The BLACK AND GOLD DINNER which preceeded Recognition had its origin almost :1 generation ago to combat the girls homesickness. During the first weeks of. school, the dinners were fancy occasions and helped build enthusiasm and promote unity among the students. The name of the dinner, Black and Gold, came from MonticelloTS colors e black as the ashes of mourning for the ruins after the fire, and gold toriginally yellowT symbolizing growth and faith in Monti- cello. The RECOGNITION SERVICE originated from the c'calling out ceremony. At this time, when womens education was new and there were no placement exams, the students had :1 personal interview at tea and their progress in school was announced. Over the years, and through better educational developments, the initial reason for calling out was lost, This ceremony was replaced by one formal recognition service held the day following the George Washington Banquet, As time passed, Recognition Service has been Changed to early fall.
