Stiver Not shown, Bob Downing The 1950-S1 football squad of Montgomery Township High School reported for practice at McCarthy Field two weeks before the school term began. After two weeks of strenuous calisthenics and practice, Coach McElhoes had little trouble in selecting a starting lineup, which included nine lettermen. The first game of the year was played with Snowshoe on their field. The season starter favor- ably with the Panthers winning that game, 14-0. The next game was with Black Lick on our own new McCarthy Field. It was at this game, which ended in a deadlock, 0-0, that Mr. McCarthy pre- sented the school with the field. A week later, again on our gridiron, another game was tied, 7-7, this time with the Commodore Bulldogs. On the Blairsville home field, the Panthers whipped the Bobcats, 27-12, to start us on a last- ing winning streak. Again we won, in a hard played game against the Stoystown eleven. At the end of this game, the Panthers were on the upper end of a 20-0 score. The next week, New Florence came to Arcadia to be held scoreless, 1-1-0, by our still undefeated Panthers. This year several of our boys achieved great honors in the football world. Phil Trimble was chosen Mort Ozftilanding Playef' for his defense work in the Stoystown game. Stanley Grifiith was the first boy from Montgomery Township to make All-County Guard. Being a member of the County All-Stars is an honor given to eleven men in Indiana county. Honorable mention was given to Howard Foster, and Phil Trimble. Bob Downing was chosen as the fullback on the second team. We realize that it is only through the cooperation of all the boys that any team can have a winning season. M.T.H.S. will hate to lose these lettermen who will graduate in 1951: Dan Kantz, Bob Stiver, Ed Deyarmin, Albert Rairigh, Bob Downing, Stanley Griffith, Bake Foster, Phil Trimble and Stanley Dudek. We offer our sincere praise, on behalf of the whole school and community, to all the men who played for Montgomery Township under the ex- cellent supervision of Coach Bud McElhoes. May the future Panthers continue in this path of success initiated by the team of 1950-Sl! THE 1951 BEACON ---- 16
