FAZLER JANET HOUSEKNECHT LAURA JANE LOCKARD JUDY G. 1.AP.soN JUDY NATALIE IN MEMORIAM Although Calvin Gehr has been absent from our class since the freshman year, his memory still remains with us. His friendly manners and kind ways made him a friend to every- one. A quiet and subtle person, he was seen but not heard. Tragedy struck Calvin on the night of November 12, 1955, when he was hit by an oncoming car while walking to his home at Warrensville. As an active member of the Wrestling Club, he will long be remembered. He was always thought of very highly by many. Calvin Gehr will never be forgotten by his classmates. 28 SENIOR CLASS PLAY A comedy in three acts entitled Gabriel, Blow Your Horn! was presented March 20, 21, and 22 by members of the senior class. The play's success was attributed to the capable directing of Mr. Robert XVinger. The story took place at Miss Thelma Smitlfs surnmer cabin in the mountains outside Ashe- ville, North Carolina. Miss Thelma gave a house party for Ianet and her friends so that she may forget that absolutely impossible Herb Brown, jr. Ilerb follows janet to the cabin and overcomes the situation by giving gullible Gabe a bribe so that he may act in disguise as a hired man. All goes Well until Miss Thelma discovers Herbis identity. Larry llAllI!ll'l', Susie liddinger. CLASS HISTORY September, 1946, saw many struggling mamas literally dragging their squawling six-year- olds to their first day of school. Little did they know what startling contributions they were making to the vast world of education on that historic day. The greatest event which occurred during our first year in school was the winning of the Mickey Mouse Chair by Miss Hettler's room. Seems that these certain pupils talked their parents into going to the P. T. A. meetings regularly and finally won the dollar prize for having the most parents present. With this dollar they purchased the coveted seat of honor from the appliance store once owned by Miss Hettler's brother. Flute lessons were the big moment in the third grade. The instruments, small, plastic objects of various colors, convinced all of us who thought we were musically inclined, that we weren't. After years of struggling through' elementary education, we finally reached the third floor, 6th grade, and the distinctive title- seniors of the grade schoolf, Two years in the junior high passed, and we soon became freshmen with the privileges entitled to the members of the senior high. The highlight of this year of school was the ninth- grade commencement under the leadership of Mr. Hester. Poor Mr. Hester! After assign- ing the numerous speeches, he began worrying about a song to be sung by the class during the ceremonies. The loudest cry put forth by the class for many days before commencement was, Please, Mr. Hester, not 'The Ballad of Davy Crockettli Adviser and students both decided, after much deliberation, that a more suitable song would be Pennsylvania the Fairf, One of our plans for raising money was a food sale, which was held in front of Bennett's Hardware Store. As many students, who were victims of frostbitten feet, can attest to, the day was extremely cold. Our sophomore year at last arrived and now we were truly a part of the senior high. Academic students will never forget the secret parties held in Spanish class. That period fell during the middle of the morning and ninth grade tummies invariably had to be stoked with homemade fudge or hard pretzels, however many farsighted girls removed the added pounds caused by the snacks by taking RDX reducing pills in Mr. B1air's study halls. The Underground Farmers made their debut during an assembly program and wowed the audience with the then popular Sixteen Tons. The group consisted of Ion Boyer, Ronnie Clees, lim Iohns fnow absent from our classj, Andy Landon, jim Lanfrey, and Mike Rhoads. One of the greatest events of our sophomore year was the presentation of our class play, Love Is in the Airf' This was our first attempt at dramatics, and with a good deal of assistance and direction from Mr. Strein, it was a great success. Craig Kinzer and Linda Nevill made a lovely couple in the play, and who can forget Jodie Bostley hanging upside down in the trees or jim Lanfrey as lovable old Gramps. Suddenly our junior year was upon us, and we had only one more year to wait until we would reach the coveted position of being honest-to-goodness seniors. As we soon dis- 30 CLASS HISTORY covered, our eleventh year was crammed with plenty of hard work. Our class play this year, Come Out of the Closet, was a smash hit and featured such notable performers as Barb Clees, Carol Barbour, Don Shaffer, and Cookie Weaver. Prom arrangements were being scheduled and decided upon by the first of january. Our prom that year consisted of a Hawaiian theme, and as part of our decoration, we draped Kleenex posies, 1800 of them, from one end of the gym to the other. One could never believe that we were finally seniors-the heads of the school-with every student being bogged down with P. 0. D. projects, English themes, chemistry experiments, and the wonderful extra-curricular activities-class play practices, football and basketball games, and preparations for our graduation. The class play, uCabriel, Blow Your Horn, was a tre- mendous success with janie Lockard, Andy Landon, Susie Eddinger, and Sue Klepper shining brightly. Comp class surprise parties, which occurred only on special occasions, helped us to cele- brate the various holidays with an added touch of intrigue. Mr. Hester and the chemistry students will never forget the original Butterfingers,,' Ronnie Clees, who seemed to have the knack for making every thermometer, beaker, and test tube he touched turn into shattered glass. With graduation and the end of our senior year at Montoursville High School, we will end the memories of twelve happy years at the school we will, from now on, call our alma mater. After the processional by the members of the graduating class, The Reverend Mr. Elwood Bair of the Montoursville Methodist Church gave the Invocation. The mixed chorus offered a selection under the direc- tion of William Bailey, music director. The Baccalaureate Meditation was given by the Reverend john W. Anderson of the Montoursville Presbyterian Church. This solemn and religious service will long be remembered by all who attended. COMMENCEMENT The sixtyafourth annual Commencement of the lVlontoursville Area Joint High School was held on May 27, 1958 for the sixtyefour members of the graduating class. MAY DAY May Day at Montoursville Area Ioint High School was held May 2nd in the high school gymnasium under the direction of Mrs. Louise Courtney-physical educa- tion instructor. Betty Burns reigned as queen and was crowned by Linda Larson, the 1957 queen. Attendants were LuAnn Bertin, honor attendant, Iodie Bostleyg Norma Waldman, Mary Ann Weaver, Susie Eddinger, Nancy Smith, Barb Fry, Gerry Botillg Betty Wolfgang, Barb Everett, and Hazel Moore. Escorts for the occa- sion were jim Lanfrey, Ronald McCall, Ronnie Clees, Max Starr, Miles Long, Steve Delp, Mike Rhoades, Paul Kahler, Dave Calehuif, jack Becker, Dick Everett, Frank Hall, and Ion Larson. The girls were attired in full length white gowns and carried bouquets of red roses and white carnations. The afternoon activities were presented by the gym classes. The chorus highlighted the Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Music Week assemblies and the Carden Club Dinner. The greatest production of the year was sponsoring the North Central District Choral Festival. Two hundred twenty-seven singers from thirty area high schools took part in the three day event, February 13-15, with Walter G. Mclver of Lycoming College as guest conductor. P Continuing through the fall months, the band participated in various parades and activities throughout the county. The following students represented our school at the District Band Festival held at Couders- port, April 17, 18, and 19: Dorothy Hensel- clarinet, jackie XVolfe-French horn, Beverly Allison-trumpet, Neil Shipman-trumpet, Syl- via Springman-clarinet, and Betty Wolfgang -saxophone. Seventeen band members attended County Band at jersey Shore on May 8. The annual band concert was held May 23, with girls in gowns and boys in suits, a new attraction which added extra highlights. VARSITY F OCTBALL The XVarriors opened the 1957-1958 cam- paign with a 19-0 loss to jersey Shore. How- ever, the inexperienced Warriors showed a lot of potential in the game. In the second game of the season, the War- riors served notice that they would be tough, as they did everything but push Watsontown off the fieldg but they still had to settle for a 6-6 tie. Montour, hungry for a victory, stymied South Side's noted single wing attack and played win- ning ball against the Mountaineers. All the VVarriors received a chance to play in the Hughesvillc game as Montour downed the inexperienced Greenies, 20-6. Hughesvilleis only score came late in the game against the sophomore team. In the Hfth game of the season, the War- riors, who expected a real tussle, trounced Mont- gomery's Red Raiders with a sweeping 47-6 victory. Montour went into the Canton game a siclc team because of the flu epidemic. However, the determined Warriors won a hard fought contest as they ended the game with a close, final tally of 13-6. The game which would probably determine the West Branch Championship was played against Mifflinburg on November 2, 1957. The Blue and Cold led at half-time and won one of the closest matched games in the history of Montour High with a final score of 14-13. The Warriors, now in first place, met a stub- born Mill Hall team in sub-freezing weather. Although Montour never gave up, the Panthers, stunning defense was terrifically effectiveg and the Warriors came away with a 13-6 loss. Ted Streinis eleven ended a successful sea- son with a sweeping victory over the traditional foe--Muncy. The Warriors were behind at half- time but bounced back during the second half to trim the Indians, 26-13. On Montoursville High Coach Strein receives a word of advice. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Montoursville VVarriors, under the very ahle leadership of Bill Burdett, new head men- tor, finished with a winning record of 12 wins and 9 losses: The team started slow, but showed much improvement as the season progressed. lt was evident that hard work and the desire to improve paid off hy carrying the Warriors to their .first Winning season in several years. The highlight of the season was the upset victory over a very strong St. Maryls team, 56-54, in mid-season. The entire school would like to congratulate Coach Burdett on the fine job he did this year, and the team for showing other schools that Montoursville is the team to beat in the future.
