WI Operation Specialists fOS'sJ make up Monticello's Ol division. They are a group of highly trained sailors who work in the Combat Information Center QCICJ, a dark- ened space full of electronic gear such as, radars, dead reckoning plotting equipment, and various patched in radio circuits. With their radar they act as the eyes ofthe ship, plotting and reporting the movement of other ves- sels and aircraft operating in the vacinity of the ship. The information is gathered and evaluated and recommenda- tions are delivered to the Officer of the Deck and the Navigator. They can easily be labeled interpreters considering the nature of their job. On many occasions one may find a watch section of signalmen on the signal bridge dashing from a morse code flash- ing light to the signal flags, and then other signalmen performing semaphore with a nearby ship. After all this seemingly confusing action takes place, a calm and collected recorder will simply deliver the message traffic in plain language to the Officer of the Deck, who is anxiously awaiting a reply. Radio- men maintain and operate the shipis communication equip- ment-sending and receiving messages from all over the world. Few people have the security clearance to even look at the equipment they use. Whenever a radio telephone circuit is out ofcommission, or a long lost message needs to be found, on the Monticello one may dial 227 and a friendly duty radioman answers the call. They have often been termed Maintenance Activity Afloat and have performed their duties well. When a radar repeater or a radio amplifier just does not seem to operate properly, officers and crew members go out with a loud cry for an ET. After dressing, splashing water on his face, and rubbing his eyes. an ET will appear on the scene loosening bolts and uncovering the guts of sophisticated electronic boxes. He may then resoldcr a wire, replace a circuit card. or simply close the box. and then everything works perfectly. No other department or division can survive without the assistance of the Supply Department. lf a radar fails to operate because of a da- maged circuit card. the Supply' Department will provide a new circuit card from their stock on hand and immediately place it on order. The ship's laundry' is the only means of clothes cleaning while at sea. While serving one meal. the cooks are planning and preparing the upcoming meals. On pay day the supply department generates many happy faces. The Supply Officer and the Disbursing Officer work as a dynamic duo in managing the department. Daily records and accounts are reviewed and monies counted and re- counted. lrom the time when a crew' member submits an order form DD IZSU and the supplies are delivered. only the tnetnbers of the supply department understands the finan- ctgtl magic that takes place in between. On other ships the deck force is necessary, but on an am- phibious ship a deck force is vital. Bringing boats in and out ol' the well deck and getting them to their appoint- ed stations on time are some of the many activities that go on during am- phibious operations. Cargo must be loaded and unloaded ina timely manor. Without the First and Second Divisions on station our primary mission could never be accomplished. 1 I , W 's 'Ns 1 Qi... While conducting a Marine on-load off the coast of Korea. the Monticello experienced large sea swells and rough waves. The wave action produced enough force to lift the 42 ton stern gate from its lowered position. After several rises and falls the stern gate snapped away from its support arms. lmmediately a salvage team was notified and after few attempts the stern gate was recovered. The Monticello transited to the nearest repair facility in Yokosuka. Japan. Local Japanese contractors worked around the clock repairing the hydr21UlIC Sbstem and welding the stern gate back into shape. Within a relatively short period of time the Monti- cello was homeward bound as scheduled. 'QV -1 all .fxiiL.f WINNER IS . GULBRANSON Chief Edilur Layout EditorfCartoonist ln addition to their routine full time duties underway and inport, the staff members volunteered their services in an effort to produce a memorable cruise book. Pictures had to be shot and developed. sales had to be promoted, and money had to be collected. Photographs were scrutinized and prepared for layout plans. Art work and verbage had to be created and developed. A combination of imagination, persistanee, perseverance, and a high level of cooperation were the ingredients that allowed an amateur staff to produce professional results. A job well done!! PROMOTION MANAGER: HTFN FORD attended the very first organizational meeting of the cruise book staff and kept the momentum going, assisting in every way possible. He was tasked to publicize the cruise book and thus generate shipwide support. A well deserved THANK YOU goes to HTFN FORD for his undying support. TREASURER: Producing anything successfully requires a sound management of funds. BT3 PARQUET donated his abilities in managing the finances of sales and production. On several occasions one would find BT3 PARQUET huddled behind a table located close to the pay line vocalizing the sale of cruise books and collecting money for the same. His enthusiastic support and assistance was greatly appreciated. LAYOUT MANAGERXCARTOONIST: OS2 G U LBRA NSON was unofficially assigned the title of ship's duty cartoon- ist . Whenever decorative artwork was desired anywhere on the ship everyone turned to OS2 G U LBRANSON, an extremely talented sailor. His particularly keen art sense allowed him to single-handedly arrange each page of photographs and artwork. The drawings throughout the cruise book are his originals. A particular masterpiece of his can be viewed on pages 48-49: a cartoon depicting liberty call for the USS MONTICELLO. OS2 CiULBRANSON's depth of imagination and tremen- dous talent is evident on every page of this cruise book. Vkfcll deserved congratulations goes to OS2 GULBRANSON for a job well done. CHIEF EDITOR: A relatively new member to LJSS NIONTICELLO upon the start ofthe deployment, ENS IVEY was assigned as Cruise Book Officer in addition to his other routine duties aboard the ship. Having no prior experience in producing yearbooks. he went out with a loud yell for HELP. The forementioned staff members answered the call and the work was done. Every facet in producing this cruise book had to be screened by ENS IVEY. As the Chief Editor he would not rest until the last picture was laid out and the last sentence ofverbage was proofed. Considering the results, the many hours of work by the staff and the many delays were not in vain. ENS IVEY will never forget that painstaking question -- Well, when is the cruise book going to be delivered? CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS ENS McCaNN, ET2 BRODERICK. HT2 UNDERWOOD.
