The Montpelier Board ot Education is com- posed of men who have been successful in their own various lines ot business and who deserve recognition. They serve in the inter- ests ot the community without compensation, and sacritice much ot their time and energy that the taxpayer's dollar may buy more edu- cation for the children of their city. Ot the tive members ot the Board, Clerks Treasurer Cecil Prosser has served the longest time, having spent twelve years, lohn Rundell comes next on the seniority list with ten yearsg President Waldo Miller and Vice-President Robert Winzeler each have served tour years, and Harry Schwartz has served two years. ln the school buildings, evidence ot tho Boards activities abounds, the greater portion ot last summer was spent in redecorating the schools, resulting in more pleasant surround! ings tor both the teachers and the pupils.

rincqoa H. A. KARNES, Principal Since the time community life began, there has been the problem ot how to maintain this social condition harmoniously and how to better it. The culture handed down from lands and peoples now dead represents 'their highest suc- cesses and advances in community living, to preserve this culture and to aid in preparing new generations to enter their stations in life Well-equipped to add to it, schools were estab- lished. They have evolved from the dim be- ginnings, which primarily contrived to preserve ancient philosophies, to the modem school, whose distinguishing characteristic seems to be increasing practical preparation for living. In the education .ot any individual, therefore, one of the fundamentals is learning how to re- act to the society of which he is to become a part, for there is much evidence that a member of a community cannot be considered separate- ly from his community, each is an integral part of the other. In our school, We have attempted to put this theory into practice by trying to train our students to enter their life Well- equipped. ulaerinfenclenf W. A. HOWALD, Superintendent The high school not only has the problem of preparing young men and women for college but it also must provide types of educational experiences and kinds of activities best suited to the needs and interests of that vast majority ot American youth who, upon leaving the high school, are brought directly in Contact with the most complex civilization the world has ever known and with the problem of making a liv- ing. These young people, too, must share the responsibilities which every citizen has for good and effective government and for the preserva- tion and promotion of the best traditions of American lite.
