BENJAMIN GODFREY Monticello College, founded in 1835 as Monticello Female Seminary, is one of the oldest institutions for the higher education of women in the United States. It was founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey, a retired sea captain, born in Chatham, Massachusetts in 1794- Godfrey had eight daughters for whom he wished the kind of educa- tion which would make them better wives and mothers. His belief was that ccif you educate a man you educate an individual; if you educate a woman you educate a family? With the help of Reverend Theron Bald- win, Godfreyts dream became a reality and Monticello opened FOr classes on April 11, 1838. sad 0 - T$t- . 9' .'.l ..,m-- WLm
