Foul- yeafs ago a group of boys and girls became the Freshmen of the Monticello High School. At last we had attained our goal, actually to belong to a high school and carry big and imI3F9SSiV9.100k1Ug b001FS- Life began to have for us a bigger meaning, a greater interest. How eager we were to show our school spirit, and with what great obedience did we observe every rule and regulation. How thrilled we were at every new student activity. With Helen Gager as our president, we took our place as the Class of 1930 and strove to perpetuate our name. A year had passed, and the members of the Class of '30, now full fledged Sophomores, began to take their places in the different school or- ganizations. The Dramatic Club, which had just been organized, included four Sophomores, and the Sophomore athletic teams were beginning to mean something to their opponents. We no longer thought of ourselves as being high school students in the abstract sense of the word, student life was becoming real and fascinating to us, with its many duties and pleasures. We still adhered faithfully to Student. Council regulations, try- ing to set an example to the Freshmen, for whom we were beginning to feel responsible, having steered our own way through the bewildering newness. September, 1928, and we were Juniors. Athlast we had reached the class of classes, for to every student the Junior year is the most ideal. The experience he has acquired in the past two years and the fact that he has but one more year to spend in the school make him anxious to cram the most into the third year. Consequently it is filled with the happiest memories. It is the richest of all the years. Having become Juniors, some of us were admitted as members of the Cold Quill, and the class was also represented in the High School Orchestra. It was in this year also that we recollect. the coming of Mr. Rutherford, our principal, and how we each promised to ourselves to help him bring glory to our school. And , all through the years, from class to class, we see the kind guiding hand of our beloved friend and advisor Mrs. Osborn, whom we shall never forget. IH April of this year, the Junior Prom was held. This dance, among the many others given, will be the most remembered by the school. The Q zsaoww Page twenty-eight 'Tifye Alpollogg gym had an air of formality and tradition such as it never had before. All that was fine and beautiful seemed to be evident that night. In June of this year eight of our classmates were chosen as members of the Monticello High School honorary society, the Searchlight Club. Time- flies. It seems as though We were just Freshmen and yet We have been attending school for quite some time under the awe inspiring title of Senior. Our classmates have filled the different positions that can be occupied only by Seniors, and are carrying on the standards of the school. Seven more of our classmates haveentered the Searchlight Club to help carry on the high aim of that society, which is to inspire students to greater efforts in all branches of study and curriculum. The Debating Club has been organized through the initiative of certain Seniors and Juniors. The Senior boys have at last attained what they have striven for these past three years, the Interclass Basketball Championship. Our president of the Student Organization will long be remembered for his everlasting smile and sunny good nature. With Beatrice'Sheiner, our class president, as our representativein the Student Council, We have brought about many improvements and innovated new ideas. As a lasting monument to our memory the Class of 1930 has had pub- lished this yearbook, dedicated to our beloved friend and advisor, Mrs. Annette F. Osborn. We were ushered in by Margaret Washington. We opened our programs and then saw a familiar face staring up' at us from an Arrow Collar advertisement. It was Raymond Jackson. The curtain went up first on a Ziegfeld chorus. There in the first row were Edith Raymond, Gladys Case, and Margaret McClernon. Among the male members of the cast were Philip Pollack, Nate Feinberg, and Fred Turner. Izzie Lashinsky was imitating Harry Langdon. We went back stage and saw Hobert Bates fixing the lights and pulling the curtain. On the stage we saw Rose Bochner playing her violin, accompanied by Dora Wishnefsky on the piano, and James Mitchell on the sax. By this time, it was no longer a surprise to see familiar faces and people filling their positions in life. Be it sufficient to say that during the performance we saw Dorothy Feder leading a 'boys' chorus, Dorothy Hertz and George Nemet doing esthetic dancing, and Dorothy Coddington together with Flor- ence Frankel doing a sister act. Among the celebrities present were: Art Smith, the mayor of Chicago, Philip Spinelli,,the .famous Army football star, Rose Epstein, the noted philanthropistg Dorothy Carpenter, the notorious corespondent of the Jackson.-Campbell divorce case at which Sam Nemet was judgeg Martha Nefsky, the famous poet, and Lillian Smith, the author of a book on philosophy. V After the show, we met Eleanor Maine and Marion Loderhose, who had become hostesses at Syracuse University, and a1so'Mary Conway and Harriet Gray who were operating an Old Maid's Home where Vincent Campbell was chief entertainer and where Ben Kaplan was janitor. They also informed me that Ben Seigel was their exclusive dentist and that Julia Cohen's sons conducted a checkroom there, the proceeds of which went to the Apology. . It behooves me to say that one and only one member of this honorable class, Joe Kutcher, suiered the disgrace of being committed to Sing Sing because of squeezing the buffaloes on nickels to a horrible death. -Staff. ll I ' U 'T all F Q W ADW WWI930 A Page tim ty one Q9 A ed eldo Will ll 935 I . 4 l . Moskowitz, the toughest man on the'Monticello squad came late for practice a few times. Finally Coach Sexton asked him what was the matter. Mosky replied that there was a meeting of the poetry club and that he had to be present. Whereupon came the famous reply, What are you anyway, a football man or a poet? In the Poughkeepsie game it was not true that luck is that which comes with work, for Monticello worked hard and the luck was with Poughkeepsie. They scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes of play. P Monticello journeyed to play the strong Spring Valley team. In the first quarter Monticello bucked Spring Valley's line for about six first downs but lost the ball on the twenty-yard line. In the second quarter Monticello made another half-dozen first downs only to lose the ball on the twenty-five yard line. In the third and fourth quarters, we made a number of first downs only to lose the ball near the goal. Q In the last quarter our old weakness in the passing game showed itself. Spring Valley scored two touchdowns, one on an intercepted heave, the other on a long pass. Monticello also took a close game from Matamoras, in basketball. Later in the season Monticello journeyed to Martamoras for a return game. I believe it was on this trip that Barney Frank went into a church and listened to a clergyman warn his congregation of the evils of strong drink. He ended with I hope the day will come when every bottle of bootleg liquor will be taken away and emptied into the nearest river. Now, what hymn shall we sing ? Here Barney replied, Let.'s sing hymn num- ber 13, 'Shall We Gather at the River 'Z' One of the most interesting and exciting games ever seen on a Mon- ticello court was played between Liberty and Monticello. The winning point was made in the last few seconds of play, final score 23-22, in favor of Liberty. V It was at this stage of the season that for the first time in many years the Monticello boys showed a lack of interest in their favorite sport of basketball. They lost a return game with Liberty, one each with Middle- town, Alumni and Matamoras. Then they beat a weak Tannersville team. The following week, with the arrival of a new coach, Mr. Somerville, known for his Heads up, now, C'mon, c'mon, let's look alive out theref' they beat Woodridge, then Saugerties, and later trounced Ellenville on their own court. New Platz Normal was also defeated twice. Page sixty LANDFIELD AVE. GARAGE . Storage Accessories Repairs l.l.. - I-Iupmobile Sales and Service Ralph S. Washington, Prop.
