Later in the football season the Council sponsored a Dad's Night for the dads of the players and cheer- leaders. A similar honor was given to the mothers at a basketball game. Two members of the Student Council were sent to the Student Co u ncil Convention which was held in Peoria. Several special assembly programs were sponsored by this group of student leaders. The after school activities consisted of speedball, archery, swimming, basketball, volleyball, and softball. The GAA under the direction of Miss Gwen Elder adviser held an annual fall play day in the m with ten , , , SY surrounding schools participating. The membership drive was a successful event for seventy-two girls joined the organization this year. The Freshmen had the most girls joining, so a slumber party and weiner roast were given in their honor. Although, we regret to state that fifteen girls were dropped from the organization because they did not attend enough after-school meetings. Other events of the GAA were formal and informal initiation and several coke dances held after the football and basketball games. One of the exclusive coke dance's was the Sweetheart Shuffle. The big annual event of the GAA was the Spring Reversal Dance which was held in the high school auditorium. FUTURE I-ICDMEMAKERS GF AMERICA The Monticello Chapter of Future Homemakers of America was organized early in the year with J o y c e Beckhart presiding and Mrs. Maxine Schroth, the home economics teacher, as adviser. By the time of informal initiation in October, 78 girls had paid their dues and were members. To be eligible for membership the girl must have had at least one year of home economics. On October 5 the officers, adviser, and chapter mo ther went to Champaign Junior High School for the annual House of Delegates meeting for Section 16. Ways to improve FHA and projects were discussed by groups. On the night before informal initiation the girls invited their mothers to a potluck for the purpose of the mothers getting acquainted. The initiation was held the next day at school and the initiates and Mrs. Schroth were required to wear odd combinations of clothing. In the spring several members of the chapter attended the Spring Rally. This is a meeting where all of the chapters give reports on what their chapter has done for the past year and suggestions are given on how it could be improved. Formal initiation and election of the following year's officers are also done in the spring along with the annual FHA style show. The girls make their garments as well as model them. The FHA girls and their mothers had a potluck supper in the cafe- teria this fall in order to become better acquainted. For an informal initiation into FHA these initiates and Mrs. Maxine Schroth, Csecond from the right? FHA adviser for her first year, had to dress in these unusual costumes -for a day. as y. Armed with such powerful tools, these boys continuously strive to learn new farming programs and better ways to serve their community. Early in the year the members of the FFA laid out a broad program including judging and exhibiting livestock and grain, taking the annual trip to Chicago to the International Expositiong collecting for the March of Dimes, buying, repairing, and selling farm machineryg making and selling hog troughs and many other projects. There is always time for fun. Early in the fall the old members look forward to initiating the Green- hands into FFA. This is done with great ceremony, the old members thinking of the time they were initiated, the new members thinking of the time when they will be doing the initiating. The organization has its annual party usually held in the gym, This clu-b is known for sponsoring the annual donkey basketball game. Future Business Leaders CDF America The Future Business Leaders of America is the organization of the Monticello High School commercial students. The project of this organization is the publication of the school newspaper, SAGE TALK. Doris Haneline was the editor of the paper this year and Mrs. Gertrude Clapper was the sponsor and newspaper ad- viser. SAGE TALK is sent to all the veterans who graduated from MHS, and to many of the surrounding schools. This is the seventh year of publication. First on the agenda of FBLA highlights was the preparation of the FBLA float which won first prize in the organizations' division of floats in the Homecoming parade. Next was the traditional initiation of the new members which was an informal initiation party held November 9. The officers, one state officer, and Mrs. Clapper attended the Illinois State FBLA convention in Springfield, FBLA sponsored one coke dance and the coke stand at several of the MHS basketball games. In addition to publishing the SAGE TALK, the club completed several projects relating to business education. To wind up the year's activities, the first year mem- bers gave an FBLA party for the organization in the spring. SAGE TALK MEMBERS: CFront row, left to right! Many of the publication problems that have arisen in the past years were discussed and several solutions reached. Each member of the Staff was responsible for a certain amount of copy which had a definie deadline. A group of copy and layouts were then turned over to the printer at different intervals which gave him a more organized schedule. The Staff decided that this year's MEMORIES would be financed entirely by subscriptions, sponsorships and patrons. This meant that each member had to really work on his salesmanship because twice as many sponsorships were needed. The sponsorship drive was held from December 3-15, Orders for the 1954-55 yearbook were taken in January. This year's cover was designed by Fred Dresback, winner of the competitive cover design competition held in the art classes.
