He has made our stay in high school a most interesting and enjoyable one. and we will always hold a special place in our hearts for him. We wish him the best of luck in the future of Monti High. 18 When our class thinks of Mr. Rader, we remem- ber the good old days in the Middle School and Room 110. Sometimes we we neglected to see the “human” side of this man, such as his dry sense of humor and friendly smile. It took us a while, but we finally have realized what a help Mr. Rader has been to us. We'd like to thank him for making our years in the Middle and High Schools most memorable. 19 Sunny Abramson Martin Banner Sheryl Bernstein Carol Bahruth Warren Bergstrom Leonard Batch Elliot Bernstein Linda Bohan 20 Arlene Borko Sue Bruno Lee Bradshaw Larry Bryant Florence Brooks Margaret Burke Mary Bury Charles Button Doreen Cappello Bruce DeSandre Robert Dzeidzic Andy DeFeo Gloria De Haven Arleen Di Caprio Thomas Druse Janet Elis Florence Ellenberg 22 Robert Falcone Harriet Gearhart James Gorman Kathleen Feller Samuel Goldych Karen Gregory Kenneth Garry Dale Goodstal Jack Halchak Gladys Horowitz Arnold Hughs Eileen Kalter Lucille Horton Bernard Jacobs Kristine Katzman Karen Hooghuis Neil Jacobs Mary Kemp 24 Edward Kennedy Joseph Leogrande Joyce Mac Adam Linda Klein Fran Lubniewski Barry McDonald Jean Koktavy Kenneth Lyle Judy McGowan 25 Sharon Megiel Gary Monaco At Meier Claire Morgan Eileen Mot Mort Neufeld John Metzger Mickey Morgano Kathryn Oestrich 26 Richard Pallaria Paul Rausch Steven Rovitz Edna Parks Mary Pittaluga Robert Roche Robert Rosengard Madelyn Schneider Richard Shaw Martin Solomon Robert Stewart Harvey Stoloff Joseph Thomas Mary Ellen Smith Timothy Snell Lynn Skolnick Norbert Skalski .jj Nelson Silverstrim Louis Towner Eugene Weinstein Phyllis Yoho Pat Van Etten Evan Williams Robert Walsh Ernest Witkowski Janine Underwood ARA: Jo Wallace Shea Pless Louise Gregory Gigi Oliveri Jo Stratton Custodians ndrew Smith Eric Marsiglia 30 Terrance Stowen Leon King MATH SOCIAL STUDIES SCIENCE Leonard Batch Doreen Capello Arleen Di Caprio Kathleen Feller Karen Gregory Lucille Horton Neil Jacobs Joseph Thomas Bernard Jacobs Bruce DeSandre Janet Elis Robert Falcone Dale Goodstal Mary Kemp Richard Shaw Ernest Witkowski Eugene Weinstein Andrew DeFeo Thomas Druse Gladys Horowitz Morton Neufeld Richard Pallaria Nelson Silverman Robert Stewart PHYSICAL EDUCATION ENGLISH AIDS Edward Kennedy Robert Rosengard Sunny Abramson Larry Bryant Carol Bahruth Susan Bruno Mary Bury Randi Beresa Mary Pittaluga Robert Roche Sheryl Bernstein Pete Colon Jean Koktavy Lee Bradshaw Robert Dzeidzic Barry McDonald Sharon Meigel Eileen Motl Mary Ellen Smith GUIDANCE Kathryn Oestrich Lynn Skolnick MUSIC Warren Bergstrom Evan Williams Arnold Hughs Gloria DeHaven Martin Banner Robert Walsh Steve Rovitz SPECIAL ED INDUSTRIAL ARTS BUSINESS Charles Button Jack Halchak Martin Solomon Mickey Morgano Joseph Leogrande Arlene Borko Linda Klein Kenneth Lyle Margaret Burke Janine Underwood Harvey Stoloff Kristine Katz man READING COORDINATOR ART AUDIO VISUAL Al Meier Elliot Bernstein Norbert Skalski John Metzger ATTENDANCE HEALTH DRIVER ED James Gorman Joyce Mac Adam Gary Monaco Louis Towner Kenneth Garry Mr. Rausch A hearty “Guten Morgen , neckties that sport Latin advice, a deep pleasant laugh, an abiding concern for the education of his students: Hallmarks of Paul Rausch. Mr. Rausch's career has seen the Foreign Language pro- gram expand from Latin and Spanish to French. German, and individual instruction in other languages. He has been person- ally responsible for many of the innovations in the department. His commitment to education has not limited his outside activities one bit. He has served Forest burgh as both Supervi- sor and Fire Chief, has found time to help his wife. Ada. raise nine children, who have presented him with eleven grandchil- dren. He's reputed to be the best grape-stomper in the coun- try. We will miss Mr. Rausch, but we are glad that he will reside in the area. We wish him luck in his new business ventures and in his perennial election campaigns. Mr. Hughs How do we say, “Goodbye, to our music man, Mr. Arnold Hughs, who is retiring this June after thirty-three years of exceptional service to the students and faculty of Monticello? With sadness that he is leaving, for sure. With thanks for the best music program in the state and perhaps the country. With happy memories of the finest musicals this side of Broadway. Words are inadequate to thank Mr. Hughs for his dedication to us all. Fixing broken instruments, whipping his orchestra into shape for “States, producing our famous musicals and con- ducting orchestras so professional that audiences gasped in delighted astonishment: how rich he has made our lives! And so, as you complete your final year at Monticello, the students and faculty offer you a bonquet of love, a special carnation of thanks. It is fitting that your final musical was also your first: The Music Man. This year, however, our applause is not just for the conductor, sartorially resplendent as always; but for Arnold Hughs, Renaissance Man extraordinaire: friend, mentor, educa- tor. We wish you and Mrs. Hughs a happy retirement in Florida. We hope you will keep in touch. We will remem- ber you always with love. 33 34 Class Of 85 £ Accomando. R. Adams. M. Allor. Y. Almonzo. D. We've been pals and enemies, had good times and bad, laughed and cried together, and learned from each other. Here we've collected some of the best. Our story began when we were 5 years old and in Kindergarten. In the Cooke School, our mothers were all thrilled when each kindergartener brought home four chickens from Breeder’s chicken farm. We weren's allowed near “Oevil's Rock on the playground. Do you remember playing cooties? We also played clapping games like Miss Mary Mack, Oh Little Playmate, and Miss Lucy Had A Steamboat.” Upon entering First Grade, Tina DePace and Paul Schop had a wedding. Our class started early in our discovery of the opposite sex. Karen Kurthy and Debbie McCluney ran around kissing all the boys in Mrs. Oppenheim's class. At their Halloween party, Debbie knew when to stop- Karen didn't. She ended up in the corner and missed the party. Meanwhile, at the Duggan School, Kevin Kennedy was the Gigolo of the first grade. He had wild birthday parties and ran around kissing all the girls. Some people never change. Other memorable events: Tina DePace cried during the song Go Tell Aunt Rhodey the Old Grey Goose Is Dead , because she loved ducks. Sue Gorton brought her St. Bernard to school. Odette Rodriguez wore a dress once in her lifetime—to Jeanine Kloss's birthday party. Mrs. Winterberger's second grade class was a busy one. She told her students to call her Mrs. Snickelhooperstinehop- per. Jeanine Kloss, Tracy Taylor and Sara Pizano used to sit behind the piano and gossip. Elly Weglinski left Mrs. Winterberger's class because whenever Elly couldn't do a math problem, Mrs. Winterberger would hit her over the head with her math book. In Mrs. Kennedy’s class, Earl Wearing, Tyrone Baker, and Eric Manson used to beat up Karen Coble. A couple of years later, Earl decided she wasn 7 so bad after all and went out with her... Nancy Briggs wore her nightgown to school as a long dress... Mrs. Golnick used to make all the bad boys sit in the hallway... Tracy Taylor and Sara Pizano each got a kiss from Mr. Lake, the principal: Tracy for perfect attendance and Sara for writing a book . . In Monticello we graduated from Cooke to Rutherford and entered the third grade. In Mrs. Pollack's class, Richard Sedlack kissed Ann Feinman and everyone thought that was what marriage was. Walter Jennings gave away his mother’s jewelry to all the girls in his class. Mrs. Pollack had a problem with people writing on the bathroom wall. She made the whole class put their heads down so the guilty person could sneak into the bathroom and erase the bad words, without the class knowing who the guilty party was. Her plan didn’t work since everyone peaked. It was Richard Sedlack. Michael Morganstein starred in the class play, The Emperor's New Clothes, and had to wear bright led leotards. Can you just see him now? Remember when Mr. Lamberti came back from Christmas vacation with a wig? Friday was dress up day in the Rutherford School? We had to sit boy, girl, boy, girl as punishment in the cafeteria? In fourth grade, Mr. Mack became one of our favorite teachers. He wrote those fabulous inventive stories about people who could ask the molecules in a wall to move and then pass through it. His class play, The Return of Peter Pan, starred Paul Strauss, who had to wear tights of bright green. For the rest of the year. Miss Glied called him Sexy Legs . Andrea DeSimone was “Tinkerbell . Vaughn Gibbs was the villian, “Captain Hook’’, then he had the nerve to move to Middletown and become a basketball star. Eileen Bogursky used to beat up all the boys, so Mr. Mack called her “Knuckles Bogursky. Paul Schop had many things thrown at him, including Mr. Mack's books and a piece of chalk by Mrs. Leshner which hit Marianne Armstrong by mistake. The next day, Mrs. Leshner rode her bike to Marianne's house and gave her a lollipop. Down the hall in Miss Glied's room, Mr. Bennett got angry at Mike Bates one day during art and made him scrub the desks. Then he told Mike that if he shaved his head and pierced his ear, he would look like Mr. Clean. Miss Glied's class play also was a crowd pleaser. They performed “Jack and the Beanstalk. John Marinello was the beanstalk. Tracy Taylor was Cloverbell the Cow. She later had to play the Giant when Gary Korth got sick. Miss Glied called her “Mouth. The kids loved Miss Glied: Lori Gordon showed her affection one day by calling her “Mommy''. In Mrs. Leshner's class, Sara Pizano wore a dress with a tong zipper in the front. Sonia Dumas unzipped it. Unfortunately, this was before the “bra-era. Mr. Damesak made his class recite poetry on stage. The whole fourth grade booed. In the Duggan School, Andrea Jackson and Erica Colberg wrapped little beads from Erica's Bermuda tourist pocket book with gum and threw it in Valerie Meddaugh's hair. in Fifth grade we were real big shots- The “seniors of the elementary schools. Elly Weglinski and Marianne Armstrong got to work in the office on the secretary's lunch break and fought over who got to answer the phone. Mr. Johnson promised his class that he would braid his hair if all the girls in his class wore dressed on the same day. They did, so the next day Mr. Johnson came to school in corn rows. We were all impressed by Miss Scairino. She could throw a medicine ball across the gym. Sara Pizano was her pet whom she called “Pouches. Miss Schroder made her class go all the way to the water fountain by the office to made her “bug juice. In a fit of temper, Mr. Heigh blurted, “John Payne-You really live up to your name! Do you remember.. . Mr. Garcia's favorite song-“Head And Shoulders ?... Playing “King and Queen” and “7-UP with the aids before lunch? . . . Calling Mr. Lamberti “Ba-Ba-Tweet-Tweet? On the first day of sixth grade, we entered the Middle School, asked eighth graders for directions, and were sent all over creation. It was also on the first day that Lori Rubin, after the “Pledge of Allegiance, burst out into a solo rendition of “My Country 'Tis Of Thee. Study Hall became our favorite class, but it wasn't all fun and games for Tracy Taylor and Suzanne Hollander when Mrs. O'Bannon gave them detention. They cried all day. Brian Wells and Paul Strauss used to catch flies and remove their wings during Study Hall in the small gym. Scott Braunstein dumped his milkshake all over Ericka Cohen at the Red Apple Rest during Team 1’s trip to N. Y.C. Brainy Paul Strauss started to answer his Stanford Achievement Tests five seconds before he was supposed to. Mr. Kleckner got mad and ripped up Paul's answer sheet. Being the good soul that he was, and having no answer sheets left, he taped it back together. In cooking class, Eileen Bogursky and Tracy Taylor made up their kitchen's work schedule and everyone wondered why they never had to wash dishes. Speaking of food, Lori Rubin threw her retainer out after lunch and spent the whole day going through the cafeteria garbage bags. Sixth grade was a big year for holidays. Susan Gorton gave Mr. Rathbun a flea collar for Christmas . . . Billy DePuy dyed his hair green every St. Patrick’s Day . . . Miss Patterson and Miss Lougheed dressed Billy Bailey as the Easter Bunny. Do you remember... What kind of people wore green on Thursdays?... Miss O'Brien's notebook check-the “shake- test” over the garbage can?... when no one understood left and right Wednesdays?... When Brian Wells got a spitball stuck up his nose? . . . When Miss Lougheed brought pomagranites into school for her classes to eat? We entered seventh grade, glad to know our way around the Middle School. This was the year when Home Ec and Shop became co-ed. The boys were horrible in cooking. In Mrs. Weiner's class, the green kitchen put salt in the brownies instead of sugar and got F's. Scott Braunstein was absent for the cooking final. He had to take the make-up in the hallway. Everyone went out to get “a drink of water” and told him all of the answers. Down the hallway in biology, Lori Gordon and Debbie McCluney tied Mr. Lanuti's shoes together and he hopped around the room for ten minutes looking for a pair scissors. Lori added a lot of excitement to our school year. She was bored in Mr. Mecca's English class one day, so she studk her pen in the light socket. She became a national hero when the fire department arrived and there was a two hour fire drill. Lori was sent to Mr. Etkind’s office and she denied everything. He knew she was guilty, however, because her broken pen had leaked all over her pants. The only time Marianne Armstrong raised her hand in class was to ask Mr. Victor, who persisted in calling her “Maria, why the raised type in Braille books didn't get flattened when they were closed. Remember. . . when Mrs. Langham wore purple tights and orange mini skirts . . . When Marilyn Reyns wore her pink knit hat every day. . . Erica Colberg fell on her head... We had to read the paper cover to cover for Mr. Victor’s class and all the parents complained at open house. . . When Tracy Taylor and Scott Braunstein kept the Izod Lacoste Co. in business.. . James Borwick wore shorts to school all the time so the girls could admire his legs... We lost a quarter of our class to the class of '83 4s we hit eighth grade, we anxiously awaited that big step over to the “Big School Down the Road. As the days went on, we became more and more educated. One day Mr. Baczowski brought his little nephew to school and he pulled down his pants in Mr. B’s second period class. Upstairs in “Espanol , Lori Rubin did a cartwheel and banged her led on a desk. She swears that to this day she still has a bruise. Also in Mr. Alvarez's class, Sue Haera didn’t hand in her final because she knew that she was going to fail. She told Mr. Alvarez that she had handed it in; he told her he must have lost it. On Sue's report card she got a “C for her final exam grade. Spanish was more like chorus to Sara Pizano, Lori Rubin and Karen Kurthy. Every day they sang about their heart-throb, Shuan Cassidy. Other famous selections were “You Light Up My Life and “Tomorrow. Nancy Briggs learned a lot in Health. Mr. Heins made Nancy and Brian Wells hold hands to see if their heartbeats sped up-they did. She didn’t learn that much because on her final exam Nancy wrote that one method of birth control was “getting spayed. Angel Lori Rubin gave Mr. Heins the finger for not recommending her for HP Science. In Mr. Graham's class, John Stasko, Barbara Pinto, and Brenda Heins threw all of his test tubes out the window. In Miss Lautenberger’s 4th period class, she was constantly being taunted. She claimed that she didn't dye her hair. Brian Wells and Scott Braunstein asked her why the roots were black and she replied that her hair must have been dirty. Mr. Heins was going to give his 8th grade science trophy to someone in his 3rd period class. Paul Schop stood up to receive it, and Mr. Heins gave it to Denise Simanovicz. English was the sight of many humorous happenings. Mr. Lubin's classes made commercials. Scott Braunstein advertised detergent and dressed up as a housewife in a green dress. Teresa Gregory, Marianne Armstrong, and Debbie McCluney spelled vocabulary words to each other in sign language in Mr. Lubin's English. In Mr. Mecca’s class, Suzanne Lander gave Mr. Mecca a referral. -TB Mrs. Allowe loved Paul Strauss. She made him kiss her every day. Nancy Briggs told the whole school that Andy Gibb was coming to the eighth grade graduation dance. She was confused-it was really Perry Gips. Ronnie Welsh was also confused this year. During confirmation, he misunderstood the priest’s instructions. He drank all the wine from the cup that the whole class was supposed to share. We had some trouble with test taking. Karen Kurthy and Lori Rubin were sitting next to each other during the Stanford Achievement Tests. During the break, their papers somehow got switched. At the end, they realized the mistake, and had to sit in Miss Lanigan's office and erase and rewrite all the answers. Janice DeFrank had a simpler approach-she didn’t like Mr. Heins, so she filled out the answer sheet to the SAT wrong on purpose. Eighth Grade Memories. . . We had the first Middle School yearbook. Lucy Sze and Paul Strauss were editors. . . We had raisin fights in Mrs. Racine’s French Class . . . We had two new-comers in our school—Barbara Pinto and Denise Simanovicz... We used to eat in Mr. Heins’ and Mr. Kaufman's rooms. . . Erica Colberg and Andrea Jackson skipped class and hid behind the curtains on stage all period . . . Judy Murran laughed through her election speech, but won anyway. Her slogan was “Shake your booty-vote for Judy . . . Patty Croissant and Janice DeFrank gave Mr. Kaufman twenty prank phone calls in one night and got caught the next day... Ed Escobar used to smack himself in the face to make his nose bleen so he wouldn’t have to take any tests. . . Andrea Jackson and Charlie Grant stole a blanket from the ski patrol room to have a kissing contest on the trails. Two years later it was still hanging from a tree. .. Sue Gorton painted the window shades in Mrs. Mecca’s room.. . Patty Croissant and Brenda Heins put a dirty sign on Mr. Waltzer’s door. He thought Janice DeFrank did It and sentenced her to a week's detention. After she served it, Patty and Brenda admitted they did it.. . Someone stole Andrea Jackson's pants from her gym locker. . . Our grade school years were finally over. The class of 1982 entered Monticello High School with a bang. On the second day of school, Debbie Cahill and Barbara Pinto broke a window in Mr. Neufeld's room. All the kids in Earth Science HP would get the test answers from the twelfth grade class, and Mr. Burr wondered why we were so smart. Mr. Zucker wore his blue corduroy pants for twenty three days straight. His HP Algebra class counted. In his CP class, Erica Colberg copied off Nancy Brigg's test. She had ait the right answers but for the wrong test. One day, in Spanish, some seniors placed a remote control car in Miss Yoho’s room and monitered it from the hallway. The car zoomed around the room and Miss Yoho blamed Odette Rodriguez for it, because she laughed first, and sent her to the office. Tracy Taylor, Sara Pizano, Nancy Briggs, and Lori Rubin were a main attraction at Great Adventure when they did a can-can dance in front of a band. Freshman Memories... Mr. Zucker called Nancy Crawford “Slinky . . . Miss Owen wore her bumblebee suit. . . We experienced the joy of being able to go to our lockers anytime we wanted to...Everyone called Mr. Burr “Larry Bird ... We looked up at lane with awe and respect... We took our first regents. The debate team also had a wild adventure in ninth grade. The debate station wagon caught on fire when Mrs. Skolnick took Sam Levine, Mike Weinsoff, Tracy Taylor, and Scott Braunstein on a debate trip. Mrs. Skolnick leaped from the car and then the entire debate team proceeded to wait along the New York State Thruway for four hours. Surviving the hardships of their Freshman year, the class of '82 moved on to tenth grade. Cele Bisguier got mixed up one day and went to study hall instead of English class. Cele didn 't notice that she was in the wrong class until the end of the period. On the soccer bus, Nancy Crawford, Lynne Berman, and Barb Pinto pulled off Odette Rodriquez's shoes and socks only to find that she was wearing bright red nail polish on her toes. Neither students nor teachers were safe from embarassment that seemed to plague Monti High in our sophomore year. During Mr. Falcone’s 6th period social studies class, he decided to make himself comfortable by sitting on one of the desk tops in his classroom. The desk broke and sent Mr. Falcone tumbling to the floor. Diane McDonald didn't stop laughing for two days. Some might question the sanity of a number of people in our class. For instance, who, other than Eileen Bogursky, could burn her foot in the bathtub and end up on crutches for three weeks??? Mr. Creegan had an interesting class that year. Pam Bracey read her social studies report straight out of her textbook. Cheryl Bennett and Stella Cosh used to copy off of each other in Mr. Creegan’s class. Stella got A’sand Cheryl got B ’s. Before each test Stella would always ask a million dumb questions to stall for time. Richard Maurer broke his knee and came to class in the guise of a little metal box, which connected his hospital room to the school. In social studies class, when Mr. Falcone walked away from Richard's box he spoke softly; the closer he got to the box, the louder he spoke. During Mrs. Skolnick's English class, Richard used to watch “Wheel of Fortune from his bedside and keep the class posted about all of the game shows that he had seen that day. Before Richard's accident, he was a brilliant student. In Mr. Falcone's class, he informed the class that the movement of the Renaissance was called “Botulism. In one of Mrs. Skolnick’s CP classes, students used to stamp their feet when she walked. Sophomore year was the year that we had to take “Public Speaking’’ for a marking period in English. This class was the scene of many embarassing, interesting, and almost always very funny speeches. Two of the most memorable were given by Ed Escobar and Suzanne Lander. When Ed's turn came around, he brought in a puppy. The puppy left a little something for Mr. Bradshaw to remember him by. Eddie had to clean it up. Everyone was shocked when Suzanne did her informative speech on how to roll a joint. Mr. Bradshaw didn't exactly appreciate her giving us the know-how. Bunce Marcus had some very interesting lunches during his sophomore year. He brought beer to school as his lunchtime beverage. It was almost a miracle that he didn’t get caught. In later years, however, Sergio Barrantes attempted a similar act and was caught red-handed when he attempted to drink his “luchtime beverage'' during Mr. Witkowski's social studies class. One day Bunce was priviledged to experience an even better, more delicious lunch. Tracy Captain put two cotton balls into his yogurt. Bunce ate them. He thought they were strawberries. Some people in our class would like to make it in Show Biz. In tenth grade, Andrea Jackson discovered that she had a chicken pox mark just like Brook Shields’ and now she wants to be a model. Theatre is an aspiration of some. At the final performance of “Oark Victory, Cele Bisguier, the female lead, received a bouquet of carnations and a sympathy card. Mohticello’s Interact Club held a wild bash at 3 AM at the convention at Kutsher's. The room they held it in was directly above the room of the Rotary District Governor. Junior year thoughts... Harold McArdle pretended to trip and threw plastic throw-up on the floor... Mr. Burr used to call Odette and Patty “Mutt and Jeff” and they always fought about who was going to be Mutt. . . Barbara Pinto and Tracy Taylor used to organize days where they would get people to dress alike . . . Everyone thought that Michelle Arkin was our exchange student. When she came back to school from summer vacation, everyone told her to go back home because she was here last year. Everyone loved Geometry. In Mr. Lacey's 5th period math class, Odette Rodriguez and Pam Bracey were sent to the office every day, and the rest of the class had paper fights all period. The only people that paid attention were Jami Bocket and Howard Rubin . . . They were also the only ones who passed the Regents. m Remember. .. When Brian Wells was reading a dirty magazine in study hall and Mrs. Skolnick caught him. . . Odette Rodrguez popped a soccer bat! on the goat post at Goshen . . . Our school got blamed for throwing rocks at Valley Central's bus (we wouldn't do a thing like that) ... Dr. Kitey retired as principal. . . Somebody stole every Regents but the ones that we had to take ... We survived our second year at Monti High . . Our Junior year arrived at last. The class voted for the prom theme, “We've Got Tonight, and started making way for the big event. After a Junior Prom meeting, Barb Pinto, Jodi Greenwald, Sara Pizano, Chris Tully, Denise Simanovicz, and George Frick went to Burger King. Chris wore a gas mask; Barbara had on a pair of dark sunglasses - backwards; Jodi had purple dots painted on her face. Sara threw nickels at Chris, who was tap dancing on the table. They were the only ones there, and the applauded the people as they came in. ! Disaster struck right before the prom. Sara Pizano threw out the crowns by mistake, and the garbage had already been picked up by the time she realized it. Sara, Brian Wells, Jodi Greenwald, and Brenda Heins sat in front of the dump's closed gate and stared at the mounds of garbage. The prom itself was a success, despite a few minor hitches such as dancing partners. The balloting seemed to match tall with short. George Frick had to dance with Sara Pizano; Judy Murran danced with Villena; and Chris Tully kept telling Barb Pinto to take her shoes off so he wouldn’t look so short. After the prom, Sara had a breakfast at her house, and everyone passed out in her driveway. English teachers will be remembered for the events in their rooms during the eleventh grade. In Mrs. Skolnick’s class, Patty Croissant and Odette Rodriguez always tried to get each other into trouble. Mrs. Skolnick got so confused that she didn't yell at either of them. Ericka Cohen, in Mr. McDonald's class, shot rubber bands from her mouth - they were hooked to her braces - at him. We finally got back our term papers from Mrs. Mante's 11 HP English class in September of our senior year. She wasn't that quick, however, with our Hamlet unit test, which we took in November 1980. We still haven’t gotten them back. Science class was also a thrill a minute. In Mr. Druse’s HP Chemistry class, Rob Deschambeault, John Duggan, Tracy Captain, Denise Simanovicz, and Oscar Santiago all failed a marking period because some fools had stolen their labs. It’s true: anyone who would steal Rob's or John's labs must be a fool. This class was full of pranksters. One day, when Mr. Druse walked out of the room, the whole class turned their desks around to face the back. Paul Strauss used to steal filmstrips when Mr. Druse wasn’t looking. In first period class, Sara Pizano's strap broke white she was doing a tab. Ericka Cohen and Jodi Greenwald laughed hysterically as Sara maneuvered out of it behind the lab table. Mr. Pallaria didn 't miss the excitement. His fourth period class protested any work. They all sat in the hall for half an hour. Finally, Mr. Pallaria came out and pleaded with his class to return to the room. Social Studies provided some entertainment, aside from teaching us about such important events as “The Whiskey Rebellion and “The New Deal. Mr. Falcone became very confused one day when Patty Croissant flipped the record for the filmstrip over when he wasn’t looking. On Slave Day, Mr. Jacobs made Scott Braunstein and Richard Mauer sit in the corner because they looked so dumb. Do you remember. . . Everyone took turns wearing Erik Rhulen's pornographic T- shirt?. . . Mrs. Feller called Nancy Briggs, “Briggsy, Baby? . . . Marc Anthony brought “movies to one of the parties?. . . Stella Cosh smacked Farid Kerendian’s face for taking her candy cane? . . . Odette Rodriguez mooned the track team and got an extended vacation ?... Tracy Taylor’s soda exploded during lunch all over a table of underclass boys, and they wanted to beat her up?. .. Ericka Cohen and Sara Pizano got sent to the office for picking dandelions during a fire drill?. .. Susan Gorton and Vicki Valachos discussed the different tenses of curse words? . . . £ l i 121 There were many times when we got into trouble. One day, Mr. Witkowski yelled at Marianne Armstrong and Debbie McCluney during Study Hall for talking, but they were talking in sign language. In Z lunch, smoke bombs kept going off, and everyone kept looking at the table where Patty Croissant, Odette Rodriguez, Steven Crawford, and Mike Browne were sitting. During the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Interact members threw pies at teachers and got whipped cream on the $ 15,000 curtains. They spent the rest of the day trying to scrub them dean. One day, Sara Pizano, Odette Rodriguez, and Ericka Cohen were sitting inside the locker room. Sara Suggested that the next gym day they all stand “outside the green. Her timing was right on: Mrs. Bury walked in and heard her. VJe will always remember Odette and Patty as the class pranksters. They used to set all the tables in the cafeteria during seventh period study hall so that they would fall. When the bell rang, Mrs. Skolnick had to pick them up. One day they picked the lock on Miss Atack's car and put bags of leaves in the front seat. Then they relocked the car and walked innocently away. When we turned sixteen, most of us got our driver's permits and signed up for Driver's Ed. It didn’t help all of us. Veronica Butler was making a K-turn one day. Mr. Towner said. “Watch out for the .. . just before she hit the snowbank. Mr. Towner is really a very calm teacher in harrowing situations. Ericka Colberg was going 55 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. All Mr. Towner said was, “By the way, what is the speed limit?'' Driver’s Ed did not help Sara Pizano too much when her little red truck stalled seven times by the Police Station. Odette Rodriguez kept laughing hysterically, even when she noticed they were rolling into the other lane. Aside from getting our licenses, we were also getting a bit braver. Some of us decided to try to sneak into Roark's. One night the police raided, however, and the whole group in the back room fled through the back door in a matter of seconds. Everyone will always remember Mr. Monaco for his famous sayings like, Whoaa, ’’ and his grading system of “aces, bullets, and hooks. Valerie Meddaugh will remember him for the way he used to call her “Blondie with an Italian accent. Buncie Marcus hated gym, so he got a doctor's note to be excused. He insisted, however, that his knee was strong enough for him to play ping-pong. Mrs. Bury made him write a report about his knee, and he got only a B plus. Mr. Harding stopped Barbara Horton in the hall and asked to see her pass. She handed him a pass to the math office, forged with Mr. Stewart’s signature. Mr. Handing handed it back after he had looked at it and said, “Okay. I know you wouldn't forge a pass. in photography class, Mr. Skalski made us hand in two sketches a week. Charlie Grant used to hand in the same sketches, slightly changed, with the grade repeatedly erased. Do you remember when Marta Casanova pulled the chair out from under Denise Simanovicz in Spanish AP? AH the boys cracked up. Denise was wearing a dress. September 1981 rolled around at last, and we were finally seniors. We started working on the yearbook and had the magazine drive. Mr. Rosengard ate all the candy bars that were supposed to be given out as prizes during the drive. We acquired a new Earth Science teacher and suddenly all the girls wanted to take Earth Science. On the first day of school, Mr. DeFeo went around his class asking people what they wanted to be called. Odette Rodriguez responded, “You can call me Sugar Lips, Honey! Karen Kurthy and Lori Gordon put a notice in Mr. DeFeo’s mailbox, informing him of a fan club started in his honor. Later, Barbara Pinto got blamed for it. In September, we attempted to have our first Senior Class Picnic. Everybody got caught, and Mr. Harding told us: Now it's police business, and we didn’t know what he was talking about. Home Ec. became a popular class with us. In first period cooking class, Lynn Berman and Tracy Taylor ate a whole pizza by themselves in less than ten minutes. They were sick the whole day. Elly Weglinski talked out in Mrs. Parks' money management class one day, and Mrs. Parks made her sit in the comer, facing the wall. Sitting on Lane also became a favorite senior activity. One day, someone threw a football on lane. It ricocheted off Lynn Berman's foot and hit Brenda Ryder in the head. She turned around and exclaimed, Whoever threw that - your mammy don't wear no drawers!!! Remember the day Ann Feinman was sitting next to Gary Huebner on Lane? She meant to pretend to hit him on the nose, but ended up making it bleed. He dripped all the way to the nurse. Some people get bored on Lane very easily. Others get hungry. One day, Janice DeFrank, Debbie Cahill, Judy Murran, and Jodi Greenwald were hungry during second period, so they took a cab to the bagel bakery and back. We got new furniture on Lane in October. By November, one of the couches had mysteriously caved in. It was in the twelfth grade that Tracy Taylor made the profound statement that Roark's is the malt shop of Monti High. Seventeen-year olds Tracy and her buddy, Eileen, used to point out the minors to the bartender for free drinks. Lunch in the cafeteria was fun, too. In sixth period lunch, Stella Cosh, Denise Simanovicz, Michelle Arkin, Ed Escobar, and Chris Breen used to give everyone standing ovations, and Bill Bailey's table used to take the encore. During 4th period lunch, Mr. Williams finally got fed up and disbanded the troublemaking table. In a week they were back together. Onde day, Nick Papagni threw a rubber worm into Chris Breen's spaghetti. She chased him the length of the cafeteria with her piate of spaghetti. When she finally threw it at him, she missed and hit the wall. Mr. Halchak always yelled at Odette Rodriguez and Patty Croissant, so they gave him a bottle of Midol and told him to calm down. Once they sprayed Chantilly on him when he wasn't looking. Remember when... Jodi Greenwald and Diane Smithem got out of Bellevue... Tracy Taylor announced on the AM announcements: All U. Mass debators, please pick up your claim forms £ . Everyone thought the guy stranded on the island in the Time magazine looked just like Mr. Witkowski. . . Paul Strauss and Richard Maurer followed up Lynn Berman's act by swallowing quarters on the same night. . . Many senors like to take elective classes during their last year in school, and one of the most popular classes is Mrs. Kemp’s Women's Studies course. Apparently, one day, Nancy Briggs was bored and fell asleep. She was awakened by Michelle Arkin, who noticed that Nancy had been drooling in her sleep. John Payne has always been one of the class downs. One day he stole Jay Drilling's wallet when Jay wasn’t looking. Jay went to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a new license. The next week, John found two dollars in a pocketbook that was around Sophis DeBow’s shoulder. She never noticed it either. One a take-home test in math, for the answer to a graph problem, John Wrote, See Cheryl Bennett's paper. ” Every time a paper was due in Government, John would stay out of school and hand it in late just to make Mr. Witkowski angry. Remember the time that Sara Pizano tried to give Kevin Kennedy a wedgie and ripped his underwear... Nick Papagni fought the Reds and Gun Control. . . Odette Rodriguez let soccer go to her head, and Debbie Cahill had an attitude problem... Michelle Arkin always got into trouble in Probability and Statistics... the blotter in the yearbook office had more graffiti than the subways in New York... Lane was freezing all winter... Congratulations to Tracy Taylor and the Class of ’82 from 272 59T 278 280 An End, Yet A Beginning There are three minutes left ‘Till the last bell will ring The last day of our senior year Most kids will sing, But inside their hearts They cry out with sorrow Their childhood is over They're adults tomorrow. They think of the laughter, The sadness, the tears, The memories built up In these past four years. They think of the teachers and how they all tried To give them a look At that big world outside. They think of the parting Of a very close friend And begin to realize That all things do end. Someday they’ll find yearbooks Of these days gone by ... . And remember the good times At Monti High. We hope that we’ve helped to capture some of the memories that we’ve all shared at Monti High. Good bye, Monti High and thanks for the memories!!
