Later in the evening the festivities were climaxed by the corona- tion of the Homecoming Queen of 1956-Senior Judy O'Dell. Thus ended the 'Homecoming for 1956. But what of the other Home- comings of the past? Were they as successful? When was the first one held? Old newspapers and annuals reveal how Homecoming was origi- nated and how it .became such a festive event of each year. In 1923 the senior class held the first Homecoming,or the forerunner of our Homecoming of today. It carried out the circus theme and was called The Senior Circus . The seniors made it seem quite realistic and true to circus life with side shows, a big top, and a huge animal parade. This Circus was an annual event until the first actual Homecoming made its debut in 1932. Except for a few changes through the years this first Homecoming was celebrated in the same manner as it is today. Q. , !v In 1936 the Parent-Teacher Association took over the serving of the ' supper and has continued this practice annually. The election of a Homecoming Queen actually got under way in 1937 and in 1941 a Student Council, who planned the Homecoming ac- tivities, was organized. This group has carried on the tradition of Home- coming since then. Homecoming is indeed an annual event an may it continue success- T fully for many more years, remaining as traditional as it is today. gf' What is a Homecoming parade without appreciative spectators? .vi And we won the game! Compliments of GENERAL CABLE CORPORATION DEDICATED FRIEND On January 3, 1924, twenty-three years ago, Ernie Sum- mers came to work at Monticello High School. Although his duties placed him as custodian of the gym, his work was no- ticed and felt throughout the entire school. He was something special to faculty and students alike. Ernie did more than janitorial work: he built bookcases, took the responsibility of preparing the refreshment stands for the ballgames and many other things, doing some of them without pay. Sometimes words fail to express gratitude and apprecia- tion as one would like to express it, 'but to a friend who has served for so long and was more than just a janitor, the An- nual Staff takes great pleasure in dedicating this page to Ernie Summers. .3 f5!v rx Compliments of DR. and MRS.
