WI Operation Specialists fOS'sJ make up Monticello's Ol division. They are a group of highly trained sailors who work in the Combat Information Center QCICJ, a dark- ened space full of electronic gear such as, radars, dead reckoning plotting equipment, and various patched in radio circuits. With their radar they act as the eyes ofthe ship, plotting and reporting the movement of other ves- sels and aircraft operating in the vacinity of the ship. The information is gathered and evaluated and recommenda- tions are delivered to the Officer of the Deck and the Navigator. They can easily be labeled interpreters considering the nature of their job. On many occasions one may find a watch section of signalmen on the signal bridge dashing from a morse code flash- ing light to the signal flags, and then other signalmen performing semaphore with a nearby ship. After all this seemingly confusing action takes place, a calm and collected recorder will simply deliver the message traffic in plain language to the Officer of the Deck, who is anxiously awaiting a reply. How do they remember the meaning of all those signals? -A. SMSA VONKAGELER RMSN VALDEZ
