HECTOR RICARDO ELLIOT Eighteen-year-old Ricardo Elliot from Buenos Aires, Argentina, was Montpelier's first exchange student, living with the family of Warren Fisher during his stay. At school he was a member of FFA and of M Club with future plans of becoming a veterinarian. When he went out for football, Ricardo became one of the best kickers of Montpelier High School He went on the senior class trip to Washington D.C., New York, and the World's Fair. The American Field Service then took him on a tour across the United States. In the short time he was here, Ricardo really became a part of the Class of 1964. 23 4 W A , V w r C: Vfiflflfif UF!! lg? PICK A DILLT Young Rod Benedict was to inherit a fortune from his late uncle, provided he married one of the three Dilly sisters, April Violet, May Lily, or june Rose . If he didn't propose, he was to be disinherited, but if the girls refused to marry him, he would get most of the money. Because he didn't wish to marry until he was thirty, Rod disguised himself as a wild-and-woolly cowpoke to discourage the girls from accepting a proposal. However, the girls promised Opal, their martyr-mama, that one of them would wed Rod and sacrifice herself for the good of the family. Other hopeful relatives who came for the reading of the will were Amanda Strong, who brought along her maid, Purina Hogg, and Arvilla, Otis, and Wilbur Garvey. The haunt of Old Betsy, the horrendous hag , and Azariah Coffin, the mad mortician , enlivened proceedings whenever they appeared . Then jack Purcell, june's boyfriend, discovered a valuable mineral on the land around the old home . When Old Betsy and Azariah Coffin were cap- tured by Rod and Tex Larabee, his Texas pal, the two haunts confessed to trying to frighten the heirs away so that Lawyer Thaddeus Bleeker could have the land. They had forced the housekeeper, Susan Clark, at the threat of her life, to go along with the scheme. As the story ended, june Rose was engaged to jack, May Lily to Tex, and April Violet to Rod . 28 V t Enter Rod and Tex. Right: Presenting Mrs. Haines and Mr. Vrooman with gifts. Each year Montpelier High School sends a delegation of students to the Model United Nations Assembly at Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Michigan. These students represent a country which has been assigned to MHS, and participate in the committees and the General Assembly of the Model United Nations in the way in which they believe their country does . This year Montpelier was assigned two countries: Argentina, represented by Ricardo Elliot, john Herb, Deanna Clark, Bob Bemis, and Lois Anders, and Ireland, represented by Doug Bible, Melinda DeGroff, Marcia Cline, and joe Huston. Mr. Vrooman was advisor to both groups . Through this experience the students meet many exchange students from different countries and learn to better understand the country they represent and the United Nations and its workings . As they came to the banquet at 6:30 P.M., the seniors and their hosts entered the Rose Garden through a rose and vine covered arbor. The speaker's table fea- tured a gold key in the center piece. Each small table was ac- cented with a lighted candle and pink oval programs which dis- played a sm all gold key and flower motif. A hand drawn stone wall Qwith pink and red roses on green vines trailing along ity encircled the room. At one end was a large simu- lated tree and a smaller one was in the corner of the other end. Also around the garden were various sized topiary bushes showing many pink and red roses among their green splendor contrasting the blue sky overhead. In the center the make believe fountain on a bed of grass took the appearance of reality as colored lights played upon it. After the banquet the group went to the auditorium for the teach- ers' entertainment. Then at the prom, music was furnished by the Reputations. After the prom, bowling, folk singing by the New Concord Singers, and a breakfast were furnished by the Chamber of Commerce and Montpelier Recreation. A delightful time was had by all. 70 QY? JI! The beginning of the '63 season saw many new faces on the gridiron, some of whom were destined to see much action during the regular season. The not -to-bad 4-5 record was not a true reflection of the team's ability. The Locos were always a worthy opponent and the games lost were closer than the score indicates. Only memories are left for the Seniors, but for the juniors and all the other under- classmen there is the chance for a more successful season next year. Even though the Locos fell short of their goal to raise Mont pelier's basketball standard, they still provided many thrills and tense moments for the fans . The season's record did not show the team's real potential, but was indicative of what they really could have done . There were actually no really bad games played, but there always seemed to be a bad quarter. lt was the same old story, faithful fourth quarter, when once again we walked off the floor with defeat written on our faces . The squad will be losing six seniors, but there will be two juniors and three sophomores to fill their places . Best of Luck to next year's team. We, the team, wish to express our appreciation to Coach Cooper and wish him best of success in the years to come. Fayette . . . . . Bryan . . Liberty Center . . Napoleon . This year, although our victory record wasn't impressive, we gained much valuable experience by competing against AA schools . This experi- ence paid off, because we sent eleven men to the District meet at Bowling Green and four men to the State meet at Columbus. Atthe State meet, Dan Bohner placed fifth in the shot put . We sent nine men to the Mans- field Relays, the biggest track meet in the nation, and fifteen men to Springfield, where we placed fifth. This year We are losing four seniors: john Herb, pole vault and 880 relayg Larry Boyd, shot put, discus, and 880 relayg Jim Waterston, hurdlerg and Ron Hepker, 880 relay and mile relay.
