It was founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey, a retired sea captain, born in Chatham, Massachusetts in 1794- Godfrey had eight daughters for whom he wished the kind of educa- tion which would make them better wives and mothers. His belief was that ccif you educate a man you educate an individual; if you educate a woman you educate a family? With the help of Reverend Theron Bald- win, Godfreyts dream became a reality and Monticello opened FOr classes on April 11, 1838. sad 0 - T$t- . 9' .'.l ..,m-- WLm Up from the smoldering ashes From the ted-gold flames In the spiraling smoke Curled the beginning of a dream . . . For a brief moment only did Harriet Newell Haskell, Principal of Monticello, give way to grief. Then - standing in the midst of a silent group - she said, It will be rebuilt. Our friends are legion? Due to her determined courage and inspiring leadership, just one year later the new Monticello was dedicated. ' A...- u w '3; '. Hyiai . 7' 4A .3. This ceremony marks the end of orientation, the recognition of the Student body :15 :1 whole, and the welcoming of :111 by the entire faculty in academic regalin. Following this yenrk Convocation. President and Mrs. Myers held an informal reception at The Ever- greens, inviting the Students to tour the Presidentk home, and chat with the faculty over punch and cookies, on the torCh-lit lawn. H President Myers addresses student body. The BLACK AND GOLD DINNER which preceeded Recognition had its origin almost :1 generation ago to combat the girls homesickness. During the first weeks of. school, the dinners were fancy occasions and helped build enthusiasm and promote unity among the students. The name of the dinner, Black and Gold, came from MonticelloTS colors e black as the ashes of mourning for the ruins after the fire, and gold toriginally yellowT symbolizing growth and faith in Monti- cello. The RECOGNITION SERVICE originated from the c'calling out ceremony. At this time, when womens education was new and there were no placement exams, the students had :1 personal interview at tea and their progress in school was announced. Over the years, and through better educational developments, the initial reason for calling out was lost, This ceremony was replaced by one formal recognition service held the day following the George Washington Banquet, As time passed, Recognition Service has been Changed to early fall. Orientation 22 t. '.' .-' - e211; m... ...I H ' W 'w-gco w Faculty-Student Picnic Orientation first began more as a sorority-type initiation. Eleven senior girls, known as the Heavenly Eleven, were chosen to plan the aetivities. During the orientation period you could find a Freshman rolling an egg down the hall with her nose, or scrubbing Senior Stairs with a t00thbrush. Orientation laSted from early fall until Recognition Service in the spring. Several years ago the Orientation program was changed to the type of program now held. Lets get togethetii rang through the halls this fall as the Seniors busily prepared for the new Freshman Students. Each Freshman on her arrival was greeted by her Big Sister and was presented with a black and gold beanie. Activities included a faculty-student picnic supper, campus tours, a shopping trip, a Freshman-Senior sing and the All States Dinner. The week concluded with the Opening Convocation and a faculty reception at The Evergreens. 24 Dach Weekend Registration Moms are pretty important President Myers chats with parents Faculfy-Parcnt Coffee h-Q- F! This event began under the direCtion of Miss Harriet Haskell in De- cember 1897. In response to her interest expressed for :1 Chicago settle- ment program near the Stockyards, Monticello students colleCted funds from their allowances to provide a Monticello graduate as a resident of the settlement. At the Christmas season the Students purchased and dressed dolls which they sent to'the Children of the Chicago area settle- ment. To express her appreciation to the girls, Miss Haskell surprised them with a special luncheon - the Doll Luncheon. From this has come the D011 Dinner, which has now increased its program and ac- tivities. At present, dolls donated by Students and alumnae are pre- sented to several Alton area organizations, to be distributed to needy children as Christmas gifts. This year the dinner had as its theme A Monticello Christmas to Remember? in honor of that fir5t Doll Luncheon. The dinner was ded- icated to the Spirit of Monticello and all those who are and have been part of her tradition. Slave Day On january 16, Monticello Students had the chance to owrf members of the faculty. This event c Faculty Slave Day which the Choir sponsored, in Order to raise money for their tour in the spring. Some tasks faculty members were icorderedii to do were cleaning, washing, repair jobs, bOOt polishing, showing their skills in th' culinary department, and running errands for their owners-for-the-day. Besides everyone having a good time, an informal basis for communication between faculty and students was achieved. 211116 21bOth through thC Mali 5aw.. w K ; - -. n i ., u - i . This year the George Washington Ball marked its seventy-second anniversary. This annual event was held February 20 at the Bel Air East Hotel in St. Louis, with the Freshman Class pre- senting Never Say Goodbye, Say Until Later? The GWB, as it is known by students and alumni, evolved from a reception held in February, 1899, by Harriet Haskell, principal of what was then Monticello Female Seminary, in commemo- ration of the 100th anniversary of Washingtonis death. The first celebration was held in the library. Miss Haskell entered the room dressed as George Washington, with the President of the Senior Class dressed as Martha. The event was a success, and consequently became a tradition. The GWB has been celebrated many ways since 1899. In 1907, the event took the form of a banquet where the freshman class chose their officers, colors, hymn, flower and m0tto. Ten years later the program again was slightly changed, with all seniors dressing as George and Martha for the dinner. The classes presented toasts, sang songs, and threw slams at each Other in fun. In the 19405 the dancing of the minuet was added, performed by members of the freshman class preced- ing the banquet and formal ball. Even though the celebration has varied over the years and has become very social, the same tra- ditional spirit has prevailed since the time of Harriet Haskell, seventy two years ago. Dignity is always reflected in the recog- nition of the fitness of things and in the poise and self-confidence with which one places oneis self above that which might be considered un- seemly. BEAUTY. Within each girl is the power to recognize and appreciate the beauty of everyday experiences. Life is filled with beauty if one is sen- sitive to it and eager to find it . . . if oneis eyes are trained to see, oneis ears to hear, oneis heart to understand, and ones mind to remember. LOYALTY. One of the most important of the Monticello ideals is a deep-seated loyalty to the College, oneis friends, oneis family, and ones own beliefs. This deep emotion will grow through understanding, re- spect and love. WISDOM. As the Monticello girl grows in academic stature, she seeks to increase her ability to apply her knowledge usefully, for wisdom is the union of knowledge and understanding. SERVICE. Each one of us has a distinctive personality and unique tal- ents. The Monticello girl considers it nOt only a privilege but a responsi- bility to share her gifts with all, thereby helping herself and others to de- velop to the fullest measure. DEMOCRACY. The truly democratic person interests herself in the activities of others. She seeks to understand and respect the ideals and be- liefs of her associates, while maintaining her own independence of thought and action. FRIENDSHIP. Many of your most cherished and lasting friendships will be made while you are at Monticello. Your college days will afford rich opportunities for making a wide circle of friends. In true friendship there is dignity, beauty, loyalty, service, and never-failing consideration. 42 , ., --...- m . . x3 1 u 7 ?J- y an- '1 s I 'f . h 3 . s O Rh 9 O f O ; I. - , P .. f' Stephanie Celento 43 Anne Claim '-vm-' ' ' '- .. -...- .5. W The Spanish and German Clubs had their origins in 1937, when the Foreign Language Club was or- ganized for the purpose of. presenting projeCts of. special intereSt to language students. Its first presen- tation was a Christmas dinner and entertainment in which the dining room tables were decorated in keeping with the French, Spanish, German and Eng- lish Christmas spirit. After dinner, Christmas carols were sung and skits were Performed showing Christmas traditions in Other lands. In the spring the Club sponsored var- ious meetings in which foreign movies were shown and guest lectures were given. There was no closed membership in the clubs first year, but it was hoped to have membership limited to those whose lan- guage academic work was above average. During the 19403, foreign languages and the for- eign language club were offered, although very few Students participated in anything having to do with foreign language. It was not until 1953 that the Lan- guage Club subdivided into separate groups. At that time the French Club and the Spanish Club were created. CuStoms and cultures of the two countries were studied. In the 1960s the German Club was organized. Each year the foreign language clubs hold a banquet, serving foods native to each country. Los Amigos Front Row. left to right: S. Stuart, R. Topolosky, R. I can never be satisfied Because there is always more To be, to do, to attain. Whatever I have done I could have done better. Whatever I have been, I could be more. Whatever I have attained 15 so much less than I should have attained. With some I succeed, But until I succeed with all, Until I have given away all that I can give, Until I have brought every Student To the point at which she knows all I know And then is famished because she realizes How little that is, in the vaSt realm of things to learn, Until each of my Students has surpassed me And added something to the world, Not until then am I a success. So you see - I cannOt take anything, For nOthing is mine to take. But it is yours to give . . . And you have . . . And I thank you. MR. G. BURTON HARBISON INSTRUCTOR. MUSIC MRS.
