' I Mrs. Mildred Greek, Secretary ar K Superintendent of Schools Mr. I. Roderick Rice Joining us, for this Bicentennial year, was our new found friend, Wilma Erythropel . From her home in Essen, West Germany, Wilma arrived in Montpelier during August and embarked on the 1975-'76 school year along with her senior classmates and all the rest of the MHS community. She joined us in participating in all aspects of MHS life, learning about us and our community as we , in turn , learned much about her homeland . And , finally, she joined us in the final celebration of our high school careers, Graduation. In the exchange of ideas and customs among friends, we also learned much about others, and, most important, about ourselves. Together, we carry many fond memories of MHS in 1975-'76 , and we shall treasure those memories throughout our lives . Danke, Wilma. M. In an up and down season, the 1975- 76 Locomotives finished 4-5 overall, but not before giving Montpelier fans a season to remember. Superb wins over Evergreen and then Napoleon for the second straight year and then Wauseon gave the Locos a 3-1 record early in the season and first place in the computer poll for the fourth straight year. During the second half of the season, however, the Locos went 1-4 with only a shutout win over Patrick Henry, but the Archbold game was the most exciting of the year, despite losing to the Streaks in the final seconds, 34- 33 . Several players stood out for Montpelier as middle guard Reggie Reichle, who was named the team's defensive player of the year, also received honorable mention on the all-district team , quarterback Jim Buldas earned the offensive player of the year award and linebacker Craig Sipe won the team's MVP honor and also the Kak Brown Award . The Locomotives opened against Delta and the talented Panthers who went on to the co-championship of the NBL, blanked Montpelier 36-O as the young Locos committed seven turnovers. Against Evergreen, Jim Buldas' and Larry McLaughlin's touchdowns and a Buldas to Chuck Moore PAT pass in the first period stood up as the Vikings came back but fell short, 14-13. Montpelier made it two wins in a row for the season and two wins in a row against Napoleon with a 20-6 victory. The Naps were undefeated and unscored upon in two games but Darold Moore changed that with three touchdowns on runs of 59 , 1 , and 52 yards and the Locomotive defense held the NWOAL champion Wildcats to only 150 yards rushing . A come from behind score on Jim Buldas' 65-yard punt return and a Buldas to Scott Stahl PAT pass gave the Locos an 8-6 Homecoming win over Wauseon and a 3-1 mark on the season. Swanton, who along with Delta were NBL champs, held the Locos scoreless for three periods on the way to a 26-8 win. A fourth quarter touchdown by Jim Lee on a pass from Rick Gray spoiled the shutout bid. With their only shutout of the season, the Locos throttled Patrick Henry, 25-O. Excellent defense, a safety, a Darold Moore TD run, and two TD passes from Jim Buldas to Chuck Moore and Craig Sipe moved the Locos to their fourth win . Poor field position plagued the Locos in their 23-0 loss to Bryan. Montpelier led the Bears in all statistics except the scoreboard . Archbold scored 14 points in the final four minutes to overtake the Locos and win 34-33 . Montpelier led 25-14 at the half, and 33-20 after three quarters, but a two-point conversion with 18 seconds left gave the Streaks the win. Six lost Locomotive fumbles marked the final game of the season as the Locos fell to Liberty Center, 22-8. All of the scoring came in the final quarter as Liberty won its only contest of the season. Showing determination, skill, and spirit, the Locomotives recorded their first ever undefeated volleyball season with 12 straight victories, starting with Delta and moving through perennial powerhouses Napoleon, Archbold and Stryker. Eight of the Locos' 12 wins were by straight games, as their power volleyball strategy proved highly effective. The six seniors and their coach Pat Peter led the Locos in the season's greatest win over long-time rival Archbold. It took the Locos three games to defeat the Streaks, 15-6, 2- 15, and 15-11 and the victory sealed the NWOAL and NBL championships. Both Stryker and Napoleon fell in two games, 15-6 and 15-11, and 15-6 and 15-6 respectively. Statistically, Beth Oberlin led the team in actual scoring with 80 points. Deb Fisher was the leader in kills with 36 . A--:ui ln this, the first year of the volleyball state tournaments, the Montpelier Locomotives had high hopes as they went into tourney action. Coming off an undefeated season of 12 wins, the Locos opened the tournament at Hilltop in the sectionals, quickly disposing of Hilltop, 15-7 and 15-5. To win the berth in the districts, the Locos dropped Fayette, 15-1 and 15-4. On the district level, the Locos met Tinora, a team that proved to be the most difficult opponent up to that point. Montpelier, however, came back to win the match 15-12, 12-15, and 15-4, and earn the right to meet North Central for the championship. The Locos breezed through the title game, 15-6 and 15-3, to add another trophy to their collection and to advance to Bowling Green for the regionals. The Locomotives expected tough competition in the regionals but started by brushing away Kalida, 15-8 and 15-9, and then literally demolishing Minster in the title game, 15-3 and 15-6, to give the Wildcats their first loss of the year. With the coveted regional trophy, the Locos headed to state for the first annual volleyball championships in Ohio. In Westerville, the Locomotive tournament express met Newark Catholic in the semi-finals and in two extremely close games, fell to the undefeated Green Wave, 12-15 and 14-16. Although the 5-14 record does not show it, the 1975-'76 Montpelier' Locomotive varsity basketball team played extremely well against top calibre competition throughout the season. It was a rebuilding year and head coach Ken Jones welcomed back only two lettermen, Scott Weis and Jeff Shepard . The season started slowly, with the first victory coming in the fifth game , against North Central. That seemed to be a turning point as the Locos followed that win with a pair of close losses to powerhouses Edgerton, by two points, and Wauseon, by one point. Victory number two came in the ninth game with a 20-point margin over Edon. The Locos followed that win with a hard-fought, two- point loss to once-beaten Delta . Victory number three, however, was the biggest of the season as the Locos squeezed by Patrick Henry on the Patriots' floor, 69-64, a stunning upset. In the closing week of the season, the Locos downed Hilltop by 16 points, almost upset the once-beaten Stryker Panthers before falling, 69-64, and finished the regular season with a three-point win over Liberty Center. In their first and only tourney game , the Locos faced Stryker for the second time in the season, but this time the Panthers dominated , 80-54 . The Locomotives concluded the season with the 5-14 overall record, 3- 5 in the BBC, 2-5 in the NBL, and 1-4 in the NWOAL. The locomotives were led in scoring and rebounding statistics by a pair of sophomores, Jack Fee and Lane Shoup. Fee, named the MVP on the team, led the team with 200 points and a 10. 5 ppg average. Shoup, at 6-7, led with 176 rebounds. Z7 ' a , It was a superb year once again for girls' track at MHS as the Locos went 10-1 in season competition, won their fourth straight NWOAL and NBL titles, won the Defiance College Relays for the fourth straight time, were second at the Toledo Blade Relays, won the Sectional Meet, placed second at the District Meet, and finished third at the State Meet with two individual state champions: Cathy Robison and Deb Fisher. Robison won the hurdles in Columbus in a record time of 10.8 seconds, shattering her own mark from last year by more than two seconds, and added a fourth place in the high jump with a jump of 5-3, three inches short of her personal best set in the district meet. Fisher's championship in the discus also set a new state record with a toss of 116' 4 . The Locos had also qualified three relay teams for the state meet but tragedy befell the teams on exchanges as none were able to finish in the top six places. Members of the teams were the medley relay: Kelly Banks, Laura Figgins, Robison, and Peg Budaq the 440 relay: Beth Oberlin, Deb Fisher, Laura Figgins, Robison: and the mile relay: Oberlin, Deb Knecht, Fisher, and Lori Cook. The Locos were coached by Pat Peter, who, in turn, was assisted by Diane Genter. .,,., t Tim- ' S 1 had , .1 Deb Fisher unleashed this throw for a record-breaking 116' 4 to win the state discus championship in Columbus. ,,, ' I V ' if K X F frsl' -a t ,,,, t or e Q 't in., is hh ,st t ,,,, it is e :':s ,,,i 1 Q' ,1,f1 as ..,i V t --,, ,,, ,,::, f .t::,,,::, , ,gf S' 'ri 1 tsas - 'li'aft ' ,tt Ma t A t Q, 'qw' WkA,k ' t Lq kmmvumo- K gift Cathy Robison defended her state hurdles championship with a record-breaking 10.8 second flight. The 1976 MHS baseball team posted a disappointing 7-14 record on the season with wins over Tinora , North Central, Liberty Center, Delta in 10 innings, Fayette, Edon, and Hicksville . With only five returning lettermen, coach Ted Zigler's greatest problem during the season was inexperience at key positions but many underclassmen got the opportunity to play thus gasning valuable elperience for future seasons . The sealon opened at the end of March with a trip south to the Cincinnati area to play Bethel-Tate . Four games were scheduled over the two days but three of them were rained out. Even so, the trip was a definite highlight of the season and it allowed the Locos to get in some early season outside practice. Senior Scott Weis and sophomore Bud Dewitt were named to the All-District team while the pair and Craig Sipe were named to the all-BBC team. Weis and Sipe also were named to the all- NBL squad . Sipe. Jeff Shepard, and Dewitt gained membership into the . 300 club with respective batting averages of .350, .323, and .322, and Randy Houk and Larry McLaughlin eamed Golden Glove awards for outstanding defensive play. Jim Lee set a record for stolen bases during the season with 27 steals. X. lack Fee . 5 J 3 . i 1 ..., W l'iA' we QTJX 1 Scott Weis SJ.
