LOVE OF BOOKS ANI) OUR FELLOWMAN Russell 1 . Shar|ie, the eighth President of Monticello, is no longer a new lace, hut an old friend to many of the students and faculty. A native ot hast (irecnwich, Rhode Island, Mr. Sharpe graduated from Harvard, where lie majored in English, in 1928. I«ater, after a year of European travel, lie returned to Harvard in an administrative capacity until he was called into military service. He was promoted to the rank of colonel and awarded the Legion of Merit in 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe came to Monticello from San Francisco, California, where he was Administrative Vice-President of (iolden Gate College. Russell T. The time and energy of this eflicient group are freely given every year toward the handling of finances and the supervision of many college matters. A., Columbia University The position of Academic Dean encompasses many responsibilities most of wbiclt are directly concerned with tbe students and their problems. In this capacity. Miss Swift is a willing listener and a helpful adviser. She supervises tbe curriculum and examinations and acts as chairman of the Advising Committee. Despite her busy schedule. She keeps academic and registration records for each student, records grades, prepares transcripts, anil aids those planning to transfer to senior colleges. Dances, teas, cabin parties, movies, ami trips to St. I.ouis arc scheduled under her guidance. In addition to these activities, Mrs. Durcc serves as adviser to the junior class and social committee chairmen. Mrs. W. Vladimir Roi sskff Librarian Mrs. Rousscff, as head of the library staff, has the time-consuming responsibility of maintaining order on the library shelves and quiet at the library tables. She is always available for aid in finding reference material in liooks as well as in the complete collection ol periodicals, pamphlets, and other current reading material. Mrs. Virginia B. During the year Hobby Horse participates in such activities as the overnight field trip to places in order to sec outstanding stables and horses, going to some of the horse shows in St. Louis; and seeing movies shown in the club meetings. Hobby Horse produces the horse show in the spring.
