In mid- December 1973, Rita Christina Borges Menezes and Bruno Caruso arrived to share their experiences and culture with us. Their presence in our midst certainly made an indelible impact on each and every one of us. Both Rita and Bruno arrived during one of the year's biggest snowstorms, a big change from the summer they had left in Brazil. Yet, despite the abrupt change and their great distance from home, both of them immediately became an integral part of the MHS community. While in Montpelier, Rita, fromfRio de Janeiro, stayed with the James Sipe family, and Bruno, from Sao Paulo, became a part of the Tom Fisher fam- ily. As Rita and Bruno expanded their knowledge of English and their aware- ness and participation in our customs, we also expanded our knowledge of their country, their people, their lan- guage, and their customs. We shared many things, ideas, and experiences through those short months we were together, and we shall never forget those times. When spring arrived and the time came for Rita and Bruno to return home, it was with real sadness that we saw them go. But with their return to Brazil came also a hope that one day, we might meet again and renew our friendship. To Rita and Bruno, muito obrigado! Ate algum dia! This year, for the first time, Home- coming was celebrated with a parade led by the Locomotive marching band. Each class created a float for their Queen's court representative. This year they had a very impressive win over the Wauseon Indians by a score of 41 - 12 . The powerful Loco's came into the game with an outstanding 2 - 1 overall record. Greg Kimmel intercepted a Wauseon pass, and shortly after- wards the Loco offense had drawn first blood in the key N. B .L. battle. Wauseon came right back to score, but Montpelier did not get down, and scored two more times to take a 21 - 6 halftime lead . The second half was completely dominated by the Locomotives. Halfback Tom Harrington ran for a touchdown on a 60 yard punt return. Then the Montpelier defense took over and held Wauseon to nega- tive yardage . During the final quarter both coaches emptied their benches , and Montpelier ended up victorious for themselves, and Queen Cindy. 1 1. Coaches Krouse and Klotz. 2. Lee Richmond. 3. MHS FOUTBALL ' Opening the 1973 football season, Montpelier hosted the Napoleon Wildcats in what had been cooked up as the game to decide the N .W.O.A.L. Title. Deciding the title it didg but the Locos came out on the short end . Napoleon was held down to X a very stunning 14 pts. , but the Locomotives could only accumulate 13 as a last minute 2 pt. conversion failed. The Locos shocked many people, and proved that 5 they were definitely going to be Northwestern Ohio's Powerhouse. The Locomotives put it all together against Evergreen with a 21 - 6 victory. The Locos team effort proved to be the deciding margin. Montpelier used a very powerful running attack to chalk up 5 touchdowns in roll- H E ing over P. H . 39 - 8 . The victory over the Patriots put the Locos into 1st place in 7 the N.B.L. and in the District Ratings. 1 2 5 E 5: E is si' l t ! w l 2 5 1 5 1 2 1. Locomotive Defense. 2. 3 4 Dennis Gearig. 3. This game put the Locomotives further into 1st place in the N.B.L. The Locos stretched their winning streak to 4 by defeating Swanton 89 - 0. The Montpelier defense recorded their first shutout of the year, and remained the top defensive unit in both leagues. The Green Machine from Delta pro- vided the Locomotives with one of their toughest games of the season. Both teams played to a 0 - 0 lst quar- ter. Montpelier finally started playing their own game, and proceeded to win 415 with the score of 27 - O! Although the score did not dprove it, Montpelier played one of eir best games against their arch-rivals from Bryan. T e Locomotive defense held the Golden Bears running attack to negative yards. The Montpelier offense did not move as well as previ- ous games but still managed to put points on the board. When the final gun had sounded in the brutal battle, the Locomotives had a 16 - 0 shutout. Montpelier's '7th straight victory came over Achbold on parent's night by a score of 27 - 8. This victory gave the Locomotives the N.B.L. title with a perfect 6 - 0 record. ln the season finale the Locomotives soundly defeated Liberty Center b a score of 35 - 20. STA TE SEMI-FI ALS Producing the best football team in MHS history was a key factor in getting the Locomotives to the Class A Semi- Finals. School spirit was at its peak for the team's send-off Friday morning, which was to be the beginning of a successful night . From the very kick- off of the crucial game, the Locomo- tives were not to be denied a victory. A stout Montpelier defense held the powerful Newark Catholic Green Wave to a total of 9 yards rushing. The very potent offense got things started early in the second period. 1 28 2 3 1. Fans at Mansfield. 2. Touchdown. 8. Jack, Coach 4 5 Denny. 4. Victory! 5. Kim Hopkins and Lynn Oberlin. Krouse and Montpelier fullback, Lynn Oberlin, broke through the Newark line carrying three defenders across the goal line. Dick Dewitt added a PAT and a late period fieldgoal to give the Locos a 10 - 0 halftime lead. Opening the second half the Locomotive defense capitalized early, catching the Newark Catholic punting in the end zone for a safety, making the score 12 - 0. The final scoring for Montpelier came on a 14 yard reverse bootleg by QB Lee Richmond, with Dewitt kicking another PAT making the score 19 - 0. The only Newark Catholic score came on a 1 yard plunge after a 60 yard drive against the Loco second team defense, also scoring a 2 point PAT, making the final score 19 - 8 and putting the Locomotives in the Class A State Championship game. - gi. STA TE FI ALS The longest and most memorable football crusade in Montpelier Locomotive his- tory came to a dramatic and emotional halt at Delaware , Ohio, Friday, November 23. The Locomotives finished their 9 - 2 season in the Ohio, Class A Football Championships, losing to Middletown Fenwick Falcons in the title game. The Locos were plagued by turnovers and poor field position while Middletown used superior size to punch across four touchdowns. Pelier spoiled Middletown's shutout bid in the Class A Final, on a 57 yard touchdown ramble by fullback Lynn Oberlin, and an extra point kick by Dick Dewitt. The Loco's 27 - '7 loss made them number 2 in the state but their presence repre- senting Northwestern Ohio in the state playoffs gave area football the recognition it deserves. TRA VELING VOLLE YB LL The Reserve Team had a winning season, compiling a record of 5-4. Teamwork proved to be the key factor to help the girls on to victory. The girls GAA Interscholastic Varsity Volleyball Team, having improved greatly from last year, had a very successful season. They started out with a win over Edon, but fell, losing the next three games to Napoleon, Stryker, and Archbold. They came back to win their last five games over Liberty Center, North Central, Edger- ton, Farview, and Bryan. In the last game with Bryan, 'Pelier had little trouble, taking the first two games by scores of 15-O, and 16-14. This closed out their sea- son with an overall record of 6 wins and 3 losses. The team did well in the tournament play at Napoleon. In the first round they met Wauseon , winning two of the three games to move up to the second round of play. Once again the Locoettes defeated Bryan two of the three games to advance to the finals. They met a tough Archbold team which proved to be too much, and ended the season as runners-up in the NWOAL Volleyball Tournament. 1 1. Reserve team. 2. Leisa 4 Hallock and Kathy Price. 2 3 3. The NWOAL Championship was the first won by the y girls in the recent history of GAA bas- in t, etball. 1 N' A 1 1. Anne and Grace Adams. D A 3 2. Iubilation. 3. The GAA Interscholastic Basketball team did an outstanding job this year, being the only undefeated team in the area. Teamwork proved to be the key factor that sparked the team to its unde- feated season. Compiling a regular sea- son record of 9 - 0, the Locoettes were able to defeat their opponents by consid- erable margins. The Locoettes toughest games came against Archbold, Bryan, and Napoleon, but with quick thinking and excellent playing, they were able to come from behind and come out on top tc maintain their winnin season. The Reserve team aio had a very suc-A cessful season, compiling a record of 7 - 2 . The team had little returning experi- ence and had to work hard to develop their skills and abilities. Their only two losses came ag-lainst North Central and Archbold, bot by slight margins. Team- work again proved to e the main factor that helped the team to a very successful season. 1 u f 5 2 3 F M.H.S. WRESTLING -...W 1. Bob bdoore. 2. Terry hdercer. 3. Jack Rice. 4. Ieuy Mercer.5. By placing fifth in the team standings and sending four men to districts, .the Loco's did well at the sectionals. Facing Gibson- burg in the regional opener, the Locos were defeated 3-1 in a game not decided until the final out. Their placing in the regionals marked the farthest advancement of a Locomotive baseball team in the long history of the MHS sport. After two years as bridesmaid of the districts, the Locos outlasted Ottawa Hills 6-5 for the elusive title . Earlier tourney victims were Hilltop, 1-0, Pettisville, 9-5. and Hicksville, 1-0. The Locos, coached by Frank Lantz, posted an overall record of 12-7 and brought home the two large sectional and district trophies. Shortstop Stan Murrell, infielder- catcher Dick Dewitt, and pitcher Lee Richmond ended their high school dia- mond careers, adding much to the leadership and ability of the team. Their departure from the team due to graduation will leave large holes in the lineup but a strong underclass team should keep Montpelier in baseball prominence for a considerable time . .A 1 A M 552, , . The squad was the first in MHS history to participate in the state Class A golf tourna- ment , having survived the grueling eliminations through the sectional and district tourneys. The squad of Scott Ely, Bill Brannan, lack Rice, Don Dietsch, and Fritz Wilson finished in fourth place in the state tourney, only five strokes behind the third place team. Ely himself, after earning medalist honors in the district in Find- lay with a par '72, placed eighth in the individual standings with a 16'7 score over 36 holes, all played on the difficult OSU Scarlet course. The Locos were runner-up by five strokes in the district competition and won their sectional title by eleven strokes as Bill Brannan's '78 earned sectional medalist honors and Don Dietsch's 81 gained the runner-up position. In league competition, the Locos won the Northern Border League title for the fourth year, recording a 21-stroke margin over the runner-up team. In the NWOAL, the Locos tied with Napoleon for second place as Ely took the medalist role again in both NBL and NWOAL rankings with '76 strokes. Brannan was third with a '79 . Due to a conflict in league tourneys, the Montpelier JVs competed in the BBC tournament, finishing in the pack and ending the Loco domination of the circuit. During the season, the Locos under the coaching of Rick Herge , ran up a remarkable record of 58 wins, eight losses, and one tie . The 1974 squad was the last to participate in spring golf as the sport was switched to fall, but the experience gained by underclass golfers should carry Montpelier's fortunes on the links far. The girls' 1974 track team had a very successful and impressive season. Almost every school record was broken, including all three relays events. For the third straight year the Locoettes were undefeated in dual and triangular meets. They were also overwhelmingly successful in defending their Montpelier Invitational, NWOAL, and Defiance College Alumni Relays championships. In the Blade Relays, which consisted of A ,. AA, and AAA competition, the girls won a superb third place tie with Fremont Ross, a AAA school, and the Locos were the highest placing class A school in the Relays. Mary Siebenaler captured Montpe- 1ier's only first place in the Blades with an astounding and record-breaking toss of 219 feet in the softball throw. Joni Thomas, Anne and Grace Adams, and Sherry Hurd , the four graduating seniors, will leave difficult places to fill next season, but a strong group of underclass athletes should well continue the tradition of excel- lence in MHS girl's track. , .l ' 1 4 su.-3 ' A . . t as ' I I W ' ,J my-P Q 'I A 'EA - s f lvl- as.,.. by ' gp , - I xg Y X ,fit :: 7 ' - .. The big shooters are in town, but Nathan Detroit is having a tough time finding a spot for his floating crap game . The cops have the lid on tight. There is one spot, but Detroit needs a grand front money. His only chance is Sky Masterson. Detroit sets up a pat bet, although Sky doesn't fall for it. But Sky has a soft spot for Detroit and his fiancee of fourteen years, Miss Adelaide, the star of the Hot Box Revue. He offers Detroit another chance. Sky bets he can get any girl that Detroit can name to fly with him to Havana . Detroit jumps at the bet and points out Sarah Brown, a solid Salvation Army reformer. Sky gets Sarah to agree to a deal. If she will join him for dinner, he will deliver twelve sinners to her prayer meeting. She's a good sport when she learns the restaurant is in Havana, and is eventually persuaded to go in order to save the mission. During the trip they fall in love. Nathan takes advantage of the situation by holding a crap game in the mission. Sarah feels she's been used and won't speak to Sky. When Sky can't persuade the gamblers to attend the meeting, he rolls them a thousand dollars against their souls. The result is a full turnout. Nathan has missed his date to elope and Adelaide is mad. The jilted Adelaide and despondent Sarah meet and decide to apply feminine pressure. Nathan and Sky have reassembled and prepare to be willingly dragged into marriage. Wil? Q 5 1 1. The Crapshooters. 2. Adelaide and Sarah. 3. 2 3 The Mission Band. Compliments of C. J. ENGELS CO.
