This book has a two-fold purpose: first, that when the Seniors have graduated and are doing their share of work in a great world, they may find pleasure in looking into this book and may recall the happy events of their high school daysg also that it may establish a precedent for the school in years to come. We are offering this as a heritage to the students who will graduate in the future and are hoping fervently that they will continue it. Page Five MR. F. C. CAVENDISH Principal DEDICATION Since the Autumn of 1936, when we First became acquainted with our principal, Mr. Cavendish, there has grown in our hearts an admiration for one who has worked so loyally for the upbuilding of our school. We feel that this tribute should be paid to Mr. Cavendish, who has filled superbly a responsible position for so many years, therefore, We, the Senior Class affectionately dedicate the first year- book of Montgomery High School to him. Girl Reserves, a division of the Young Women's Christian Association, organized in Montgomery High School in 1926, is one of the oldest and most active clubs in school. Since 1928 it has been sponsored by Mrs. Wilkinson. The purpose of Girl Reserves is to develop high school girls along the three-fold line of body, mind, and spirit. Consequently, the yearls work is built around spiritual, mental, and social activities. The weekly meetings with programs planned and executed by the girls aim to develop the mental and spiritual side. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas the club adopts a family for which it provides food, boys, and even articles of clothing. For the past eight years it has presenrted to the school a gift, ranging from special speakers brought in and all girl teas to gifts of a bulletin board, dictionary, a clock, and other articles for the use of the whole school. All money for these activities is earned by the girls through candy sales and other enterprises. For the physical side the club maintains a basketball team, which this year won the intra-mural trophy, and other athletic groups, and it also enjoys hikes and picnics. The chief social event of the group is the annual Spring formal dance, given this year in honor of St. Patrick's day. 7.-Q X Page Thirty nme Sophomore Girl Reserves OFFICERS: President, Jo Ann Rader, Vice-President, Mary Jane Harrington, Secretary, Betty Paynterg Treasurer, Evelyn Russellg Publicity Superintendent, Frances Lee Matheny. FACULTY ADVISER: Mis Harriet Skaggs. In 1931 because of the crowded conditions of the Senior Girl Reserves whose sponsor was Mrs. Wilkinson, -it was decided to organize a younger club. The result of this organiza- tion was The Sophomore Girl Reserves, whose first sponsor was Miss Mary Baxter Cun- ningham. This club now draws its members from the Freshman and Sophomore classes. The membexship is by invitation only. The club is a member of the National Y. W. C. A. In the fall of 1935 Miss Harriet Skaggs was appointed sponsor of the organization and is still holding this office, CLUB ROLL: N. Anderson, M. J. Bond, J. Corbitt, E. Dent, V, Dupey, P. Durrett, R. MEMBERSHIP: Any young man student of the upper three classes in high school who subscribes to the stated purpose of this organization, and is accepted by a vote of the club is accepted for membership. The main event of the year was the I-Ii-Y Bowery Dance, which proved to be a very successful affair. gi.- :L Page Forty- one l Science Club OFFICERS: President, Bob Yeager, Vice-President, Alline Kingg Secretary, Katherine Alapicg Treasurer, Edward Vining. It is sponsored by the West Virginia Academy of Science, and holds its annual state convention in conjunction with this organization. Keith Lyons of Charleston High School is the state president. The Bell Chapter of Montgomery High School was named in honor of Mr. Raymond Bell, who was its first sponsor. At the present time there are fifteen active members. During the year the members have studied the classification of moths and butterflies, the developing of pictures, and the processes involved in making ice cream. Just now they are planning to do some scientific finger printing with the aid of the local state police. Page Forty-two , N Glee Club OFFICERS: President, Helen Ingram, Vice-President, Gene Clarkg Secretary-Treasurer, Lucille Kimble. FACULTY ADVISER: Miss Lillian Dent. The Glee Club of Montgomery High School has this year had one of its greatest years, with its membership totaling forty-two members. It seems now that the Girls' Glee Club is no longer, since this year a number of boys have joined. These Basses and Tenors have improved the quality of the singing of the club a great deal. Since the high school trio was graduated last year, a new one was formed. Composing the new trio are Lucille Kimble, Jo Ann Rader, and Paula Gene Young. The new trio has appeared at the Woman's 'Club and the Lion's Club. The Choral Festival was -held April 11, 1940, at 8:00 P. M. Twelve high schools were represented and more than four hundred pupils participated. This year the festival was held at the Montgomery high school, and every Glee Club member has worked very hard to make it a success. Next year several members will be chosen to attend the State Chorus. This will meet at Huntington at the same time that the S. E. A. meets. It was at Wheeling this year, which made it impossible for anyone to attend. In order to qualify for the State Chorus, one must have a good voice, a knowledge of music, and practice under a private teacher. : L Page Forty three Page Forty-four MONTGOMERY HIGH Scnoor. The organization is gradually reaching a completion of perfect instrumentation which was begun in 1937. At that time the band owned one mellophone, two basses and one bass drum. Since then the following instruments have been added, all owned by the band as an organization: one set of tympanig four French hornsg one bass drurng two additional bassesg four snare drums. This has been in addition to the purchase of eight uniforms for band, and four drum-major outfits. The band has one of the largest music libraries in the state. Citation cords were purchased this year for all uniforms to further ornament the uniforms. In 1938 the band was awarded second place in band in the annual North-South contest held at Charleston and the following year at Webster Springs was awarded first prize in the annual Rhododendron Festival held there, competing against some of the best bands of the state. In the contest at Charleston, Sara Lee Jenkins and Charles Tabit were awarded first prize for the best girl and boy drum-majors, respectively. The Greyhound Band was organized in 1926, by H. H. At last, I've got it! These were the exclamations of two young M. H. S. amateur scientists. What had they found? At last after many months of hard labor, they had completed the first successful time- traveling machine. And this is how they used it. As an experimental trip, they went twenty years into the future, and looked up all their old classmates, and returned to tell of their experiences. LOG-We arrived in the future world just a few moments ago. It is a strange feeling, this sudden transi- tion into the ultra modern world of 20 years from now or should Isay then? We met Jim Nunley first. He's a respectable bald-headed businessman. When we met him, he was just returning home to his wife, Mary Bowles. He was the owner of a large chain-store.
