In Memoriam MR. ROBERT ALLERTON 1873 - 1964 Mr. Robert Allerton began his education at Harvard School in Chicago. He then entered St. Paul's at Concord, New Hampshire. In Europe, Mr. Allerton broadened his education further by studying at the Royal Academy in Munich, German, and at the Academy Julien in Paris, France. In 1896, he took up residence on what is known as Allerton Park. Humility would be the key word to characterize Mr. Aller- ton. His broad mindedness, great spirit of honesty, and love of youth were also outstanding traits of his life, not to men- tion his great generosity. Art and education, were his main interests. It is said that art and landscape gardening were his life's work. Mr. Allerton's knowledge of art and landscape garden- ing are illustrated well by his park in Monticello. He loved nature and wanted its great beauty to be preserved so that it could be enjoyed by all. To Monticello, he has brought many objects of art which people from near and far come to admire. He has helped broaden Monticello's culture and appreciation of art and nature. He greatly favored the 4-H camp at Allerton Park for he stated Boys and girls from every section of the state will attend the camp. I hope they will find inspiration here and develop a keener apprecia- tion of culture and beauty. Education was of great concern to Mr. Allerton. In 1923, he was invited to serve on the University of Illinois Plan- ning Board and continued to be interested in its develop- ment. In 1926, he was the donor of traveling scholarships in American Architecture. These awards consist of a sum- mer's travel and study for two junior student architects who have the highest average in the University course in architectural history. This scholarship is still being given today. For senior architectural students he held an annual open house. Mr. Allerton placed his farms in capable hands so that they might be gradually developed into top-producing farms. His policy has been conservation of the soil for future gen- erations. An extensive amount of Piatt County property has been placed in the hands of the University of Illinois. He has contributed to its art collection and has provided fellow- ship funds. In 1944, he offered to the University a deed to his estate near Monticello for educational and research purposes. This land is used as a forest, a wild-life and plant life reserve, as an example of landscape architecture, and as a public park. Mr. Robert Allerton, philanthropist and scholar, has done much to promote education and art appreciation to the people of the Monticello area. We, the class of 1965, respectfully dedicate this annual to the memory of Mr. Robert Allerton in appreciation of his concern for beauty and for people.
