O TICELLCTS M Rather than an ordinary history of a ship's deployment, or an journal of a WESTPAC Cruise, this book is intended primarily to be about the men of the MONTICELLO - those who command her, those who chip and repaint her, and all those who sweep, fix, sort and stow, keep the boiler fires going or put the unwanted fires out, plot, type, issue, cook or serve - all the men who, as important members of the team, get the ship from here to there safely. smartly, and on time. During the long period of our opera- tional committments on this cruise, our schedules were often uncertain and sul:- ject to sudden change. Time afte r time - and on short notice - we loaded our Marines and their equipment aboard and landed them on the beaches or Vietnam. We spent endless days oft' those beaches, supporting the troops ashore with equipment repairs and supplies, and even acted as a rest and recreation haven, offering fresh water showers, hot meals, movies, and warm racks for the weary. The MONTICELLO acquired such a reputation with the troops who used her welcome mat that she received messages of grateful appreciation from the Commanding Generals of both Marine and Army Forces. We had days and nights of much work and little sleep. but we had our happy times too. Although the liberty ports were few and far between. when ashore in japan, the Philippines.
