Up from the smoldering ashes From the ted-gold flames In the spiraling smoke Curled the beginning of a dream . . . After the fire of 1888. In November, 1888, fire destroyed all of Monticello save a pile of ruins. Her campus was bare, all record of her existence was de- stroyed.
