One Wanhed Zeau 14750 1950 The town of Montoursvxlle was incorporated as a borough on February 19 1850 Previous to hs time it was known as Tea Town Coffee Town and as lumbering town The naming of the pos offlce Montoursville ln memory of Madam and Andrew Montour was the first effort toward giving the town a fixed tltle The first white settler on the slte of thls borough was John Else He built the flrst houses in town General John Burrows laid out the town in 1820 and began sellmg lots which averaged about fifty dollars At the time when Montoursvllle was incorporated it mcluded an area of 1 365 acres and accord mg to the census of 1890 the populatlon was 1 278 The first borough government was organized on February 21 1853 Schoolmg in Montursville began in 1818 when a stone building was erected near what IS now the front entrance of the public park in back of the present hlgh school bulldmg This building was a small eight sided structure which was long looked upon as a curiosity It was one of the flrst schools built in this county The school term lasted for three months at first and the three Rs were taught Among Montoursville citizens who became state wlde and nationally known was Dr Charles Lose prominent educator author and member of the State General Assembly He was born Marxh 9 1856 and dled at his home 21 Loyalsock Avenue on March 4 1940 From the age of seventeen until h s death he was active along educational lmes At the time of hxs death he was completmg his nmth year as presxdent of the Montoursvllle School Board It was durmg his term of office that the present stone high school building was erected This was ln 1931 Positions he held mcluded Supt of Lycom mg County S hools supt of Wllliamsport Schools president of the Pennsylvania State Educatnonal Association principal of Lock Haven State Teachers College and principal of old Muncy Normal It was while head of Lock Haven College in 1919 that Dr Lose became bllnd He served in the State Assembly from 1925 to 1934 Montoursvllle in the early 1800s had four rellglous denominations but only one meetmg place Lutherans as a church It was called the Umon Church because more than one denomination used it and later the White Church because of its color In 1867 the Methodists erected their present day church m 1868 the Presbyternans built theirs the Lutherans in 1870 and the EplSCOP3.1laI'lS nn 1892 The Evangelicals and Baptists came later The early mdustrles of Montoursvxlle centered around the lumber operatlons which were most important in this area Lumber was extracted from neighboring forests and those of Sullivan County and then were floated down the Loyalsock to local mills Due to hurrled and poor lumbering pro cedures much valuable and beautiful forest land was rulned Nevertheless thls period ln our history was undoubtedly one of the most colorful Rafting and boating were also early important industries The furmture mdustry began m 1884 The most prosperous years in this enterpr se were 1894 to 1920 The only remaining furmture company is the International Montoursvilles other primary in dustrxes at the present time are the Carey McFalls Company which manufactures venetian blmds the H Warshow Company a silk mill and a branch of the Sylvama Electric Products Company Montoursvxlle is overly fortunate m that it has one of the most modern alrports of any town its size which serves the Williamsport area The site for the landing field was chosen in 1928 Smce the construction of the modem terminal admlmstratlon building local air servlce has increased and today the airport has a value of approximately S1 500 000 The cltlzens of Montoursvllle did their share in protecting our country and our liberties ln World Wars I and II both in the armed servmces and on the home front Montoursvxlle lost twenty mne men and one woman ln these world conflicts February 19 1950 marked the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Montoursvxlle as a bor ough by the state assembly As we look back now we can vxsuallze the remarkable progress of our community Montoursvnlle now has a population cf about 3 304 is one of the largest boroughs in area in the state and is a very prosperous and interesting town The actual celebration of this anmver sary will take place from June 25 to Julv 1 of this year with a gala centenmal Jubilee Let us not be satisfied with what has been accomplished but seek to make our town better in the years which he ahead 6 - This was the school building.
