COMMENCEMENT-MAY 23 The halls grow empty and the silence seems strange. The nine months that looked so endless in September seem to have flitted quickly by as we give them a backward glance. The freshmen suddenly become sophomores. the sophomores-Juniors, and so it goes-a bit of the progression that is typical of life. Perhaps if each of us were asked to write down everything he has learned during the 172 school days, many blank papers would be turned in-not because nothing was learned, but because we're too intoxicated by the sense of freedom that summer vacation brings. We wonit remember every fact and idea that was set before us, but they have become a part of us, making us just a little better able to see the world in which we live and to understand its oddi- ties, population, and potential for us. We hope the knowledge to which we have been exposed will make us better equipped to contribute to our society or to civilization, something of value, as a whole. To the seniors, the close of this school year holds a special significance--it is the end of a high school career and the beginning of a more complex one: adult life in the fast moving, competitive game of the twentieth century. Never before have we realized how widely the trails of life could separate us and so we bid farewell to school and the personalities associated with it. We donit pause to think because it pains us to think that to many of our friends this will be a final farewell.
