SWARTZ IINEERING OI IfICIiR 'Tn--3 The ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT is entrusted to properly operate and maintainthe steam propulsion plam shipboard electrical systems and meehanicalfhydraulie equip: ment. Headed by the Chief Engineer and asissted by the Main Propulsion Assistant QMPAJ, the Damage Control Assistant CDCAJ, the Electrical Officer, and the A Division Officer, they collectively manage to keep the ship safely operating from one point of a transit to the next. The engineering plant also provides fresh water for the 300 men of the crew and 270 embarked Marine Corp personnel. The members of the Engineering Department sometimes work long crueling hours under sometimes less than desirable conditions in an attempt to conduct casualty control and make necessary repairs to the ship. During the l978 - I979 WEST- PAC DEPLOYM ENT the Engineering Department suffered no serious personnel casualties due to the careful and profes- sional practices of all members of the Engineering Depart- YTICIII.
