A I IDEALS-MAKERS OF MEN, BUILDERS OF NATIONS Ideals, as Carl Shurfz said, are like fhe sfars, you never succeed fouching fhem wifh your hands, buf like fhe mariner on fhe boundless sea, you fake fhem as your guides, and following fhem. reach your desfiny. I have an ideal. Upon fhis ideal my life is based. All fhaf I am and all fhaf I shall be will depend upon fhis ideal. Do you have an ideal? A man begins life as an infinifesimal bi+ of maffer called a cell, Iaden wifh incalcuable pofenfialifies which have accumulafed fhrough- ouf counfless ages of sfruggle, defeaf. and frumph, and he ends life as a disfincf per- sonalify. No scienlfisf gazing af fhis minufe bif of elemenfal composifion can possible predicf whaf if is fo become. Evenfually fhis finy cell comes fo be a living person-an alfogefher new creafion in fhe world-who feels, if he does nof know. fhaf his fhinking has some pur- pose. fhaf he can choose an obiecfive and work foward if, fhaf fo some exfenf. he has a sorf of divinify wifhin him which can shape ifs own ends. Every man forms his ideals early in life. In his mind a drama is consfanfly being enacfed. The chief acfor in fhis drama is himself as he would like fo be. This drama goes on in fhe life of every man. If begins in his childhood and fhe curfain rings down above his grave. And iusf in proporfion as he has chosen in early life a greaf and noble self by which he abides. a self fhaf is approved by fhe highesf demands of his fellowmen for fellowship and service, does he achieve safisfacfion from his life. While you cannof define ideals. if is an easy maffer fo illusfrafe fhem. They are all abouf us. We live by fhern, love by fhem, and die by fhem. One cannof say precisely whaf a nafion's ideals are, buf we see fhem all em- bodied in a simple piece of colored clofh fhaf if calls ifs nafional flag. The clofh is nofhing and fhe color is nofhing. You can fake a piece of fhe richesf clofh-if may be woven of spun gold-and wave if before fhe mulfi- fude, buf if sfirs no emofion because if crys- fallizes no ideal. Buf if you fake fhe cheapesf piece of clofh and cover if wifh sfars and sfripes and wave if aloff, a million men will die for if. I So I say fo you: firsf fo your own self be frue, live according fo your highesf ideals, and if will follow as nighf fhe day, you cannof be false fo any man. I have allowed myself fhis bif of philosophy only because, upon reflecfion: I believe if 'lo be appropriafe. For me fhis book has served a fwo-fold purpose. Firsf, if is an ideal, one for which we have sfriven, and puf forfh our besf. and secondly. if ' is a milesfone. a marker - of fhe end of an era of schooling. and fhe begin- ning of one of life. May fhe Wafcher who serves as audience for our drama upon fhe sfage of Life find us frue fo our ideals! Ralph Flinchbaugh leo-o-Q- DEDICATION We have fried fo incorporafe info fhis Mirror a frue reflecfion of fhe appreciafion we feel for Our Town. We fruly believe fhe welfare of fown and school fo be inferdependenf upon each ofher. The Senior Class wishes fo express ifs humble fhahks fo fhe communify, and dedi- cafes fhe I94O Mirror 'ro Our Town. Page 8
