As principal, you have known and guided many generations of students through MHS . Upon graduation each has taken along a part of the complete high school experience you have worked so long to establish We are deeply appreciative of your constant help and guidance to each of us. As financial advisor to the annual staff, we are especially grateful for your help in organizing our advertising and subscription campaigns over the past three years. Your considerable experience in the administrative aspects of yearbook production has aided us greatly in the production of this and of future Mirrors . It came as a complete surprise to hear of your decision to return to classroom teaching. We extend to you our best wishes for success and happiness in this , your new career. Q !f l ..,i V MRS. MARY HAINES MRS. MEREDITH WILKEN To Mrs. Mary Haines and to Mrs. Meredith Wilken, we also dedicate this yearbook and extend to you both our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for what you have given us during our brief tenure at Montpelier High School. Your combined careers of almost seventy years have had a tremendous effect on helping to build and constantly improve the educational system here in Montpelier and you will be greatly missed in the years to come. Your careers in teaching have encompassed many fields. Mrs. Wilken, you have taught in the humani- ties and the commercial subjects and fortunately, in art where your efforts have made the MHS art department one of the foremost if not the best in northwestern Ohio. Mrs. Haines, your career has spanned coaching and physical education and dramatics and English and Latin and the zest and gusto with which you took on the everyday occurrences at MHS will be impossible to replace. Each of us who had the real privilege of passing through your classes has come away with something very special and we are deeply appreciative. To both of you, we wish you many full years of happy, profit- able , and enjoyable retirement. Marcelo -Q - This year, Montpelier High School was the recipient of a rare and unique experience in the person of Mar- 2 celo Valadares de Andrade, our visiting student from pgy' is Brazil. His presence at MHS touched each and every one of us and gave us the opportunity to share cultures and ideas and to expand our own limited knowledge of other peoples and places. Marcelo arrived at MHS near the end of a wintry first semester and immediately became involved in the aca- demic and social activities of his newly-found environ- ment. At first, language was a major obstacle but with the aid of his little green dictionary and an insatiable curiosity, he soon developed a fluency that amazed us all. The weather change from his own warm climate at home in Belo Horizonte , Brazil to the winter snows of Montpelier, Ohio was another big obstacle and none of us will forget sharing in his discovery of our taken-for- granted winter cold and snow. While at MHS, Marcelo stayed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Gardner and commuted daily with Mrs. Gardner. In June, however, he returned to his family in Brazil in order to continue his secondary edu- cation. The time he spent with us was really quite short, yet he gave us so much that we shall remember his stay for a long time. We all wish him the very best of all possi- ble successes in his future and hope that perhaps some- day in the not so far future our paths will once again cross. Marcelo, thanks. Compiling a 4-9 record, the Frosh could manage only 2 wins out of their first ll games, even though they came close to a victory in the Wauseon contest. They ended the regular season with back to back victo- ries over Edon and Evergreen to carry them into the tournament with high spirits. However the Locos were defeated and eliminated in the First round of tournamc play to close out the 1973 season. Under their first year coach, Jim Hutchinson, the Loco linksmen captured firsts in two league tour- naments and a close third in another. Montpelier won both the Buckeye Border Conference title and the Northern Border League championship and fin- ished third behind perennial NWOAL powers Bryan and Napoleon. In the tourneys leading to the state competi- tion, the Locos placed third in the sectional and third in the district with the latter going to the wire before the team was edged out of a berth in Columbus by only one stroke . However, junior Scott Ely took medalist honors and advanced to the state championships. There were but three seniors on the 1973 squad and the combined experience returning next year should produce another successful year. To open the 1972- '73 football season, Montpelier traveled to Napoleon to meet the Wildcats. Even though Locomotive miscues gave the Wildcats a 36-18 victory, the Locos provided Napoleon with all the com- petition they could handle. With a 44-0 victory against Evergreen, the Loco de- fense responded soundly as they held the Vikings to a minus five yards rushing. Montpelier's quick, aggres- sive line smothered tried to generate. any offensive plans that the Vikings During the Patrick Henry contest, Mont- pelier could not sustain any type of an of- fensive drive and was forced to give the ball up on numerous occasions. A shut-out was denied in the final minute as Montpelier crossed the Patriot goal line to end the game 36-8. Although the final score, 22-6, does not indicate it, the Locos played an aggressive game with much desire and hard-hitting against Wauseon. The passing game kept the overall offensive yardage totals for the two teams close as the Locos almost doubled their hosts in aerial gains. After the back to back losses, the Locos reopened their home stand posting a 33-22 win over the Swanton Bulldogs. Holding the Bulldogs to under 100 yards rushing, the Lo- cos turned in 233 yards of their own. The clash between the Locos and the Delta Panthers was defensively oriented as Montpelier blanked Delta, 17-0. With much pursuit and gang-tackling, the Locos accomplished their one main objective which was to make the shut-out. The Homecoming victory over arch-rival Bryan resulted from fine plays tumed in by the Locomotives. With a rally of two touch- downs and a strong defense in the last quar- ter, an entire team effort prevailed to gar- ner the win, 24-14, Despite the final score against Archbold, 22-0, the contest remained a close defen- sive battle throughout with most of the ac- tion taking place within the two 30 yard line stripes. Even though Archbold led in rushing with 328 yards, the Loco defense allowed the undefeated Streaks only one extended TD drive as the other two scores came on long solo runs, For the season finale, Montpelier put it all together in blitzing Liberty Center to give the Locos a 5-4 winning season. Even though the muddy field prohibited firm footholds, the Locos took complete charge of the contest to smother the Tigers, 35-0. ' 4' , f f Sg j f ,. i, . However, the six seniors and two soph- omore boys generated much enthusiasm, despite the lack of support from the students. This play recreates their lives and try- ing times during their stay from June 1942 to May 1945, after which they were captured by the Gestapo. Each member of the household was uniquely different, which led to amusing but more often tense conflicts. There was the sharp contrast between the reserved Franks and the bicker- ing Van Daans. Mr. Dussel, the hypochondriac dentist, contributed to the strained atmosphere with his continual complaints. Margot Frank and Peter Van Daan were shy teenagers cut off from the rest of the world but whatever they lacked in enthusiasm, Anne more than made up for it with her wild antics and constant philosophical beliefs. This play was a great success in dramatic accomplishment and was one of the best productions of the year. It was made possible by the superior work of the cast, stage crew, and directors. 3'? Horace, as yet uninformed of his im- pending nuptials, is led by Dolly on a wild and wily trap to New York City, where, of course, Dolly gets her man. Meanwhile, in their master's absence, Comelius and Barnaby, Vandergeld's clerks fslaves?j gather enough courage to take their first night off in ten years. Once in New York and while dodging Mr. Vandergelder, they find love at first sight in a hat shop with the first two women they meet: a certain Miss Irene Molloy and her assistant Minnie Fay. The evening of this interesting day is spent in the expensive Harmonia Gardens Restaurant where both parties, that of Dolly and Horace, and the foursome with stars in their eyes, iinally collide in the polka contest. Even after a court trial, things turn out well with happiness even finding its way into sniveling Ermengarde's heart when she gets to marry an artist against her father Vander- gelder's wishes. The choreographed waltzes and waiter's gallop were carried out to perfection by the singers, dancers, and waiters.
