Just as flowers spring and grow, experience, and so have the years of the and gone, The change of each flower has seeds which we had In our Freshman Year we planted the secured during our first eight years. As' nothing daunted these we could see noteworthy aspirations, and we took our place in every activity. Perhaps the most outstanding of the events of the year was the Freshman initiations and as Then came our Sophomore Year and immediately we foresaw the the e seeds that was characteristic, the capacity to grow. need of supplying these seeds with the necessities of life. All through the year we worked hard setting our goal to be obtained in the future. We took part in the nOne Act Playn to adjust ourselves to the level attained in other schools. With pride we look back to the time we served our upper classmates at the Junior-Senior Banquet. , In our Junior Year we found the class becoming more'and more organizvg ., officers elected, class colors chosen, a definite amount of dues being paid by each individual. Some of the individuals were outstanding in sports, others in music, while our pride in dramatics lay in our Junior Play , UAmy from Arizena'. At the end of the year the annual means of honoring the seniors with a banquet was carried out. In our Senior Year, football, track, and basketball, and music found stars in our midst. We excelled in musical talent by having a boys and girls Quartette and a girls trio from our class. We undertook the management of the annual with the Junior Class and the guiding'influence of Supt.F.S. Warner, Class Sponsor, Miss Clingaman, Junior Sponsor, JMiss Miller. - - ' , Our last chance for Dramatics camo when we gave our Senior Play UAunt Cindy Cleans Upn, and here it is that we became noted for our diligence and ability. v A ' The much planned for trip to Washington D. C. climaxed two years efforts towards that end. - i -When the Senior Class of 1957 sat down to reminiece- we discovered that our flowers were in bloom, and as we stopped to admire them one seemed to appear more beautiful and more fragrant .--the uRed Rosef.- of ,.,, , f' I , - . u. HFreshmenH, the name of the first bed of this division, was under the supervision of Mr. Ridenour. Shortly after we were nicely settled we were informed by the bees, the messengers of all flowers, that the Sophomores were giving a party in our honor. What fun we had! Again we were transplanted to another bed the following September. This time it was nSophomoren and Mr. Ridenour was replaced by Mr. Brimmer, later assisted by Mr. Bruns. This year it was our privilege to deal with the Fresh- men the way we had been dealt with. Out went our bees with a message for the Freshies, resulting in a gathering on the village green, of the sprites of the two classes. Later in the year the Sophomore Class treated itself to an enjoyable time at a weiner roast--the second social event of the year. Another September and moving time again. This time with the care of Miss Miller in the WJolly Juniorn bed. In order to start the year out right we treated ourselves to a weiner roast in the'Westenbarger Woods. What can this NSpite Fencen be that our messengers are so enthused about? Oh it's the play the Junior Class is presenting. So out Hpopsn the little sprites one eve of October to have a Hhigh old timed acting the parts in this three-act comedy. Near the end of the year again our bees went out with an important message. This time it was to the Seniors and upper classmen, who were nearing the end of their journey in NOur High School Careern. On the date of May l, as if enchanted our gay little sprites appeared in formals for the HJunior-Senior Banquetn, each determined to make this last social event of the two classes an unforgettable one. This proved a very complete year with another large bulb added to our little store. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY The Freshman Class of 1955 started on their first road of learning in a new Packard, on the 4th day of'S6ptember in the year 1935, Mr. Brimmer, the driver, was under the supervision of Mr. Warner, with each individual of the class operating as a separate part of the car. Mr. Warner--the steering wheel--directed: Mr. Bruns, Mr. Brimmer, Miss Roux, Mr. Amos and Miss Miller, while Ethel Bruggemeier acted as the motor and Billy Salisbury, acting as the speedometer, wrote down the miles we have driven. Doris Bresler, the gas, cheered us on our way to Knowledge, and Margie Fausnaugh, the horn, let the public know just what we had done. At the beginning of the school year we had 55 parts to our car. On the way we lost four parts and gained two more making a total of 55 parts left. ' At the beginning of the Second road of Learning we changed some parts which were wearing out. Mr. Bruns as driver, with Billy Salisbury as the motor, Eleanor Scott as the speedometer, Doris Bresler, the gas helped us through the year. This year we had only 27 parts to our car. At the middle of the year we were joined by Zora Scoville from Bloomdale and John Buckingham from Fostoria. ,.,,. u. an . , H ., , 'W' 4254 ssis 'W L' nl QS Q, lx Qi if DS E DIE Egg Q fc E E+ E. H. S. Caravan. The schedule was somewhat different for the bus, as we were to take a four-subject course instead of the usual seven-subject course. ' The days and weeks soon went by and we prepared for the Eighth Grade State Tests. After our class was rated high in that test our bus stopped long enough for the Junior-Hi to win a trophy for being the County Championship Basketball Team. On September 5, 1956 an eager and enthusiastic group of students was again ready to continue on their journey. On the evening of November 17, 1956, we were initiated by the Sophomores.' Much time and preparation were Spent in getting ready for the P. T. A. Fair, an event of November 20. Several of the Freshman boys and girls were on the tumbling teams, as well as being in the Minstrel show. After some hard work on the part of the actors the Freshman presented nThe Calamity Howlern, as their one-act play. It was presented at Risingsun and we came out second. In order to play off class ties and for entertainment as well, the evening of March 30, 1957 was set aside as nFan Niten. The Freshman boys were defeated by the Senior boys in Volleyball, and the girls in Basketball. We were victorious in the boxing bout. Fred Dieter defeated Dale Stearns, a Senior boy. Another lap of our trip is nearly at an end, and we are preparing to leave our bus through the front exit. We have, we believe, begun to realize that, nThe Road of Toil leads to the City of Successn. yr,e4 VISUAlf EDUCATTQT E, L. Bowsher Director of Education of Ohio Visual Education is the application of Visual commun- ication to education. Man in making his very earliest records employed pictures. This 'was Visual Communication. This type of communication follows in an unbroken line from these first records down through the aggs to the present. It has undergone many evolutionary changes and from those first crude sketches of the cave man it emerges today as the motion picture. After the development of recorded speech or auditory communication in the form of writing and printing the evolution of visual communication has slowed down. But the discovery of nPersistence of Visionn, the development of photography, and the invention of usnap shotu cameras gave a great impetus to picture making and created an equally great popular interest. Improvement followed inprovement so rapidly that in less than twenty years after the first in' stantaneous camera, appeared, we had motion pictures, and another twenty years brought us talking pictures. Such rapid action has left most people dazed. They have not had time to analyze the momentous import of this new member in the field of communication. The movement known as nVisual Educationn has new become WerldUTido in its scope. No major notion has failed to rec- ognize its importance and many are subsidizing the production of educational films. The same is true among the states of the Union. Ohio is offering to itfs schools one of the best set-ups of any state for the free distribution of slides and films. ..,. T 39323152553 The first six years of ones school career determines the ease of adjustment for the advanced years in school and beyond. It is during this period that acclamation of each child to the routine and conduct of the school is made, that the foundation for acquiring more knowledge is laid, and training in thinking is begun. The accomplishing of this was performed in the first six grades of Montgomery Twp. -school this year by: Misses Flory, Carpenter, Linder, Baehman, Blackburn and Dehnoff. A great improvement has been made in reading facilities for these grades during this school year in the way of pro- vision of reading material and tables and book cases for the use and storage of that material. The program for the grades included many interesting things. Mention of the most outstanding follows: Choral reading has been done sueeeisfully in every grade to the extent that the first grade gave a performance in chapel and the fifth grade were observed by the High School Seniors. Study with the use of the Radio and the motion picture machine has proved valuable and interesting on appropriate occasions. , The achievements in art work are always a pleasure to observe around each room. ln the fifth grade it takes the form of clay and placques as a variation from two dimension work of earlier years. Each pupil can toll of a field trip he has taken to see something about which he has studied. Build thee more stately mansions, Oh my soul As the swift seasons roll Leave thy low vaulted past! Let each new mansion, nobler than the last Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length are free, . Leaving thine outgrown shell by lifeis unresting sea. Rythm, one of the fundamentals of music, is a basic element in the growth of a little child. There are many ways of approach but by far the best is the Rythm Band, the results of which, cooperation, concentration, musical appre- ciation of melody and time, are far reaching and build a foundation for musical training in later years. Montgomery has specialized in this type of musical development for several years. The current project has been an educational one for the 40 members from the First and Second Grades and we hope has given a great deal of enjoy- ment to the listeners. ELELW-m'A,RY GRADES MUSIClPRO5RAM Just as rythm is one of the fundamentals of music, so music is one of the fundamental elements of life and the form of expression. Montgomery's elementary music program has a four-fold aim. First to create a liking for music and an enjoyment in singing which leads to our' second aim of nevery child participationu, third is an appreciation of music, and fourth a knowledge of some of the basic facts. Public appearance, which too often is a great source of embarrassement, requires self-control and a feeling of ease. The music department is giving the children experience along this line 'in the many appearances before 'an audience through the medium of programs, especially Chapel, and in the culmination of all our efforts, the May Music Festival. .v ...few -.1.' tis- ,N Egg 15:55- ' in : 2' 5 ' 5'E'f::ssQ-.a-s': '1' M -.gem h. -1' iff, .f M A 'fn'-'2'r'E7 - -ff' E-fu. ,j..!:.::-, ,, , ' R5 .,.. Nobody in Montgomery High School needs wonder now, for the Museum contains a mounted specimen of that bird and its nest, along with fourteen other birds and animals. The specimens were all added this year as a result of the combined efforts of the students, who located killed or injured specimens, and Miss Miller who mounted them. The number of show cases for exhibiting reptiles, Mollosks, birds, animals, insects, rocks, minerals, soils, etc. has increased to occupy all the space on thefnorth will and on the west wall of the science room. Living specimens of flowers and fish fill the windows, and usually an experiment or two running for one of the science classes fills up any vacant space in the room, making that room an opportunity for learning from observa- tion. LIBRARY A library, consisting of a small collection of books was established in the early years of our school. After a few years other shelves and bookcases were added to take care of the new books that were constantly being added to the library. Our P. T. A. furnished reading circle books each'yearU'which were greatly appreciated. Encyclopedias and World Books were bought by the P. T. L. and School Board. Each year books are borrowed from the State Library. Last year during the ice storm the teachers built a counter which separates the study hall from the library. This new set-up called for a new system of records, and such a system was installed this year. If we have reading we are saved from the curse of lone- liness. So great and manifest are the blessings of the library that we as students of Montgomery High School, pause a moment to urge our parents to encourage Love for Books in their children. .-.,1,f:' 'xy - fl., L.. 3, EW 1 f A M . . It is on this afternoon that we attend a program assembled by one of the classes of the high school. The program usually consists of scripture and prayer, songs, poems, solos, duets, quartettes, or instrumental music, and a lecture. We have been very fortunate in having speakers who are authorities in their field. Mr. Fleckinger, a natural scientist and bird photographer from Toledo, showed and explained 150 specic of birds in colored slides, Chief Blue Skies, a full blooded Cherokee Indian, talked on the relat- ionship and misunderstanding between the red and white man and explained some of the Indian traditions to a very attent- ive audienceg A man from India, dressed in Hindu head dress, showed us by comparison the difference between the white race and the Hindu racog Dr. Hamlin formerly of Ohio State Univer- sity gave a lecture making his own illustration on the effect of alcohol in the bodyg Mrs. Burrows, a blind resident of the community effectively told of the Braile System, Mr. Leedy working on a problem for the U. S. Bureau of Conservation under the direction of Ohio State University gave a very appropriate Arbor day lecture on the Wild Life of Wood Co.3 An Australian working for the Great Lake Exposition told us of both the nature of the Exposition and of Australia. Special days have been solemnized by the cooperating of local talent with classes of the school. Especially have the Reverends Coad, Egbert, Moore, Turner and Flory, also the American Legion aided in this function. fX,fN -,fy Z ,R rx!! I 1: 1 Xflpf fl N - jj ' v Uf cnnno . K - 5 -J . On April 50, 1936 the American Legion Post 5561 Wayne, Ohio became the official sponsor of a Boy Scout troop--3517. The job of building a good organization had to start at the beginning since very few remnants of the previous unit were still available. An interested and capable troop committee composed of Walter Logan, John Rogers and C. B. Allen supplied the administrative spark necessary and the organization began to grow slowly. The same troop committee is functioning now for the second year and steady progress is being madei One of the high spots of the current year was the Dads' Nite Feed of February 4, 1936 when a real gang of boys and dads put away with gusto a real feed prepared by the women of the Legion Auxiliary and afterwards enjoyed short talks of Prof, lPowel1 of Bowling Green University and Scout Field Executive John Smart of the Toledo Area Council. Reese Mrs, Barlow is having trouble with Seth Haskins about selling her place to him. To make matters worse Dave Haskins loves June Barlow. To raise money to pay her taxes Mrs. Barlow is taking in tourists during the summer, Mr. Haskins hearing Dave ask June to marry him, declares that he will force Mrs. Barlow to sell, He is very angry at her for refusing to marry him when they were younger, Ho builds a fence called the nSpite Fencenshutting off the View of the Inn from the road. Thus the tourists cannot see the Inn. But alas Mr. Grahame, who really is the rich Mr. Horace Astor of Baltimore, comes to Mrs. Bar1ow's rescue. He buys the Inn and employs Mrs. Barlow as the housekeeper. For comedy we have Mrs. Dreyfus who is trying to marry her daughter Dora to millions. She finally succeeds in marrying Dora to rich young Harry Jackson. There are also Lucy Upton and gossiping Tubby Williams, who are very lovable but laughable. As a happy ending Dave and June are married. Also Mr. Grahame, ahas Mr. Astor, after much stammering and muttering persuades Mrs. Barlow to change her name to Astor. . . 1' 'rf ueuy J rm 'A uw G MS . ,. QQ 'l A W VALUE or ATHLETlCS Originally the term Athletics was applied to any kind of outdoor sports. More recently, however, its use has been restricted largely to trials of physical skill, strength, or endurance among a number of contestants. To gain the skill and endurance that will enable the athlete to withstand the prolonged strain of contests on the field, basket-ball floor, or the track the athlete has to subject himself to careful training. Through this careful training program we see the following' features so well exemplified in the program of athletics. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT: There is no surer road to the goal of perfect physical development and health than regular exercise in the open air. For stirring up the blood, devel- oping the muscles, clearing the head, and stimulating the appetite, nothing is better than athletic games. SACRIFTQE: One who follows this careiul training program naturally will have to make sacrifices,in some lines of endeavor, late hours, overindulgence foods and pastries. But there are reward for training: Chance to be of service to schools in representing the school in competitive sports. Of the honored group who wears the coveted letter representing achievement in the said sport are the following? Decorations were made in the colors of both classes and followed the theme of May Day in both dining hall and dance floor. The dining room was canopied with streamers of crepe paper of pastel shades and the tables were decorated with May flowers, candles, cups and napkins of various colors. Individual favors, May baskets with four flowers in each, further added to the beauty of the dinner room. The dinner skillfully cooked by the mothers of UJB 'J11I116!- class consisted of: A , Fruit Juice Cocktail Chicken a La King Mashed Potatoes Gravy Buttered peas in shells Rolls Butter Vegetable Gelatine Salad Vanilla Ice Cream White Cake The Sophomore girls, each wearing a white apron trimmed in a ruffle of a color harmonizing with the theme of the banquet, served the food. The toastmaster, Arthur Hespe presented the Tevenings program consisting of toasts from Miss Clingaman, Miss Miller Ray Huber, Mr. Bruns, Mr. Brimmer, and Hr. Warner. The banquet adjourned to reassemble in the auditorium also decorated to follow the theme of Hay Day with a May Pole forming the center of interest. ' At various times during the evening circle dances around the May Pole added interest and color to the evening of dancing. Punch in the hall furnished an attractive center for relaxation. Music was furnished by Stevonson's Orchestra from Latchey. Pl To Aa The annual P. T. A. Fair was held November 20, 1957 constituting the best attended program and most outstanding performance sponsored by the Montgomery Twp. P. T. A. The evening was started by entertainment from the first four grades, the nature of which was a radio program entitled the' nBiggest Little Broadcastn. It consisted of La Rhythm Band, lst and 2nd grades, Piano Solos, recitations conducted by the teachers of those grades. A pageant, nThe Bearers of Lightu was presented by grades ranging from 5 to 8. This pertained to Thanksgiving and was conducted by the teachers of these various grades. The contribution of the High School classes was a HMinstrel Shown, with outstanding features of dances and songs. The burst of laughter following the jokes expressed the appreciation of the audience. When the UGrand Finalen was played everyone knew that it was the end of our program for the evening, and time to adjourn. Concession of the evening included various things located around the building. In the lobby was a candy stand and the ones who ventured a little farther found that the kitchen was a commendable place to quiet hunger pangs. On the third floor of the building a fish pond and funhouse was constructed. For convenience a check room, was selected and the Senior's undertook the management of it. Over 50 merchants displayed their merchandise. This is the largest representative number of that kind of display ever to be held at our P. T. A. Fair. Other contributions to the evening were Agriculture, Needlework, Antiques and Floral displays. As the evening drew to a close the various committee members of tho organization counted their profits, and gave us the final report of more than S340.00, the largest sum of money we had ever taken in.
