T Jas DEDICATION It is very fitting that the theme of our yearbook should be musical, for Montpelier High School has earned state-wide recognition as a school wherein the Music De- partment is excellent. This fine Music Department has been developed by Mr. Wesley R. Baker, who has been teaching here since 1929 when he graduated from the University of Utah. Although he has never missed a year of teaching, he has completed his Master's Degree. He did this in 1936 by attending summer school several summers at Columbia University. Then displaying an almost unquenchable desire for learning, he attended summer school at New York University in 1939. He is a past president of the Fifth District Music Education Association, executive committeeman of the Idaho Education Association, and President of the Teachers' Mutual Benefit Association. He has taken part in the city administration for eight years, serving as mayor four of them. He has a fine family of four children, and his wife is very active in community affairs. We, at Montpelier High School, appreciate the presence and influence of this man who has given so much of himself to make our Music Department outstanding. As an expression of this appreciation we dedicate this yearbook to our Music Director, Mr. Baker. Here we have been learning the three 'GR's,,' digesting dates, ab- sorbing principles, writing formu- las, balancing equations, developing skills, and training our bodies and voices. Important as these things are, We realize that the truest mea- sure of our education will be: That we learned to live together. That we learned to be tolerant of others. That we learned to think for our- selves. A. J. WINTERS Superinterulenf of Schools Wie are fortunate to have as our principal a man with a genuine interest in all our school activities. Mr. Phillips has given the lciamont much of his time and talent. THE STUDENT BODY OFFICERS CAROL MILES Secretary Your work, though it doesn't attract attention, keeps things running smoothly. R N X ELRoYD REX Student Body President We appreciate your friendly advice and leadership. This trio has worked hard to make the school year a success, and not with- out results. If they haven,t been able to fulfill all their campaign promises, it hasn,t been their fault. It has been wisely stated that it is easier to be critical than correct. lt,s easier to follow and mumble than to lead. 7 ,.,..--- ' 4 ' i 'li Q, F 1 A 1 113, 'U f:?! f'f1-g,ng-T2 Q -.,,..-.,,,,, ,, JENS PATRICK WILDE LI-IIAND WILLI.-XNIS Study H311 Industrial :Kris 2 zsX21x FACULTY NIGHT Instead of beating their heads against their blackboards, the faculty relieve their pent-up emotions during an evening of vigorous activity at the grym. S-I CAFETERIA WORKERS These are the women who spend long hours every day cooking tasty meals for the mob that storms through the cafe- teria each noon hour. They make it possible for students to have a hot, low-cost meal every day. This is a special advantage to the out-of- town students and band stu- dents. We appreciate the effort that goes into the preparation of those colorful, steaming trays. I4 CLASSES High school life dawns on the new freshman with a gasp and a sigh as he first steps into the swing of things at our own MHS. Slowly he gains confidence through participation in intramural programs, assemblies, class parties, and just association with others. But about the time he really begins to feel at ease, he finds that it is summer vacation, and he is a sophomore. As a sophomore, his scope of activities increases. He finds courage to belong to a few clubs, talk to a few upperclassmen, and to lord it over the incoming freshmen. Then, after the usual struggle with final tests, he wonders where the year has gone. As a junior, he is an upperclassman himself. Now he really thinks he is hot stuff, or tries to make the younger students think so. The highlight of the Junior year is the Junior Prom, the big dance of the high school career. All the Jun- iors will agree that the Junior year is the hardest of all high school. Nevertheless, he still has time for the class parties, the assemblies, the clubs and organizations, the dances -all the things that help to make a real high school memory. About this time, the boys find that they are the ones on top in the athletics depart- ment, and not the 'folderv kids. Now the Senior year, the dawn of the clos- ing day of the high school career, begins. Hopes for the future begin to take definite shape. Doubts a r e many. But still it's wonderful. And then, GRADUATION! Suddenly it's all over! You,re oui, with only mem- ories, happy ones. we hope. I5 5 I 5 E CLASS OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Nlr. Wilde. Class .-Mlvisorg Doris Baker. We got off to a had start this year by ordering books for a class play. and then failing to even have tryouts. This was choice ammunition for the eynies who enjoy firing such remarks as. There 1-an he no Senior play because there is no Senior class. This lac-k of c-lass spirit persisted until almost the eve of our scheduled class assembly with the result that no assembly was prepared. After a lively discussion as to whether or not we should have an assembly at all. we finally decided to do the best we could with the time and talents available. The result: a very well- received assembly and proof that the Seniors rioulrf :fo SOIIll'fl1I'I1!Q'. Following this success. the Seniors presented the rickety film. Lost Horizonsf, which greatly im- proved the health of the class treasury. Wlith the beginning of the spring thaw came the date of the Senior Ball. Fortunately. at that time we had a good class. and did we ever have a Ball! Though it was no gold mine. financially. we all feel it should be termed a success: the decorations were beautiful. the music' was heavenly. the crowd was just right. and the refreshments abundant. We Seniors look back on our last year at lVI.H.S. with a sigh of relief. a smile of amusement, and a glow of pride. x Q if ,Wx .ibgff ,fe f fs ii: 1 , ,W rid +3535 A fin Q ,V HH x Q ws S ggi, mga -if-' GORDON BARTLONIE Seminary 1: Clee 4: Letter- men's Club 4. TI-IE OPHOMORE CLASS Starting the year off with a bang. we, the Sophomore Class, first exhibited our skills by winning first prize in the Homecoming parade. Our gaily decorated float did the trick. As the largest class in the school we once again proved our cooperation and interest by displaying a. successful Sophomore Hop. Besides adding extra money to our booming treasury, the dance will always be remembered as a memorable occasion. Our many and varied projects included: arousing school spirit by putting up colorful posters in the familiar halls, picking up scattered papers throughout the school, and restoring misplaced pop bottles to their rightful places. Not saying how successful these projects were. we at least tried. Partying seemed to be a great favorite among the Sophomores, for our two class parties were fun for all. A long awaited trip to Lagoon is planned for summer. We can truly say this year as Sophomores, we have demonstrated to show our many good qualities. Representation in all activities and organizations has given us a good start next year as upperclass- men! Looking forward to two more years at MHS we sincerely hope we can repre- sent our school highly with honesty and frankness as our guidance. FRE HMAN CLASS The Freshman class of '58 containing 103 students started the year by being initiated through big brothers and sisters. Terry Bunn represented our class when he was chosen to be one of the four school cheerleaders. In October Ann Kunz was a candidate from our class competing for F.F.A. Sweetheart. The annual class party was held in the MHS gym, December 14. Entertainment of various kinds such as dancing, volleyball, and basketball was furnished to please everyone's taste. Later chili was served to a very hungry group. Throughout the various semesters Ann Kunz, Jimmy Adams, Jeff Nye, and Wayne Tufts all received straight ones. The Freshmen did not lose one basketball game out of the many played. February 7 the Freshmen presented an assembly entitled Around the World in Song and Dancef' Various kinds of music and dancing were used to carry out certain countries. Much time was spent on scenery and costumes, but after, we all felt it was worth it. To sum up the year's activities the Freshmen took one bus and made their way to Lava. After a refreshing dip they bought lunches, viewed Lava and went bicycle riding. Altogether it was a lot of fun. The Freshman class of this year is one of which we all can be proud. , 1,Qc.'V'f V W N'NF0Q'Wwwfwww vfSWMEffb J' 'VC 'fy 'JMW4 W wMJMA'wM9'J '.-r , um uw wr M M MW 'MW X , ' ,, 1 my ' ,,,, 'ullmcf' H . 5' YM ww , PM, ,nw-L , ' mi' J , ,JyW, 'W,W,.,,,1 q, X ' W Wg , N5 M , X xlfglfvrfww - ,. ORGANIZATION This is one of the many ensembles that, along with the hand and Chorus, took superior ratings at the annual music festival at Aberdeen. Mont- pelier was also very outstanding in the field of journalism. The Grizzly took many honors at an annual journalism meet at ISC. The many cluhs and organizations were very active this year. The Photo Cluh had its meetings each Monday with moving pictures on helpful hints to highlight the year. The F.F.A. hoys took an award for MHS in puhlic speaking. At hall games the Pep Club was a real hooster and at halves the Pep- ettes kept the show moving. This year the F.H.A. girls made them- selves red jackets. The past year was a very husv one for all of lVIHS's cluhs and organizations. 67 Q15 24: 'Hi 'Z 'AX 4 S l R, X ' 4 ,4 Q , f - f K K n 0 G l Q l E N IV? Here, the HDoLolVIars,' par- ticipate at the annual Spring Music Festival in which more than 150 stu- dents take part each year. The mem- ories of the trips to Twin Falls and Boise these students took to music festival in past years, and Aherdeen and Pocatello this year, will long he rememhered. The pep rallies give MHS stu- dents the opportunity to use their lungs in another way. The hall game the following day provides them education in the sports world. Dances at MHS are well attended. They range from Sock Hops to Formals. The seniors and juniors have their Balls. and the freshmen and sophomores sponsor their sport dances. The little happenings around the school during the year are seldom rememhered, such as lyreums or the parade of Hsacksf' hut they luring a smile when the Idamont calls them hack to mind. Activities play a hig part in high school. After eight months of planning. the work begins. The building committee, composed of Doris Baker. chairman. Ross Peterson. 'Q sy iff 12?- COMMENCEMENT-MAY 23 The halls grow empty and the silence seems strange. The nine months that looked so endless in September seem to have flitted quickly by as we give them a backward glance. The freshmen suddenly become sophomores. the sophomores-Juniors, and so it goes-a bit of the progression that is typical of life. Perhaps if each of us were asked to write down everything he has learned during the 172 school days, many blank papers would be turned in-not because nothing was learned, but because we're too intoxicated by the sense of freedom that summer vacation brings. We wonit remember every fact and idea that was set before us, but they have become a part of us, making us just a little better able to see the world in which we live and to understand its oddi- ties, population, and potential for us. We hope the knowledge to which we have been exposed will make us better equipped to contribute to our society or to civilization, something of value, as a whole. To the seniors, the close of this school year holds a special significance--it is the end of a high school career and the beginning of a more complex one: adult life in the fast moving, competitive game of the twentieth century. Never before have we realized how widely the trails of life could separate us and so we bid farewell to school and the personalities associated with it. We donit pause to think because it pains us to think that to many of our friends this will be a final farewell. re.. wa . , ,gf 4 gat ,, Q if W f X , 4. -.wif W 4. wf fir 3 if 'A . 4A 1 SPORTS Here we see equipment made to order for all types of sports and games. Football, basketball, track, baseball and the intramural program are full of fun and enjoyment. The Bears took in a new policy for the first time this year, that of no interscholastic competition and in its stead placed a program of intersquad playing which actually increased in- terest toward baseball because of more and larger squads. Players were divided into proportioned teams and took on each other in rough in- tersquad playing. Spring was late as usual and the two sport season was gone soon. However, the season was successful and many more will play again next year. II3 1 Us asv W .Xvw v- i ,. ' ..
