They can easily be labeled interpreters considering the nature of their job. On many occasions one may find a watch section of signalmen on the signal bridge dashing from a morse code flash- ing light to the signal flags, and then other signalmen performing semaphore with a nearby ship. After all this seemingly confusing action takes place, a calm and collected recorder will simply deliver the message traffic in plain language to the Officer of the Deck, who is anxiously awaiting a reply. Radio- men maintain and operate the shipis communication equip- ment-sending and receiving messages from all over the world. Few people have the security clearance to even look at the equipment they use. Whenever a radio telephone circuit is out ofcommission, or a long lost message needs to be found, on the Monticello one may dial 227 and a friendly duty radioman answers the call.
