I7 'Et i 91 STUDENT COUNCIL They Wear The Pants In Our Family lt is a great honor to be chosen by your class- mates to represent them on the Student Council, Our Student Council consists of all the class officers plus a boy and girl chosen from each class to act as class representatives. They got busy at the beginning of the year and elected Owen An- derson, an efficient senior, as their President, Pat Trimble, a junior, as Vice President, Joanne Mar- tin, a junior as Secretary, and Loretta Ludwick, a senior, as Treasurer. On October 20, with the help of their two de- pendable advisors, Mr, Felts and Mr. Paoli, they sponsored the Annual Homecoming - bonfire, movie, parade, and dance. With the help and co- operation of all concerned, it proved to be very successful and provided working capital for the year. During football season, the dads of the play- ers were honored at our Annual Dads' Night. Then the mothers of the players were honored in the same way during basketball season. Once a month throughout the year, Student Council presented il movie or an assembly program to the students. They also planned very good Thanksgiving and Christmas programs. On November 4, eight members, Owen An- derson Pat Trimble, Joanne Martin, Loretta Lud- wick, Jodie Davidson, Helen Morfey, Chick Barnes, an-fl Margaret Cook journeyed to Urbana, Illinois, to attend the annual District Student Council Con- vention. lt was held at the Urbana High School. First, there was a general session and then different members attended such group discussions as, How may a Student Council finance its activities, What is school soirit and how may it be im- proved, How may Student Councils train suc- cessful leaflers anfl Should there be standards of membership onthe Student Co'incil a The theme of the convention was Responsibilities and Priv- ileges of a Democratic Student Council . Congratulations Student Council members for a job well done. We played football, but they played better. The score was 38 to l3 in favor of Normal. Villa Grove came to visit us for our first con- ference game. Manuel scored to start the rally in which we came out on the long end of the score, l3 to O. The Sages then traveled to Farmer City to lose a heartbreaker, Pike, Williams, and Manuel were our main keys, but somehow the score was l3 to l2, Farmer City's favor. Tuscola came to Monticello for our second conference game. They left us battered and bruised and with a score reading 39 to l3 in their favor. We then traveled to LeRoy for an exciting game. The score was O to O all the way until the last three minutes of play. Wayne Meece threw a pass to Owen Anderson who went over the goal line for our one and only touchdown, The final score was 6 to O in our favor. Telling the boys what's what. What price proficiency? On October 20 we celebrated our Homecom- ing. Bob Manuel showed Cerro Gordo how to play football and sparked our team to victory. The final score, one which made our Homecoming per- fect, was l4 to 7. We challenged Arthur on October 27. Our team had shown improvement. The whole team contributed to our win. The score was 39 to l2 in our favor. On November 3 we traveled to Newman. We hated to leave a sad crowd, as it was Homecoming, but it furthered our chances of a possible tie in the Okaw. We won 27 to 6. As the story ends, as of years past, we played Bement on Armistice Day. On a cold Friday night, the night before Armistice Day this year, we jour- neyed to Bement. It was our last chance to grab a piece of that Okaw Valley championship. We met a good team, but our spirit was never downed and we won 25 to 7. We shared our Okaw Valley championship with two other great teams, Arcola and Tuscola. As we close our album on another fine year of football, we say again, Congratulations, Sagesl Dig! One of the oldest of these is that public relations group which each year tries to issue a publication which reflects the ac- tivities of all groups and indicates the progress and tempo of our school life. This journalistic effort, Mem- ories, is under the direct supervision of editor, Jane Summers, and assistant editor, Beverly Shinneman, who in turn direct the work of the Senior Staff consisting of one person for each phase of work. Senior staff members in turn have committees working under them. The early part of the year was directed chiefly at money making activities for the group Dinners were Cooking, Selling Fruitcakes, Typing, Wracking Our Brains, Dipping lce Cream, Checking Coats-All for the Cause- --- Annual Staff served to the Community Club, County Teachers Meet- ing, Chamber of Commerce, Delta Kappa Gamma for- mal initiation, Syrup of Pepsin Christmas party, the 4-H Recognition group, the Business and Professional Women's Club and their employers. Stands and check rooms added to the funds and the merchants in Monti- cello and surrounding towns sponsor pages, which adds materially to our income. This is the second year we have used a process of reproduction which does not limit the number of pic- tures so we hope our public is pleased to be able to see as well as hear about our high school family life. They also serve the com- munity club meetings and other organizations as well as our own extra-curricular activities. This group helps us hear as well as see football games and basketball games. They also help us make our coke dances and other activities a success. There is a file of catalogues and film advertise- s. Don P nces, At Games, At Movies. While most of the films have been shown in the science lecture room, we hope it will be possible to equip the class rooms and select two students from each class who will be able to operate the equipment. Most of the equipment is kept in the motion pic- ture booth, carefully labeled and arranged conveniently in cabinets. This is the third year for F.B.L.A. in Monticello High School. To be a member of F.B.L.A., you have to be taking at least one commercial subject. This year there were forty commercial stu- dents who joined F.B.L.A. Some of the activities of the year were: an initiation which was held in the library, a float in the Homecoming parade, attendance of the state meeting by all offi- cers, a lunch stand at a football game and one at a basketball game, and a dinner for the members of the club. The club has also carried on for the third year its main project which was publishing a weekly school paper called Sage Talk. The officers were: President, Betty Zindars, Vice-Presi- dent, Marilyn Noecker, Secretary, Carol Mills: Treas- urer lalways selected from the Freshman classl, Helen Harper, Parliamentarian, Carolyn Campbell, Historian, Juanita Hilgendorf, and Reporter, Vicki Waller. The date determined for the meetings was the second Tues- day of every six weeks. As their first social activity, the F.H.A. girls had a slumber party in October, held in the High School. Judging by the noise and the laughter that was made, the 42 girls who attended enjoyed themselves extremely well. The girls decided upon three ways for making money: selling jello, managing a stand at one coke dance, and selling magazines. They showed good cooperation in all three. Early in November a group represented Monticello High School at the House of Delegates meeting at Ma- homet. The girls who represented Monticello were: Evadne Day, acting as a member of the Nominating Com- mittee: Annabelle Alexander, acting as the voting dele- gate, Marilyn Noecker who retired as section l6's recre- ation chairman: and Victoria Waller who 'vas elected l95l section treasurer. The girls served the F.F.A. Father-Son Banquet on February 20. The F.H.A. were guests of the F.F.A. at the Christmas party and dance. The F.H.A. gave a party for the boys on March 9. The section F.H.A. Rally, held at Fisher on March 3, was attended by approxi- mately 20 girls from Monticello. On Honors Day Marilyn Noecker was given the Homemaking Medal, and twenty-five girls were given pins symbolic of their excellence in homemaking. MILT PADGETT uperstition Stomp Friday night, April 13, 1951, the G.A.A. sponsored its annual dance, the Spring Re- versal. A superstition theme was used to dec- orate the auditorium because of the date's being Friday the 13th, and it was called Su- perstition Stomp. lt began at 9 p.m., and dancing to the music of Ted Mikita and the Tophatters lasted till midnight. Ten Cents Worth of Future An extra feature was the fortune-tell- ing booth, which proved quite a novelty. Refreshments of pie, cake, cookies, sand- wiches, and cokes were sold at a stand at the back of the auditorium. This is a Lovely Way to Spend an Evening The auditorium was decor- ated with black cats, four-leaf clovers, horseshoes, falling stars, and unlucky numbers such as 13 and 7 . A step- ladder was placed at the door so that everyone had to walk under it to enter the audito- rium. Everyone had a very nice time at this year's Reversal, and Miss Elder, who was in charge of the dance, is to be congratulated for her fine work. ..-I The Best in Motion Picture Entertainment LYRIC THEATRE Club '5l Friday night, May I8, 'l95l, the Juniors entertained the Seniors, faculty, and board royally at Club '5l at the annual Junior-Senior Prom. Those present danced and danced to the heavenly music of Bud Roderick and his orchestra, with our own Mr. Keutemeyer at the piano. Pass the Biscuits, Mirandy Upon entering the Club, we saw wait- ers and waitresses dressed in black and white: and they had all the details of Club '5l costumes, including white gloves for the girls, black bow ties for the girls and boys, and white napkins over the s arms of the boys, The decorations also if tsts carried out the black and white theme. A fountain with gold fish and bubbling 'if water was the center of attraction. One 'wth of the most clever ideas for this Prom was the programs. They were in the form 1 of a checkbook with the first page made out in check form from the Juniors to the Seniors for Sl9.5l. The other paces had the menu, the proqram, and the list of Juniors, Seniors, Faculty, and Board. Atmosphere Plus Fine Food After a wonderful dinner Fred Williams took over as Master of Ceremonies. Gypsy Bennett from the Junior Class welcomed the Seniors, and Ber- nadette Tracy from the Senior class thanked the Juniors. Mr. Schneider then talked briefly to the group. Helen Morfey, a Freshman, furnished very en- joyable entertainment with her singing. Then came th e awaited-for fun. Wayne Meece, Junior, and Owen Anderson, Senior, presented the Hatchet Oration, and everyone, even those who were victims of the fun, agreed that it was very good. ln fact, the whole Prorn was one of the best ever to be held at Monticello High School.
