They were placed in two leagues which inspired the coach, Mr. Brazen, and the boys to surpass themselves by bringing home two trophies. The fellows have been playing together for quite some time, and through ability and organized effort, our team managed to get the two trophies by winning all the games in both leagues. In the tournament, 'Pelier won their first game but were eliminated when they were defeated by Bryan in the second game. The students of Montpelier High were certainly proud of their outstanding baseball team. As far as we are concerned, the '56 season was chalked up as a success, or as Coach Brazen described the season to me, It was great. 5 mx Q Mr. Barcus, Mr. Taylor, Mayor Allen, The I-lon. Govemor Lausche. Government Day Every year for the past five years, Government Day has been held at Montpelier High School, Over 300 students from Williams County participate in this program. Prior to workshop, meetings were held with a planning committee of teachers and two students selected by the school. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the problems which the youth wanted to discuss, After the committees were chosen, a training period was set up by Lawrence J. Taylor of Hillsdale College to brief the students who would help run the workshop, On the day of the big occassion, students and teachers assembled in the Montpelier auditorium to ask questions, During the meeting the secretary recorded the six proposed questions and the group decided upon the one which their spokesman would ask the appropriate panel official. The state, county, and municipal officials participating in the project were seated in the front of the auditorium. Each panel of officials was designated by printed signs. Featured at the'meeting was Frank Lausche, John Brown, Floyd Barcus, Dr, Lawrence Taylor at Drake. li Panel Discussion Group Mayor Allen welcoming Govemor Lauche to Mont pelier's Government Day L.. Emphasizing the theme Evening in Paris , two walls were marked with paintings, drawings, and red and white striped awnings. Carts of flowers flanked the bandstand at one end of the room. At the other end was a white mural of a Paris street painted on a black background by Linda Kilpat- rick. The Juniors and Seniors assembled in the auditorium for the processional to the banquet at 7 o'clock. This procession was led by the faculty. The small tables, each seating four guests, and the speaker 's table were laid with red and white cloths and napkins, and centered with lighted candles in bottles marked with dripping wax. waitresses in colorful costumes were the sophomore girls who showed the group to the tables under the direction of the head waiters. Miss Judy Oppenheim, president of the junior class, welcomed the guests. The response was given by James Martin, the senior class president. Magical Nonsense a combination of magic and comedy presented by a Ft. Wayne, entertainer served as an interlude between the banquet and the dance. Evening in Paris products were won in a special drawing by Cynthia Pfeiffer during the dance. Norm Klondik and his orchestra from Bowling Green provided the music. Mr. and Mrs. George Foley were hosts at a special midnight show for the juniors and seniors following the dance. The entire junior class took part in planning the banquet, each serving on a special committeeg and the dinner was prepared by the mothers of the juniors. ' as 10 win. 4 0 SPRINEANCE. Spring Festival The Spring Festival is an event that is held every year. The first evening the Grade School and High School Bands give their program. She and her friends, Push Pringle and Bird Brain, are enthusiastic members of the S.P.P. -- Society for the Prevention of Parents. Everything gets off to a big start when Charley Craig, a handsome new boarder in the Weber home, admires Billie's sketches for greeting cards and suggests that they take samples to the county seat to obtain a license to sell them. The plot becomes even more hilarious when Punk, the jealous boy friend, sees Billie and Charley driving away from the Weber home with an overnight case. A wedding cake is accidently delivered to the Weber home, so naturally everyone in the town believes that they have eloped. All is settled when Charley and Billie return and explain just what they have been doing. 15 X v 344 I-IOMECOMINC QUEEN Miss Laura Zimmerman 16 vi p '11 13- 66969 Pafso avi P' - s 1 ' 8ajor4 vane Wen HOMECOMING ATTENDANTS Diane Falco - Sophomore Attendant Susan Creek - Freshman Attendant 17 N.. ny!! Senior Accomplishments After four years of high school, our Senior Class is certainly worthy of their diplomas. Many of us have learned about music, art, govern- ment, sportsmanship, and companionship. The seniors have taken ad- vantage of the opportunities which our school offers, and thus we now feel we are capable of deciding a future ambition. By taking A Capella, Glee Club, and Band, students not only learn more about singing, or playing the instrument they desire, but they also have fun. When you study about the government of our country, you gain valuable information. However, our Senior Class has had an opportunity to help with poll voting, conducted elections and some ha ve attended a mock United Nations Assembly. This active participation is essential to really study government. Of course, not all our time was spent at school studying. We are like the typical students who like to have fun at football and basketball games, by having dates, or just meeting the gang in the Cottage Inn. Activities such as these play an active part in the High School Senior's life. After four years of preparation, most of us feel we can decide our future occupation. Some of the seniors will go to college. Many will seek better jobs in a large city, A few will get married and build fine homes and farms. Whatever we decide to do, we will certainly do it to the best of our ability. 33 NAME Dolores Allomong Donna Allomong Pat Amaden Jim Anders Bill Bany Ron Bauer Don Beck Donna Beck Kay Beck Bob Benjamin Betty Bible Gay Blosser Jim Bordner Joe Bostater Barb Brandon Joe Brown Barb Bvill Betty Champion Lavern Cogwell Junior Cogswell Jerrv Falco Denny Faunce Larry Fenicle Barb Femtermaker WHO YOU ARE USUALLY WITH Donna, Betty, Carolyn Carolyn, Betty Gay, Barb, Phyl, Sandy Claire Gilbert Gerry Laberdee Deanna Larry Steinke, Mocherrnan, Falco Bill or Kay Judy Mills Jo Richolt Arnold Keith, Pat, Sandy, Barbq Glendale - Kenny Larry Fenicle Sandy, Pat, Gay, Phyl Ken Brown Sir Darwin Eugene Steinke Carolyn, Donna, Denny Junior Lavern Steinke, Figgins, Mochennan Pat Joe Bostater Ralph Brown FAVORITE FWD Pizza Chicken Onion Rings Steak Ham 6: Potatoes Apple Pie Spaghetti 6: Meat Balls Chicken 8: Potatoes French Fries Cranberry Salad Ham Q Coke Steak lce Cream Beef Steak French Fries Steak Great Big Gobs of Greasy Gopher Gu Chile Pie Anything Steak French Fnes Steak Steak WHERE YOU ARE FAVORITE HOBBY USUALLY FOUND B2bySittil1g Dancing and listening to Records Coffe Shop Basketball Coffe Shop Dancing H On the F arm Farming At home Women and parking Bryan Parking Cottage Inn Golf l With Bill at home or at Collage Inn Football, basketball and talking All Around Chewing Bubble Gum Home Fishing Home Skating Coffe Shop Skating, Dancing At Home Track. Although Montpelier had only five veterans from last year's ball club, they had a good supply of young talent, a new coach, and the hopes of a great season. These hopes were shattered by a 2 and '7 record, but the experience that the younger boys acquired during the season will be of great value to them in the future. Good luck to the coach and his boys for a better season in 1957. DEFIANCE - It was a long, tough evening for the Loco's in their opening game as they took a sound drubbing from a strong Defiance eleven for their first loss of the season, 34 - 0. NAPOLEON - Bad luck continued to haunt the Locomotives as a revengeful Napoleon team came through with a 41 - '7 victory. LIBEITY CENTER - Again the Loco's came out on the bottom end of the score. All through the game, we led, the score at the half being 13 - 0. It was a strong Liberty Center team that finished the game. The final score 32 - 13. SWANTON - Montpelier met Swanton for their second home game and again showed great improvement over their previous game, but a few bad breaks cost the Loco's a victory. Final score 27 - 25. DELTA - If at first you don't succeedg try, try again was the Loco's motto as they sought their first victory of the season. The Loco's proved they could do it by beating the Panther's 46 - 26 in a well-played ball game. WAUSEON - This was truly the Locomotives hard luck night as everything they did seemed to help the Indians, Final score 20 - 7. ARCHBOLD - This game was the highlight of the Loco's season. It was an inspired Montpelier team that proceeded to hand the blue streaks a sound defeat. PAULDING - This was the last game of the season, and the Loco- motives traveled to Paulding where they met a strong Paulding de- fenses This defense proved to be too much for the Blue and White, and they were defeated. 67 I . , 5 .S i, .Q ,il sf . . By Roger Mocherman The basketball team traveled to Archbold for their first game and emerged with a victory. This victory showed that the team had desire. The score was 52 - 41. The following week Delta came to the Locos' court and were thoroughly trounced by a score of 63 - 47. In the first N.W.O.L. game the locos took over where the team left off last year and won a close game from Napoleon 55 - 50. Montpelier went to Swanton and had more trouble with the officials than the oppos- ing team and lost their first ball game 65 - 54. The next night after a poor first half, the Locomotives got rolling and won going a- way from Edon and brought their season's record to 4 - 1. The final score was 58 - 44 in favor of Montpelier. In our next game, over-confidence got the Locos and they lost to a good Hicksville team 60 - 51. The big game with Bryan was a wonderfully played game and was decided by a couple of breaks. The Locos led through three quarters only to lose in the last two minutes 61 - 59. The Locos met Archbold for the second time. The boys cou1dn't get rolling and lost their fourth ball game 60 - 51. Finally, against Wauseon the Locos got back on the victory trail and built up a lead that stood through a rough fourth quarter. We won this game 69 - 62. The Locos played their worst game of the year against Liberty Center, although they finally won by two points 53 - 51. The next night after a poorly played game the Locos came back with a victory. The boys worked the ball and steamed over Paulding 69 - 36. The Locos won their fourth straight game against Napoleon when they broke loose in the last half and in one quarter built up a twenty point lead that the reserves held on to in the last quarter. Final score 69 - 52. As this article goes to press, the Locos are in position to win two league titles. Much of the credit for this year 's record must go to the fine bench. 100 M am c H L b a HART'S DESIRE HOUSER'S M d M I dk DRY CLEANING AND J mom DYE WORKS u s 20 a 20 A.
