MONTI Will you seek afar off? You will come back at last to things best known to you, finding happiness, knowledge, not in another place, but in this place— not for another hour, but this hour. Walt Whitman .L-’ BOARD OF EDUCATION: FRONT: Cloria Winarick, James Culligan, Pres.; Gerald Briggs, Ida Mae Mitchell, Vice-Pres.; BACK: Harold Culver, Allan Wolkoff, Fred Obermeyer, Gerald Seitel, Paul Monti ADMINISTRATION Thomas P. There have been moments of joy, or sorrow, of embar- rassment, even of terror: many of them are memo- Kim Badendyck 26 Nora Baker Randy Barber Bruce Baker rable. Kindergarten brought the terror of bus rides, the joy of new friends, and the embarrasment of having to ask the teacher for permission to go to the bathroom. Some of our problems began in kinder- garten . . . We all liked to ride on the seesaw, but Suzie Verdi couldn't get off the 27 Jon Bergstrom ground until at least two people sat on the other side. Over in Wurtsboro, Marc Graubard, after closing a door on Terry Bray's finger, ran all the way home so he wouldn't get yelled at by Mr. Diamond. In White Lake, David Thompson threw his building blocks through Iris Blank 28 Russell Bloom the classroom window. Most of us excelled in kindergarten and went on to bigger and better things . . . first grade. Mrs. Wenterbereger locked Abe Steier in a guinea pig cage for two hours because he couldn't do his math problems. Jody Van Etten stole Janice Hyde's shoes be- cause they were velvet. 29 Terrie Bray Ronald Burns Ann Marie Brvan Laurie Brochu Donna Brodie Cynthia Broskin They were returned the next day with an apology from Jody and her mother. Second grade brought on some heavy ro- mances Shelly Cohen was in love with Ira Steinberg. Their birthdays are on the same day, and Ira gave Shelly a matching neck- lace and bracelet. Steven Burns 30 Christiano Butler Mrs. Whitaker dumped out Mitchell Forman's desk every day because he was so messy. Keith Alenky was nick- named Elephant Ears . Recess was an enjoy- able break from the class- room routine. Jeanne Van Etten and Mindy Appel ran around the play- ground as Mama Butterfly and Baby Butterfly. John Catalino 31 Janice Chayut Even the largest stu- dents ran around the playground during recess. One day Andrew Ross (who then weighed 120 lbs.) split his pants and took a tearful detour to the bathroom. Second grade romance turned into third grads heartaches. Third grade also began 32 Michael Cooper Marie Culver Timothy Culligan Debbie Bennett's three year crush on Steven Kapito (later renamed Geek ) who liked every- one but her. She fir.ally realized that it was her love notes that drove him away. Of the hundreds of notes she sent, all began: No matter how hard the wind blows, it will never blow away my love for you 33 Richard DePace 34 I imothy Dexter Valerie Dombal Denise DeSio John Driscoll In fourth grade, we began to show some of our talent and ability. In Wurtsboro, There was a milk-drinking con- test which was won by Carl Canfield. He drank eleven cartons and later splattered them all over the bathroom wall. Mary Ann O'Neil, Cynthia Dissinger Kevin Doty r Jason Farrow Michael Ferguson Kenneth Druckman Cindy Niven, Rachel Rosenberg, and Carol McNealy used to hide in the stall and stand on the toilet so they could watch Miss Heusner brush her teeth after lunch. One day, Mary Ann's foot accidently fell in the toilet. The two fatsos of the fourth grade, Jeanne Van Camera Shy 35 Michael Florio Mitchell Forman Etten and Susan Chernoff, used to fight with each other every day. Debbie Stratton and Lauren Gellman were the bullies of Miss Swartout's fourth grade class.Lauren, jealous that Debbie was the teacher's pet, got to school early one day and surprised Debbie by having the whole class 36 Bruce Gersten Douglas Gettel give her the cold shoulder . We always laughed at the teachers but some- times the tables were turned . . . like the times the love notes and stories from Ricky Okun and Danny Meyer to Jill Law- ler and Shelly Cohen were read aloud by Mrs. Rosen. Although we weren't 37 Brian Coergen Veronica Goetschius aware of it at the time, fifth grade, our last year in elementary school, was to be a memorable one. We tried to act mature, but . . . Mark Horowitz beat up Mike Levinson twice-a- day. In Mr. Kelly's class, llyce Weiss fainted at the 38 Steven Gottlieb JaneGuardia Marc Craubard sight of blood. She re- membered, however, that she was a lady, and she took off her glasses and pulled her dress down before she fell. Mitchell Craubard In Mr. Heigh's class, Scott Solomon had a crush on Debbie Stratton and Carol Litvack had a crush on Scott. Carol used psy- chology on Scot , telling Karen Cuarino Deborah Hamilton Cynthia Hall 39 Lindsay Hankins him that Debbie didn't like him and persuading him to like Carol. Then she asked him to go steady with her. In White Lake, Cheryl Holland and Debbie Hen- drickson had a fight over John Driscoll. Later that year, the two started a trend when they were caught smoking in the 40 Cheryl Holland Patricia Horace Mark Horowitz Savage Horace Maurice Horace Joyce Holland girl's room. Billy Quick threw a pencil at Mr. Diamond, missed him, and then locked himself in the closet for two hours. Meanwhile, in St. Peter's, Kellie Kroeger and Mary Ann Schoon- maker had a secret crush on Ramon Gonzalez, while Janice Giangrande was in Edward Houman 41 Gerald Jackson Theodore Howard love with Frank Collins. We left the fifth grade with fond memories of Mr Brooks, the librarian, recess, and having to eat everything on our plates. We entered the Middle School where we had to adjust to lockers, chang- ing classes, finding our rooms, and monitors that made you walk the steps Mark Jenkins Claire Jacobsen 42 |M ■ ■ Fred Jordan Robert Kapito Steven Kapito Betty Keil Stacey Kaye Kaitee Jung over. Sixth grade was the start of our social life. All the girls got training bras whether they needed them or not. Girls fought for the right to wear pants to school, and this brought on the bellbottom fad. We all started going to the school dances in the gym . . . but nobody danced. 43 a a eTTeT Joey Diaco put both ends of wire sunglasses into a socket and shorted out the whole classroom. Carol Litvack, Melodi Shapiro, Shelly Cohen, Norman Weiler, and Ira Cohen all played kissing games, such as Spin the Bottle. The girls made Norman wash his mouth out with Scope before he James Kinne John Klein Maryann Kiefer 44 Camera Shy Noreen Kneafsey could play. By the time we entered seventh grade, we were a little older but not much wiser. On Lorraine Wissman's first day in the Middle School (she came from Connecticut) she was very nervous. She asked the bus driver to pull over and let her off the bus. She got Camera Shy 45 Brian Latimer Patricia Latimer off and lost her breakfast all over Mike Feinstein's front lawn. Teddy Howard got locked in a locker by his so-called friends, while Miss Delena was in hys- terics looking for him. Everyone remembers Mrs. Racine ... if you told herthat you liked her dress, she'd wear it for Tammy Levine 46 Michael Levinson the next two weeks. Alan (“Chink ) Weis- brod moved to Monticello. He is now the class handicapper, making his home at the Monticello Raceway. Some of the boys from Wurtsboro told Mr.Lanuti that B.J Keil had died. Actually, she was absent from school with pneu- Camera Shy J udy Little Camera Shy Mitchell Livingston 47 Brian Longwell Debra Lorgan Kathleen Lowe Joseph Lutfey Stacey Martino James McBride Mary Ellen Lowndes monia. Mynde Rozbruch brought her lunch to school in a big shopping bag. Everyone was sur- prised to find it contained only a sandwich and an apple. Jill Lawler went steady with Steven Kapito for twenty-four hours. 48 Kenneth McBride In Miss Delena's seventh grade English class, Bruce Cersten played the Red Carrot in the movie of that name. Robert ( Sam ) Kapi- to's acting career began in this movie when he ran into the halls in polka-dot underpants. Things really started to happen in the Middle 49 Craig McNeil Clarese McVay School in the eighth grade. We were the seniors of the school, and we tried to prove it. It began when . . . Kevin Doty beat up a senior from the High School. Tom Rauch and Robert Zauner threw Miss Pessin's grade book out of Camera Shy Claude Misukiewicz Peggi Muller 50 Mario Munoz r the third floor window. We remember Mr. Be- ganny, the health teacher, because every time he talked about sex his face got red. One day he lit marijuana incense and half the eighth graders ran into the room. Scott Solomon showed how honorable'Tie was by 51 Cynthia Niven Mary Ann O'Neill J ace Oretsky returning a wallet he had found that contained $150.00. He returned it, much to the dismay of all the students and Mr. Lanuti. Lauren Gellman and Susan Bessell wrote dirty notes and put them in Mr. Lubin's suggestion box. They used to spy on him and watch his expression 52 Stephen Pasterchick Susan Pfeister Robert Price Veronica Quartaro William Quick Robert Petrus Norma Pittaluga when he opened the box and read the notes. Even though Mr. Heiser's math class was boring, Debbie Stratton would amuse us by push- ing up all the chairs in her row until they touched the blackboard. Mr Heiser was always amazed and never could figure out how they got there. 53 Kimberlee Ramsey The career of the great singing group, the M.I.G.'s (Mark Schiffrin, Ira Cohen, and Geoffrey Weiss) began in the eighth grade with their vocal renditions of Psychedelic Shack and Can't Get Next to You Fortunately, their careers also ended in the eighth grade. 54 James Rogan Debra Rosenberg Andrew Ross Fred Rolff Mynde Rozbruch Rachel Rosenberg Ken Somerville and Ramon Gonzalez gave Vance Levin a quarter to walk out on the ledge of the third floor windows. When he did, they locked him out and he was forced to get back in through Miss Turner's window. Kevin Doty put a tack on Miss Turner's chair. She sat on the seat and Arnold Rubin 55 Jody Rubin never felt a thing. Everyone was excited about going to the new high school. When we got there, we realized that we had to watch our step because once again we were the freshmen of the school. Jon Weiss bet Mrs. Kemp $5.00 that he could keep his mouth shut for Peter Schmick 56 Mary Ann Schoonmaker two weeks. Unbelievably, Jon won the bet, thus somewhat impoverishing his poor teacher. Then there was the time Steve Wagner broke a chair in the Library just by using it properly. In Miss Koktavy's gym class, Karen Cuarino threw the basketball into the other team's basket Howard Siegel 57 Karen Silverstein and scored the winning points for the opposition. Sharon Cerow and Barbara Keller had to wash all the desks in the typing room. Robert Ingram set fire to his sneaker with a bunsen burner on the day an inexperienced substi- tute was minding the class. Val Sorrentino 58 Jeffrey Stanley David Spiro Abraham Steier Camera Shy J udy Ann Steigler ra Steinberg Martin Steigler Kellie Kroeger stayed home from school for a few days because she was embarrassed that Ellen Schorr and Joey Diaco, at a party at Ellen's house, had walked into the bath- room by mistake while it was occupied by Kellie. By the time we reached the tenth grade we were used to the school and 59 James Steinberg were back to our old tricks. Carol Litvack didn't want to be late for Mr. Silverstrim's Biology class, so she came in through the window. She got caught, and the entire class suffered for it be- cause he kept the windows closed for the rest of the year. Robert Taggert 60 David Thompson Janice Ciangrade and Kaitee Jung conducted funeral services for all the animals that they dissec- ted in Biology Class. Steve Wagner was nick- named in Biology . . . LIPID. Mary Ann O'Neill, Faye Robinson, and Dolores Glenn called Mr. Graff up at 10:30 P.M. one night to ask how to spell 61 Elizabeth VanEtten Jeanne VanEtten supercalifragilisticexpial idocious. Mr. Noll's class was waiting for a Geometry test; forty-two minutes later, Mr. Noll walked into class, rubbing his eyes, saying that he had fallen asleep. Mr. Weinstein always used to sing to his class, Come on down to para- J ulie Wagner 62 Kirby Ward Robert Wasserlauf William Walker Steven Wallick Steven Wagner mecium town. All of Mr. Bradshaw's Public Speaking students were confused when he would tell the class never to stare at the wall or the ceiling and always look at the audience when giving a speech. While he was giving this advice, guess where he was staring?! Mrs. Burke's typing Scott Weglinski 63 Norman Weiler Rhonda Weissberg class will never forget the time she told them that she was giving them a practice final . . . they later found out it was “the real thing. Eleventh grade began and we were all relieved . . . we were one year closer to graduating. Every day in Mr. Good- stal's class, Ann Bryan Geoffrey Weiss Jon Weiss Carolyn Williams Eugene Williams David Wilson Kelly Young Lorraine Wissman Darlene Wilcox would start to hiccup. After six months of intense study in Mr. Jacob's Social Studies class, Diana Cahill finally remembered who the Vice-President was . . . “Henry Ford !?!? Peter Tufano and Mr. Rosengard used to have arguments about word definitions. Peter carried 65 Susan Applebaum his dictionary around, and was usually correct, much to the delight of his classmates. After Fred Jordan gave his explanation of the writ of HABEAS CORPUS , Mr. Jacobs proceeded to climb into the trash basket and do an exotic dance to the tune of his screaming and yelling. EAR GRAD ■■i Carol Breen 66 Carol Buchman LY UATE David Cohen Fred Coleman Malinda Charest Wayne Cox was left to die in a bathroom after five juniors tied him up with their belts. Then there was the day that Ellen Schorr walked out of Mr. William's English class because he refused to let her go to the bathroom. She threatened to bring her lawyer (Allen Froggy” Kesten) to J eanne Deschambeault 67 Karen Foldes Lori Goldman Mona Fradkin Kippi Greco Geraldine Dauch class.to get even with Mr. Williams. James Armstead locked his bike at the bike rack but accidently locked it to another bike. When he came back from a baseball game after school to get his bike at 6:00 P.M., David Spiro was waiting for him with fire in his eyes. 68 Terri Holotik Then there was Mr. Rudin's dancing History lectures . . . Mr. Pallaria's hickey Danny Meyer's race to glory at Holiday Mountain Miss Boyd's rush to emulate him . , And the most successful racer of all, our streaker Robert Kesten Terri Manzi 69 Ana Martinez Jose Pacheco Rono asnK i ■ Sandra McKenley Finally . . . Seniors! We remember Senior Lane, or Senior Cage, Mr. Peepers, the class trip. Senior picnics, and all the other memories from our last year in school. And as graduation approaches, we cannot help but feel a little sad at leaving Monti High and all its memories behind. 70 Emilio Raffo Clothilda Terry Victoria Vogt Sharon Walker Tanga Watkins Willie Mae Wallace Stephanie Weiss i ft if Page 73 Page 72 Kim Badendyck Julie Wagner A Ross B. Rapkin, R. Creen, D. Thompson, R. Blumenfeld, M. Forman. LT. GOVERNOR: David Thompson Is slavery dead? Key Club didn't think so when it offerred its members as slaves last November. Besides aiding school spirit, this traditional service organization contributed $100.00 to the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Key Club has donated its time and energy to such community projects as aiding UNICEF and the Heart Fund, visiting the people in various institutions, working at the polls on Election Day, helping a physically handi- capped child, and aiding Kiwanis with the distribution of turkeys during Thanksgiving. School service includes collecting college catalogues for the Guidance Dept., and distributing sports schedule cards. Not only is Key Club strong within our school, but Lt. Governor David Thompson has contributed to its power in the Key Club District. KEY CLUB MEMBERS: D. Spiro, H. Seigel, R Creen, J. Andow, Kapito, B Cersten, G Buchsbaum, K. Knopman, J Bergstrom, M. L. Interact's concentrated efforts are in the areas of school, community, and international understanding. Interact has collected for Sullivan County's Retarded Children, Community General Hospi- tal, and the Monticello Ambulance Corps. It serves the school by preparing a Freshmen club pamphlet, distributing flowers on Valentine's Day and Teacher Recognition Day, sponsoring dances, and helping with the Rotary Art Show. Interact's future -as a significant service organization looks bright. I 94 INTERACT BOARD: L. Deitsch, D. Meyer, L. Hankins, E. Feirman, K. Schaefer, K Silverstein, S Szabo, L. Monticello High School was privi- ledged to have three of its musical students chosen for Conference All-State. Cindy Macker and Judy Little, both sopranos, participated in the Chorus which was conducted by Dr. Richard Sheil, director of the Fredonia College Choir. Richard Kaiser displayed his percussion talents in the Wind Ensemble which was conducted by Dr. Harry Begian, Director of Bands at the University of Illinois. Judy, Cindy, and Richard spent four days rehearsing and performing at the Concord Hotel. Being picked for Conference All- State is an enormous distinction. Judy, a senior, and Cindy and Richard, both juniors, had to audi- tion the previous year at Competition before a special judge. All three received A ratings for their grade 6 performances, and were excellent enough to be recommended to attend Conference All-State. PIT BAND: L. Dummond, K. Silverstein, K. Culligan, J. VanEtten, M. Balensuela, I Pass, W. Houston, E. Fox, D. Wapnick, P. lannone, S. Rovitz, A. Steir, E. Rausch, M. Lubniewski, B. Schellhaas, D. Meyer, F. Armstrong, J. Newman, M. Schartz, P. Tutano, R. Kaiser, J. DiMarzio The Theatre Orchestra (commonly known as the Pit Band) was comprised of twenty-three students dedicated to the goal of sounding as professional as any Broadway group. Rehearsing as much as four hours at a time can be a very difficult task, as any brass player will tell you, but all the musicians (even Danny and Laurie) survived through the March 1st performance. By the time THE PAJAMA CAME had ended, all the musicians had the actors' lines memorized, and Matt and Danny made excellent prompters. The conclusion of the musical evoked mixed feelings—while those in- volved welcomed the free evenings, they knew the time had come to erase 100 pages of musical markings! CONFERENCE ALL-STATE: C. Coach Ken- nedy's boys then went on to defeat Burke in the O.C.L. Championship game 4—0 to bring the O.C.L. crown to Monticello High School. The Monties also advanced to the finals of class B play by defeating New Paltz and Washingtonville. Our post-season play was halted in the finals as we fell victim to a tough Alburtus Magnus team 1—0. The team was very young in age but by no rneans young in talent. This fact combined with the bril- liance of Coach Kennedy's coaching assures the Monties of another championship team in the seasons to follow. 128 129 VARSITY: FRONT: C. McCrea, C. Alii, J. This high school is no heaven, but it is not a hell. It is a simple and in most ways traditional academic environment. The impor- tant part of it, though, is the people that make it up. After a decade of internal strife, the youth of America are said to be sedate and apathetic. Pointing to our home for the last four years, they say, “What have students done to make their school better? For the most part, unfortunately, I would have to agree. For many students, school is a mandatory time consumer. Their thoughts focus on how to get out rather than how to make it liveable. This is not true for all students, though. There are a number of students that do have interests, and who care. Students here are involved in sports, in service, in student government, in debate, in the Monti Printz, and, of course, in the yearbook. These activities take up a great deal of time and effort. They are not without problems, although seemingly without reward. Individuals get involved, people act, and things do get done. The message is simple and, doubtless, you've heard it before. That does not detract from the truth that you get as much out of a thing as you put in it, and Monticello High School is no exception. Peter Tufano When this year began, everyone was busy and no one really knew what the yearbook was all about. But with the determination and hard work of everyone involved, especially the layout staff, we solved our problems and went on to produce a book we can all be proud of. I will never forget the layout staff's usual questions to me, Where's this, where's that? and the reply that I gave them, Ask Peter! Finally, after asking Peter, they came back and said, Peter said to ask you. My reply was always simple — Co ask Skalski. That pretty much sums it up, but I would really like to thank Mr. Skalski for helping us stay calm and cool, and for being there when we needed him. I forgive him for his corny ideas. I also want to thank Mr Rosengard for clearing up our Senior Class History and for being a true friend whom I will always admire for his shayner-punim. ( 'especially want to thank Peter for being a great and organized co-editor. To all who leave Monti High with me, I hope that this is only the end of the beginning and the opening of a great new future. Robert S. Kapito 150 ISI 152 CUSTODIAL STAFF: A.
