Dignity is always reflected in the recognition of the fitness of things and in the poise and self-confidence with which one places one's self above that which might be considered unseemly. 57 Beauty Barbro Norrback Within each girl is the power to recognize and appreciate the beauty of everyday experiences. Life is filled with beauty if one is sensitive to it and eager to find it ... if one's eyes are trained to see, one's ears to hear, one's heart to understand and one's mind to remember. Loyalty Cynthia Smoots One of the most important of the Monticello ideals is a deep-seated loyalty to the college, one's friends, one's family, and one's own beliefs. This deep emotion will grow through understanding, respect, and love. 59 Wisdom ability to apply her knowledge A , Cathy Walters As the Montice lo girl grows in academic stature, she seeks 1 usetully. for wisdom is the union of knowledge with understandi she seeks to increase ling. Service Beverly Schultz Each one of us has a distinctive personality and unique talents. The Monticello girl considers it not only a privilege but a responsibility to share her gifts with all, thereby helping herself and others to develop to the fullest measure. 61 Democracy Suanne Jackson The truly democratic person interests herself in the activities of others. She seeks to understand and respect the ideals and beliefs of her associates while maintaining her own independence of thought and action. Friendship Moily Fearheilly Many of your most cherished and lasting friendships will be made while you are at Monticello. Your college days will afford rich opportunities for making a wide circle of friends. In true friendship there is dignity. beauty, loyalty, service, and never failing consideration. 63 Who's Who in American Junior Colleges Grotchen Dinges, Cindy Smoots, Cathy Walters, Nancy May, Lisa Mabry, Beverly Schultz, Sue Williams (Missing from picture—Suanne Jackson) Selection for listing in WHO’S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN JUNIOR COLLEGES is an honor conferred annually upon outstanding student leaders from approximately 600 junior colleges in the United States. In selecting candidates, the student body is instructed to choose those students whose academic standing, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities, and future potential are decidedly above average. 64 Terry Abrams Orchard Lake, Michigan. Hitt. Assistant Secretary in the Department Health. Education and Welfare, delivers the commence-ment oddress. Dr. Myers presents Mrs. Hitt with a Distinguished Service Award. Liz Perry Memorial — Senior Recognition Award This award was made at Commencement with the following statement by Dr. Myers: Missing from this year's graduating class is a young woman whose life was snuffed out last spring by a brutal murder in New Jersey. Elizabeth Perry had just finished her freshman year a few days before the tragedy. Mr. and Mrs. Perry this past year met with Dean Shewman and asked that an award be made in memory of Liz—an award to a member of this graduating class. A committee of students worked with Dean Shewman to determine the nature of the award and the criteria for so honoring a member of this class. Their feelings were that Liz was characterized by her hard work for others without any thought to glory or reward. Thus was born the SENIOR RECOGNITION AWARD—the LIZ PERRY MEMORIAL—a recognition to the senior student who has given her time and talents to the college community without great fanfare of recognition. From the list of nominations, terv were chosen and a final selection was made by a student-faculty-administrative joint committee. I'm pleased to present the medallion representing this Liz Perry Memorial—Senior Recognition Award to Kathy Atwood. 202 Kathy Atwood ( Monticello o Musical Musicals presented in 1969: The Fantasticks Once Upon a Mattress Oliver The 1969 Monticello Musical Thcafro Compony 205 Index SENIORS Abrams.
