the laboratory classes in Physics and Chemistry. It was through this active work that studies were made more interesting. Besides the above mentioned accomplishments, we have learned to express ourselves more precisely and less fearfully. We have learned to meet and solve our problems by the scientific method. Above all, we have learned how to get along with others, by understanding their points of view as well as our own, and how to aid in the welfare of our country through applying our knowledge to better ourselves, as well as others. For these achievements, we feel we have merited our diplomas. by Lynette Rowe 16 MARLOW GENE ZIGIER SENIOR Miss Darla Jenkins QUEEN I ATTENDANTS Miss Phyllis Oppenheim Miss Mary Beth Hutchens Miss Judy Hendricks Miss Kay Gleason 19 HIGH SCHOOL Members of the board of education have the responsibility of providing adequate school opportunity for the youth of Montpelier. The club was organized because of the need for a football field which we would be proud to play on. At the homecoming game with Bryan this year, the field was dedicated in an im- pressive pvre-game program. We would like to thank the boosters club, who, when they planned and financed a new football field, made the wish of almost every 1959 Senior come true--a football field to be truly proud of. I FOOTBALL STORY Running out of 3 Split T offense, Coach Carl Peirano's Locomotives went through the 58-59 football season with '7 wins and 2 losses. Montpelier finished second in the league standings behind the powerful Bryan Bears. Nine of the boys that played, and helped win, this year were returning lettetmen. Of course these men did not make up a complete team, not were these nine the only ones to play a certain position. The fact that all the boys got a chance to play, and receive some experience, accounts for the 11 lettermen that will return next year to pick up where the graduating lettermen finished. Ronnie Calvin was our captain this year and Ron and Bob Brandt received the honor of being awarded the Kak Brown Award. Montpelier was honored to have three of their men on the Northwestern Ohio League All Star Team--they were Ron Calvin, center; Bob Bidwell, end; and Walt McKelvey, tackle. This year's Montpelier Locomotives had the best season they had seen in a long time. We wish the team and the coach the best of luck in years to come. BASKETBALL STORY The 1958-1959 basketball season, though not so successful as the football season, did provide many thrills and anxious moments for the fans. The team's 10-5 record was not truly indicative of the team's potential. Coach Bob Shulz, in his first year at the helm, substituted freely and tried many different combinations. Especially with the reserve squad, fans could see that Shulz was looking to the future. In spite of the won-loss record, a few of our players won laurels on the A11 County Team. Bob Bidwell, team captain, was named to the second team, and Marlow Zigler earned honorable mention. As the lettermen leave the team this year they, as well as the rest of the graduating seniors, wish the coach and the remaining men on the squad, the best of luck in the coming seasons. TRACK STORY Montpelier High School had reason to be proud of their track team this year. In the league meet held at Bryan, the team tied for first with Liberty Center. Miss Darla Jenkins reigned as Montpelier's Track Queen. Then at the district meet at Bowling Green, Pelier placed fourth, entitling some of the boys to go to the state track meet. Ron Calvin and Walter McKelvey went for the discus; Lawrence Eriksen for the 440; and Tom Ely, Dick Jenkins, Bob Logthy, Terry Zimmerman, and Lawrence Eriksen for the mile re- lay. Although the results were not so good as the district results, the school was proud of the boys. Ron Calvin. also, set new shot-put and discus records this year, both had been set in the 40's. The award is based on the senior player's asset to the team. In case of a tie, it is de- cided by scholastic ability. However, this year both boys qualified equally. Therefore it was the first time two players had received the award in the same year. This year the Montpelier football squad lost eight seniors. ROW 1: K. Mocherman, B. Hawkins, J. Snyder, L. Comedy, romance, and suspense were the basic ingredients of Calling All Carts, which was presented by the Montpelier High School junior class. The story concerned the entire Carr tribe, their friends, and associates who, by a series of misunderstandings, found themselves in a complex of involved adventures. A young doctor's romantic situations with a society woman and a 17 year old girl from the hills, 3 missing will and sapphire brooch, combined to produce an evening of enter- tainment. A. 76 This year the students of Montpelier High School enjoyed a little different entertainment before the Christmas Vacation. Directed by Paul Shumaker, with music arrangements by Paul Miller, This Strange Night gave the students another rendition of the nativ- ity story. Featured in the cast were Mary Ellen Thompson as Ester, the innkeeper's daughter; Aldis Knight as the innkeeper; Ronnie Will as Asa, a shepherd; Jerry Rhodeback as Marcus, a Roman Sol- dier;Jim Lockhart as Joseph, the father of Jesus; and Larry Steinke as a courier. This idea of a Christmas Play was a new one for Montpelier High and may continue to be a part of the new dra- matics club's functions in the future. CHRISTMAS DANCE 78 The Christmas Dance was a gay affair which set everyone in the holiday spirit. Everything from the snow flakes to the Christmas tree created a festive mood. OPEN HOUSE SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS . .. The Montpelier Senior Class presented Dirty Work at the Crossroads or Tempted, Tried, and True, March 18 and 20 with the added attraction of the coronation of the Senior Queen and Her Court. The play, a Gay Nineties Melodrama, was quite different from any play done before in the high school. The whole plot of the play centers; around Nellie Lovelace, who is tempted, tried, and remains true. The Cast Included: Munro Murgatroyd ...... As the wicked villian . . . .........................
