Traditions of long standing, and new ideas kept the social picture on the move. Dances were held of every type from square to ballroomg sweater hops to formals. Pep rallies in the stadium, or during lunchtime in the cafeteria, and roaring bonfires raised Blair spirits before big games. lngenuity in such ef- forts as the mock football game displayed the desire for variety on the part of the student body. Foreign students brought with them new customs and traditions to enrich the backgrounds of the Blairites with whom they were associated. Students distinguished themselves in many ways. The Senior Class play was unsurpassed for dramatic excellenceg and the Variety Show was a sparkling exhibition of varied abilities. Sports added their impetus to activities, providing an excuse for the Homecoming festivities. Blair's victories over Bethesda in football and basketball, coupled with the gratification of promotion and graduation, rounded off the year to the satisfaction of all, leaving the new alumni and their undergraduate compatriots with pleasant memories and the feeling of a job well done. in E33 9' 5 ww '13, Q Ax, u Nwv i , , 1 f4A 4 EE! in 'ill 'Ill MPV A Q1-f Q A' 4 . 4 fr' -51 , . The parade wound through Silver Spring down to the Stadium, where joan Harmon, last year's Blair Sweetheart, and Charles I4 Crum, student council president of '51, alighted to reign over the game with Gon- zaga. Really a swell weekend! The festivities began with the mock football game Friday aftemoon, the bonfire Friday night, and ter- minated with the gala homecoming dance on Saturday. Cries of, 'Fight, team fight', and, Let's go B1azers', echoed from the stands, and provided a spirited background for the great- est game in the Blair gridiron program. It concluded the season for a real fighting team. Blair defeated her arch-rivals 26-6, after two and one-half hours of thrilling football. Seven Blair lovelies were se- lected. Patsy McDonaldemerged victorious. The top social event of the year --- the Christmas Formal --- was a medley of blue and silver, creating the effect of a star-studded sky. The dancing rotated around the blue and sil- ver Christmas tree, to the music of the Sentamentalists. Ben Ko- tulski, President of the Student Council, and joan Harmon, last year's Sweetheart, crowned Patsy amid the applause of the court and audience. The latter half of the year brought with it the production all the school awaited -- the Variety Show. Students from all three clases, as well as faculty members, presented their talents in this gay revue. The Sadie Hawkins spirit in Blair femininity was given a chance to bloom at the Vice-Versa. Males, protesting and otherwise, were escorted by the girls, bearing up under their weird corsages. The Sweater Dance boasted of 'woolies' of every size, color and description, and Steadies wore sweaters which were alike. Blair's own dance band played for this event. All this gaity, however, brought nearer the day of graduation. What senior could help but feel a little sad at the thought of leaving hisschool, and the remembrance that those days would soon be gone but not forgotten. 'AS F1 F PULLOVERS AND cardlgans set the style at the annual Sweater Dance in the gym. TURN-ABOUT was fair play at the Vice-Versa.. ,V X Vx 1 - , . , . The myriad of courses had to be met by a variety of instructors in every field. The larger enroll- ment caused new problems. Another building arose on what used tobethe old parking lot, pro- viding the school with a five-building campus. The increase in classes brought forth a need for more teachers. The sections left no spare room in the school, to the dismay of some space-hungry or- ganizations. Classes of every size and description were the order of the day. Maps, Bunsen bumers, add- ing machines, and the ever present books were stan- dard equipment. The odor of formaldehyde or burning sulphur informed one of the presence of a lab, compli- cated formulas of great length were the trademark of a higher math class. The mark ofthe banking profession was put upon each member of that organization in the form of ink-stained fingers, and that of the artist by air-brush paint. Our teachers were the molders and developers of our thoughts and actions. Our display of knowledge on a job, or our future academic excellence in college was the aftermath of their training, for which we were extremely grateful. ADMINISTRATIUN G-5 Daryl W. Shaw B.S.Ed., M.Ed. Principal. and Vice-Principals. Marian L. Schwartz B.A., M.A., Instruction Thomas W. Pyles B.A., M.A., Attendance 26 Of course you were proud of Blair, but did you ever stop to think of the problems that arose in a school of that size? Who did the worrying about the new buil- dings, about improving attendance, providing for ab- sent faculty members, and employing new ones? The answer was, The Administration. Mr. Shaw, Mr. Pyles, and Miss Schwartz directed us through the school's growing pains, for, 1500 students called for a lot of preparation. Through it all, the administration guided Blair to a high rating in the recent evaluation. Student govemment cooperated and made Blair a truly demo- cratic school. f' i IJIRECTURS UF UUR WELFARE. The job of the guidance department was to cope with these in a sympathetic and personal manner. Conferences were arranged on matters which were to concem our future. Arrangement ofsuitable sched- ules was necessary the first year, but ques- tions popped up now and then. College counseling was an important part of the guidance department. Mrs. Macdonald was the one, from whom to borrow catalogues, to arrange conferences with college representatives, and from whom to get advice on requirements. Students were well served by our four advisors. This year a new method was started, an advisor was to take a class through its three years. lt was hoped, that by knowing the student better, that guid- ance could be more efficient. Julia C. Formaldehyde or burning sulphur made one aware of the nearness of a lab, or a compli- cated formulae on a blackboard informed a person that he was in a physics class. From soph biology to senior physics, the science department did an interesting job. Sophomore amoeba hunters Betty Bell, John Weiss, Roberta McCleary, Douglas Kruse, Mary Warren, and Pat Johnson kept the 'critters' in focus. Cars parked along all adjacent streets, and jammed into the parking lots, were visible signs of the pilgrimage of loyal Blairites to the battle-ground of their Alma Mater. The necessary ritual of the entrance gate, picking up a program, buying a coke anda box of pretzels, were completed, and the shuffle toward the stands was begun. Flocks of Ways and Means committee members descended like a swarm of locusts, urging the purchase of air cushions or booster buttons. The band struck up a lively air, and the trees of Sligo valley heard cries of Fight, team, fightl' The team captains shook hands, and joined the crowd standing at attention asthe strains ofthe National Anthem preceded the contest. The melody ended withacheer, and the spectators were seated. A nod from the kicker, and the great red line moved down the field! The kick was in the airg the birth of another Blazer sports battle. BLAIR 0. .Northwestern I2 Northwestem High School was the first invader of the Blair Stadium on September 29. The Blazers fought gamely despite the over-whelming strength of this new Prince Georges' County School. Two scores early in the first half were enough--the Blazers failed to score and Northwestem went on to win 12-0. BLAIR Southern 19 Southem High School of Baltimore showed up on the Blair schedule for the first time in 1951. No score first half, then behind in the second half, and Southern pushed across three scores. In the fourth period Blair made it-first score of the year when Roger Hazell blocked a Southern punt and tackle, Allen Freas fell in the end zone. Ralph Hitch's conversion was perfect, but Southem won 19-7. Don' Dillard 1387, sprinted down the side line with Richard Lent 1775, Southern end, who attemp- ted to make the tackle. QV P 'T' BLAIR I3 Ahegheny 0 On October 19, Blair obtained its first win by defeating Allegheny High School at Cum- berland. After a scoreless first half, Bill Tumer blocked and recovered an Allegheny punt to set up the first of two scores by Elmer Robin- son. Robinson, himself, started the second by intercepting a Camper pas, then a 48 yard run by Dennis Williams, and three carries by Robinson pushed it over, Ralph Hitch's place- ment was good and Blair knocked off the three touchdowns, favored Allegheny, 13-O. R.onnie Sisk 1911, rounded end for Allegheny's longest gaing as Tom Oyster 1571, and Roger Hazell 1531, gave chase. Right: Earl Ball, Backg Alan Jabaut, Line, Norman Balderson, Line. BLAIR Gonzaga I2 October 27 brought the Cath- olic League runner-up, Gon- zaga, to Blair Stadium to high- light Blair 's Homecoming. Blair's hard charging defensive line, led by ends, jon Hardy and NedMur- phy, and line backer Elmer Rob- inson stopped the powerful Gon- zaga cold. When the two fourth- quarter pases by the Eagle's Bill Cody were made, the fate of the game was decided 12-0 fav- oring Gonzaga. Coohdge 21 Blair retumed home for the final two games of the season and November 10 brought Calvin Coo- lidge High School for the next to the last game. Blair starting fast, pushed downfield with Elmer Robinson carrying for the score. A slippery start, but Blair came back with Roger Hazell hitting Ralph Ward and Ralph Hitch with long passes to set up a score by Elmer Robinson. Robinson scored again a few minutes later, after Bill Turner blockeda Hagerstown punt and returned it to the 15 yard line. Rather an unsuccess- ful season in the win column, but fifty-one Blazers will be remembered as a team that never gave up, even with the scoreboard and the clock reading against them. Led by such individual Stars as Elmer Robinson, who was elected outstanding player and awarded the Bob Cushman Memorial Trophy, Bill Turner, and Alan Freas, Blair beat the Bethesda Barons for the fourth year in a row and won the possession of the new trophy for one yeah The new trophy was given jointly by the Beth a nd Silver Spring Lions Clubs, and was presented at the annual C1ub's banquet for the two squads at The Indian Springs Country Club. The trip to Allegheny marked the first Blair over- night trip for the squad. Heavy rains led to the unusual in football: a postponed game. Despite the vatsity's ups and downs, the Blair junior Varsity had a good record with three wins, three losses and a tie. The Little Reds' lost to Sherwood 19-0, Fredrick 27-6, then tied Coolidge 6-6. The I. V, then beat Gonzaga 14-6, dropped to Northwestem l2-0, winding up with impresive wins over B.C.C, 25-13 and St. john's 6-0. t Bo-Captainsgfa Wow 1 l Elmer Robinson X E? 5 f Roger Hazell K' J' 1 141 'ffl . SILVER CHIPS . carrier of news. Blair's journalistic effort, Silver Chips, enjoyed an enviable reputation among scho- lastic newspapers. This record of school and community affairs was prepared and edited by the students to the accompaniment of clacking typewriters. Many hours of toil were necessary for the completion of an issue, as any staff member would testify. The newspaper editorialized those situa- tions which merited comment, but the ma- jority of printed material was news and facts of interest to the student body. A nation-.wide supplement, Roto, was in- cluded in each issue. This rotogravure con- tained high school and teen-age news from many parts of the country, with publicity given to ideas and accomplishments of other schools that might prove helpful to the readers. The school was proud of Silver Chips, with very good reason, too, we might add. They received first place last year from the Co- lumbia Scholastic Press Association and Nat- ional Scholastic Press Association. The -Edi- tor was secretary of the Maryland Scholastic Press Association that year. Editorial Staff . ..
