Mr. John Bennett Completing his 25th year as a member of M.B.A.’s administration, Mr. Bennett remains a valuable resource in the M.B.A. community. In the classroom, Mr. Bennett may be found teaching Algebra II and Geometry. However, he is not limited to academics; he holds the important position of Athletic Director. He also serves as Head Coach of the Varsity Basketball team and as the Service Club Sponsor. Mr. Bennett’s efforts and involvement in the area of drug and alcohol abuse have inspired many in the M.B.A. community. He received a B.E. from Vanderbilt University. Ms. Mary Comfort Stevens Ms. Stevens is the college counselor at M.B.A. She gives of herself to help each student make plans for the future by helping him pick out a college and complete an application. After studying at Mount Holyoke and Sorbonne in Paris and receiving her B.A. in European Literature and French, she worked at Phillips Academy, where she taught French for a year and also worked with admissions, college counseling, and alumni relations. 14 Office Staff The five members of the Montgomery Bell Academy Office Staff are vital to the school. Mrs. Bradshaw, the Upper School Reception- ist, is always ready to help others with prob- lems. Mrs. Garriot is the greatly appreciated secretary of Mr. Bondurant and Mr. Drake, while Mrs. Liles adds her support to the office staff. Mrs. Morrissey serves as the Junior School receptionist, and the school could not manage without office and business manager Mrs. Sowell. ms- r .di

Dr. Harold Crowell Dr. Harold Crowell is a busy man, not only because he is the Dean of Faculty and Students, but also because he is the chairman of the science department. His other responsibilities include annual advisor. Junior class advisor, and Physics teacher. His thorough teaching method and enjoyable manner enable him to relate to students on a personal basis. He received his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt. Not tolerating misbehavior, he upholds the great M.B.A. reputation with discipline and concern for students. Dr. G. Edward Gaffney Dr. Edward Gaffney, Head of the Junior School, helps stimulate and prepare the seventh and eighth graders for High School. He is, however, not limited to just the Junior School. He teaches Latin from the first year all the way up to the AP course, and teaches a Greek course for some students. He has studied in many universities. He received his M.A., B.A., and Ph.D. at Vanderbilt, and studied at Rome University and at Gospel in Athens. For the past twelve years, he has sponsored a trip to Europe; this year’s trip was to France. He is also a sponsor for the Junior Honor Society and Demerit Supervisor for the seventh and eighth graders. Mr. James Poston Mr. Poston has been a member of the MBA faculty for 26 years. He has his MA from Peabody. Mr. Poston has been the director of the MBA Players since 1961. Mr. Poston came to MBA in 1 959 and worked until 1 968. He then went to Florida to teach and later returned to MBA in 1971, and has been a member of the faculty ever since. He is now the head drug counselor and is in charge of Project 7 1 4. He is the head tennis coach and has been the district coach of the year 84-87 and state coach of the year 86-87. He best sums up his career by “To err is human, to forgive divine.” Mr. Laird Smith, Jr Mr. Laird Smith is the director of buildings and grounds at M.B.A. He graduated from M.B.A. in 1958 and returned to the Hill in December of ’73 to work part- time, signing on full-time in 1982 after the construction of the Massey building, the track, and the new gym. Mr. Smith takes pride in his work and wishes to instill a similar pride in the students by providing them a beautiful campus. This hard work has not gone unnoticed: last year, M.B.A. placed second in the private school category in a city-wide school campus competition.
