But he, in his private observatory, cataloguing obscure and nebulous stars of the human mind, which as yet no man has thought of as such — watching days and months sometimes for a few facts; correcting still his old records; must relinquish display and immediate fame.” Ralph Waldo Emerson “A pandemonium of enthusiasm rips the air and destroys the eardrums and vocal cords. It is a veritable volcano of enthusiasm, and it is in no way lessened or abated by the generally known fact that the spontaneous eruption is rehearsed . . . and the odd thing is that, although the technique is cut and dried, the enthusiasm is genuine.” John Steinbeck ' • r ' it ' : ; • 1 J • V 5 . . .. . .• 1 - • ' 1 b r ’ .1 1 ■ i 1 w Wm . ..c ■ rntT: ,1 f “It is impossible to believe the emotional and spiritual intensity and the pure, classic beauty that can be produced by a man . . Ernest Hemingway “Nothing ever succeeds which exuberance and spirits have not helped to produce . 55 Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche i 11 “O happiness! our being’s end and aim! Good, pleasure, ease, content! whate’er thy name: That something still which prompts the eternal sigh, For which we bear to live, or dare to die . 53 Alexander Pope ‘ 4 -; -m “For how many things, which for our own sake we should never do, do we perform for the sake of our friends.” Marcus Tullius Cicero HOMECOMING On the night of October 18, Miss Sally Dorris reigned as 1968 Homecoming Queen. She was attended by Senior Attendants, Miss Margie Shaffer and Miss Tina Cummings. A victory on the gridiron and a combo afterwards made the night complete. lilMHnU yW SB luflH fcJSMP M JHfl if k ‘ C l , Ij B ‘ . 1 « t ii § I ' « • v - v uc , • There is little doubt that cheerleading is a thankless job — few students have any idea how much time and effort these boys and girls spend in promoting the spirit of the school. To Captain Margie Shaffer, Tina Cummings, Sally Dorris, Ramsey Burton, Judy Quinn, Kathleen Patrick, Katie Haltom, and Cathy Leinart — along with the boy cheerleaders — Berry Plolt, Mac Pirkle, J B Marks, and Lee Steinhouse — we can only express a gratitude which falls far short of the praise these people deserve. DEDICATION Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Our chief want in life is somebody who shall make us do what we can.” It may be safely assumed that no man at MBA has more successfully motivated his students to develop their highest potentials than the man who has been the guiding spirit behind our school’s football success. He is a man of few words, a realist with a highly developed sense of the personal needs and aspirations of his students and players, a man who has subordinated his every interest to the good and honor of the school he serves. In the truest sense of the word, he is a gentleman; and, in the final analysis, what more can be said? It is with a great deal of personal pride that the annual staff dedicates the 1969 BELL to Coach Tommy Owen. mb 20 ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES Chairman of the Board MR. JOHN E. HEADMASTER There can be no dispute that all paths on the Hill lead to the office of the tireless headmaster, Mr. Francis E. Carter. Besides being the chief administrator, Mr. Carter serves as student counselor, parent consoler, supervisor of the Senior Class, history teacher, chief sports fan, and custodian. His devotion to MBA has made possible numerous improvements in the school plant, its curriculum, and its athletic program since his arrival in 1957. Through his administration MBA has become one of the most respected private independent schools in the nation. No school can boast of a more wonderful headmaster. MRS. The cornerstone of our way of life . . . On my honor as a gen- tleman .... The Honor System, founded by the students themselves in 1945, is the single most distinguishing factor of Mont- gomery Bell Academy. Composed entirely of students, the Honor Council exists for the purpose of helping the student should he find himself in difficulty with the system. This code of conduct remains the basis for life at M.B.A., and endeavors to promote the ideals of the gentleman among the student body. HONOR COUNCIL 86 Seated: R to L. The leaders of tomorrow . . . Constitutions . . . T-shirts . . . Student government. . . . Composed of the four officers of each class, The Student Council serves as a liaison between students and the faculty. By serving as a forum for student expression, the Council seeks to serve the best interests of the students by making suggestions to the administration concerning matters of school policy, by voicing the opinions and attitudes of the students and by helping students discipline themselves within the framework of the policies of the school. Totomoi is an honorary society designed to recognize students, faculty members, and friends of the school whose leadership and service have contributed significantly to the continuous improvement of the school. Outstanding achievement in the fields of scholarship, athletics, student government, forensics and dramatics, publications, organ- izations, and citizenship qualify a student for induction into the organization. Although primarily an honorary position, Totomoi members continue their leadership and service through projects deemed worthy to the school. TOTOMOI 88 rViV Brooks, J., Ownbey, Justice, Harbison. The Junior and Senior Honor Societies are na- tional organizations designed to recognize and honor those students who demonstrate outstand- ing scholastic achievement. Requiring a student to maintain for three consecutive semesters the grade average required for the Privilege List, these clubs have a membership of less than 3% of the Student Body. Society membership is strictly honorary, and reflects great credit upon its members. -fc First Row: Dubuisson, Apffel, Frist, Rose, D. Collins, Crabtree, P. Jones, Murphy, D. Not for service done, but for service yet to do . . . Service to school, to community, to others. . . . Under the supervision of Mr. Bennett, the Service Club has been involved in many worth- while projects: ushering for football games, col- lecting money at basketball games, sponsoring combos, participating in the March of Dimes. It would indeed be impossible to enumerate the many services performed by the various members of the club; the members have as their reward a concept of the true spirit of service to the com- munity. Members of the Big Red Club inspire team by spelling out GO. BIG RED CLUB GIMME AN M . . ..School spirit . . . Cheer- leaders . . . Pep rallies . . . Bonfires . . . “Now we’ll have a few words from Smiley Denson.” Under the leadership of Berry Holt, the Big Red Club has continued to instill ' into the student body a sense of school spirit, school loyalty, enthusi- asm, and support for all the various activities of the school. The club has engaged in such activities as ushering, sponsoring combos, and furnishing rides to all away football games. The highlight of the year was its sponsorship of the Milam-Colson concert. The Big Red Club has done an excellent job this year in boosting school spirit and promises to grow and continue in this function. Under the leadership of Henry Walker, The Forensic Club has continued to give students train- ing in the vital art of public speaking. Providing such events as original orat ory, dramatic interpre- tation, humorous reading, and extemporaneous speaking, the Forensic Club has continued to give students an opportunity to compete in interscho- lastic meets. Mrs. Selma Ridgway, aided by Mr. Terry Holcomb, has carefully coached the mem- bers in their various areas with the result that they have compiled an outstanding record, and have won several trophies in tournaments throughout the area. DEBATE CLUB FORENSIC CLUB Thinking quickly and effectively on your feet . . . Points and counter-points . . . Clever reason- ing and smooth talking often supersede a lack of evidence. . . . The Debate Club has continued to give students an opportunity to match their wits, intellect, rea- soning, and speaking ability with fellow students in interscholastic. competition. The skills acquired at the podium will prove invaluable towards de- veloping their ability to communicate effectively with other people. DRAMATICS CLUB All the world’s a stage . . . All of our own hopes, triumphs, fears, and disappointments, enacted on a tiny stage . . . The human drama of our own lives portrayed. . . . Of all the clubs on the M.B.A. campus, the Dra- matics Club has seen the greatest expansion this year. Mr. Terry Holcomb, who majored in Dramatics at Vanderbilt, has undertaken many new projects for the club this year, including four cuttings from Shakes- peare, a melodrama performed by the Seventh Grade dramatics group, and the major production of the year, Mr. Roberts. Norvell Rose, as Antony and Tommy Brothers, as Caesar, combined their histrionic efforts to enact the murder scene from Julius Caesar; and Tommy Barton gave an enthralling performance with Candy Creswell of the dagger scene in Macbeth. Mac Pirkle and Sally Dorris gave a hilarious performance from The Taming of The Shrew ; and the Seventh Grade actors delighted the entire student body with the melodrama, Saved From the Fate of Her Sister. Tommy Barton, Tommy Brothers, Norvell Rose, and George Copple brilliantly enacted the Broadway classic, Mr. Roberts. a 1 .. i k ( . tv r First Row: Rose, Benz, Cannon, ApfFel. Someday these will be the memories, not the numbers on the scoreboard at the final gun. FOOTBALL It would be impossible for the student to ap- preciate fully the amount of effort — and suffering that goes into the building of a championship team, a team led by seniors that have been a part of three consecutive N.I.L. Championships and two straight State Championships. No one will for- get that Coach Owen, Coach Rogers, and Coach Ridgway produced a winning team. The team members, however, won far more than eleven games and a State Championship. In the final period, the Big Red was able to put the game out of reach of a very spirited Hillwood eleven. Bim Glasgow and Duke Rose led the tenacious defense while the efforts of Barry Banker and Barrett Sut- ton provided the offensive edge for the Big Red to whip the Toppers, 17-7. A week later, MBA exploded with an awesome show of offensive power to demolish hapless An- tioch. Barrett Sutton, behind the great blocking of Mike Denson and Bill Davenport, scored three of the five Big Red touchdowns. Billy Frist hurled a scoring bomb to Bill Summers for one tally, and fleet-footed wingback Dave Alexander scored the final TD. The offensive showing of 208 yards was complemented by the defense which held the Bears to 88 yards rushing. To Glasgow’s surprise, Sutton snags a Power pass. Banker shifts into high gear. i The look of love. MBA 45; FRANKLIN 0 A bitterly fought contest on Frank Andrews Field left Franklin on the short end of the score by 45 points. With the game less than five minutes old, Barrett Sutton raced 49 yards to put six on the board. Lithe Barry Banker then twisted and feinted through the Rebel defense for a crowd- pleasing 30-yard tally. Quarterback Power, Bill Floyd, and Banker each scored on short plunges; Power rifled an 11 -yard strike to Rob Barrick late in the fourth quarter. The longest scoring jaunt of the night came on a 77-yard punt return by Jeff Peeples. The Denson-led defense not only shut out the Rebels, but held them to 16 yards rushing! Hard-working cheerleaders Margie and Tina. 10 5 MBA 20; PEARL 7 MBA’s defense was up tight as it stopped Pearl with two first downs and minus 14 yards rushing. Power took charge after a Tiger end rambled 37 yards to put the PHS club ahead; “Stump” hit Dave Alexander with a 59-yard bomb to set up the go-ahead score, a feather-soft toss to Barrett Sutton all alone in the end zone. Big Jeff clinched the contest with a twenty-yard spurt with 4:40 left in the game. ’Bama-bound Mike Denson was superb on defense, and his blocking opened gaping holes in the vaunted Tiger defense. Pearl mentor James Armstrong had nothing but praise for the Big Red, a 20-7 victor. Peeples rises to the occasion. Big Alex gives Tiger a ride. MBA 20; OVERTON 7 The Big Red failed to crack the hred-up Over- ton defense during the first half, but finally got rolling to produce a convincing 20-7 victory. The end of the third quarter left the score 7-7 ; but in the final stanza Montgomery Bell erupted for two quick scores by Jeff Peeples and Barrett Sutton. Peeples struck pay dirt first on a 62-yard jaunt around end to put MBA ahead; Sutton then iced the game with a 48-yard scoring dash. Denson and Glasgow turned in fine performances on de- fense to help the team to its fifth victory of the season. Peeples lunges for six. Power gives Buckwheat a ticket to ride. io 7 io8 MBA 34; MUS 7 MBA’s fabled fourth quarter spurt left a strong MUS team a battered 34-7 loser. The overflow Homecoming crowd saw the score tied 7-7 at half, but Peter Power’s one-yard plunge put the Big Red out to stay early in the third quarter. The fourth quarter explosion began in a big way with Barrett Sutton’s 84-yard romp right through the middle of the MUS defense. Peeples and Floyd added to a the total later in the game. Coach Owen said after the game, “Sutton’s long run really helped. Mike Denson made a couple of great plays in the second half and put some pressure on them. That was the difference in the second half.” Dave Alexander, injured in the third quarter, was lost for the Hillsboro game with a badly sprained ankle, but Bud Curtis and sophomore Bill Peer- man stepped in to do a fine job. “Gimme some skin.” “Verry interesting.” Power looks for . . . Curtis downfield. MBA 27; HILLSBORO 0 Hillsboro’s donkeys proved no stubborn foe as MBA rolled to its seventh straight win of the season with an easy 27-0 victory. An aroused MBA eleven kicked off to the Burros and r ced down- field to grab a fumble. Three plays later Jeff Peep- les roared by the porous Hillsboro defense for six points. Jeff was to turn the trick two more times that night, amassing 173 yards on the ground. Powerful Barrett Sutton bulled over for six more to complete the scoring. The entire squad saw action as the Burros could generate little attack against the defensive forward wall of Woodcock, Burkhalter, Hamilton, and Rose. This victory pro- vided MBA with an NIL record of twenty-three straight victories without a defeat and a bid to the Clinic Bowl. no As Peebles moves in one . . . MBA 25; SPRINGFIELD 0 On November 1 MBA traveled to Springfield and returned with a hard-earned 25-0 win. A stingy defense, with Burkhalter and Peerman lead- ing the way, held the hefty Jackets to a meager 93 yards rushing; and the Big Red rambled for 284 yards behind the pin-point passing of Peter Power. “Stump” scored once on a six yard burst and threw two touchdown strikes: the first a perfect 52-yard bomb to Buckwheat, the second a 9-yard bull’s-eye to Bud Curtis. Peeples put the finishing touches on the victory with a fourth quarter score. Peerman’s fine punting and the defense kept Springfield on the down-hill side of the field all evening, and the Big Red left no doubt that the city boys can pack a mean lick. MBA .53; GLENCLIFF 0 High school All-American Jeff Peeples put on an unbelievable offensive show as he scored four touchdowns to lead the 53-0 trouncing of Glen- cliff . The Power-piloted offense ripped the Colts for 427 yards total offense; the spectacular de- fense threw the Colt backs for so many losses that at the end of the evening Glencliff found them- selves eleven yards in the red in the rushing depart- ment. Speedy wingbacks Alexander and Curtis slashed for three more scores, Curtis for two and Big Alex for the other. Coach Owen’s defensive secondary of Banker, Peerman, and Peeples com- pletely smothered the opponent’s passing attack with the help of great outside pressure from “Cub” Dale and Duke Rose. cheerleaders move in another. Ill MBA 18; RYAN 0 MBA closed out its regular season with a rain- soaked 18-0 win over Father Ryan. Both teams were scoreless in the first half as the mud cancelled all offensive efforts; in the second half, however, Peeples and Power took over. On the second play of the third period, Super Jeff fought the mud and the Irish tacklers for a 54-yard gain. The Big Red offensive machine then moved the ball to the one where Peeples scored. Faking beautifully, quarter- back Power moved the team 83 yards in 16 plays for another touchdown. Big Jeff ended the scoring with a seven yard burst after Glasgow recovered a fisheater fumble on the twenty. Ryan’s offensive ef- forts were completely frustrated by Woodcock, Denson and Co. r V V mm i SjSgfp. smsmmk si MBA .35; GALLATIN 7 For the third consecutive Thanksgiving, Coach Tommy Owen’s MBA football team finished its season undefeated and proved again its supremacy in the NIL and in the state with a convincing Clinic Bowl victory. The decisive win over the highly ranked Green Wave of Gallatin clinched for the Big Red the AP, Litkenhous, and Action Ratings State Championships. Gallatin drew first blood with a Lassiter-tossed aerial early in the game, but a crunching safety by monster man Bert Dale ' started things for the state’s number one team. Calling a magnificent game, Peter Power hurled a 48-yard scoring strike to Buckwheat Banker, who had outraced a dumb- founded Gallatin secondary. From then on, the Big Red dominated the game and went on to win 35-7. The offense, led by Peeples, Power, and Sut- ton, gained a total of 322 yards; the defense, be- hind hard-hitting Bill Woodcock and Karl Hamil- ton, gave up only 167 yards. Congratulations to the whole team for a tre- mendous season and a great Clinic Bowl victory. B. P. steals one from Jeffrey as Gallatin player curses himself. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Following in the footsteps of the state champion- ship team, the MBA Junior Varsity completed a successful season of four victories and one loss. After conquering BGA twice, Antioch, and Over- ton, the Big Red lost a one-point decision at the hands of a powerful Hillwood team in the closing seconds of an exciting game. With such a fine rec- ord, there is little doubt that the J.V. stars of this year will help to carry on the winning tradition of MBA football on the varsity next year. MICROBE FOOTBALL ”5 BASKETBALL The 1968-1969 basketball squad, showing that it had the ingredients to become one of the finest teams in the school’s history, never quite reached its full potential during the season. The team, plagued by assorted ailments and injuries, never- theless upset Hill wood in the opening game of the season and prospects for an outstanding record soared. But for some mysterious reason, still un- known to the team to this day, the squad hit a slump and the team’s record dropped to 4-11. Faced with prospect of MBA’s worst record in the last five years, the team regrouped in the final stages of the season, showing that every member of the squad had the courage, determination, and hustle that will ultimately lead to a successful season, despite the number of wins and losses. As a result, the team won 7 out of the final 9 games, losing only to powerful Pearl and East. Included in the victories were three wins over towering Peabody and two triumphs over perennially tough Ryan. In the 18th District Tourney, the Big Red de- feated Peabody before being stopped by Pearl. This year’s team once again under the able di- rection of Coach John Bennett and Assistant James Tillman, was led by seniors Jeff Peeples, Berry Holt, the alternate captain, Charlie Ty- Mk IP i vyi - ' ■a i tf v l A Coach John Bennett. This year’s wrestling season was marked by the team’s 9-1 overall record, enhanced by out- standing individual performances and climaxed by Bill Davenport’s achievement of state runner- up — the best that any MBA grappler has ever done in the state tournament. Going unbeaten for nine straight matches and boasting a third place trophy from the city tourney, the team’s perfect season was spoiled in its last match with Ryan. Undaunted, however, the team moved con- fidently toward an outstanding performance in regional competition, only to be thwarted on the first day of the tournament by the disqualification of four of its top wrestlers, co-captains Brett Kirk- patrick and Clyde Smith, senior Bud Curtis, and junior Dever Collins. Two wrestlers, nevertheless, Billy Knox and Bill Davenport qualified for the state tournament. Bill Davenport was also named the year’s outstanding wrestler. Brett Kirkpatrick posted the best record with a 9-1 mark. Next year’s team, led by captain Dick Workman and Dever Collins with six returning lettermen, prom- ises another outstanding season for MBA wrestling. With six starters back from last year’s Western Division runner-up team, Coach John Bennett is hoping that this is his year for a state champion- ship team. The impressive list of veterans includes: All-Metro Jeff Peeples, Berry Holt, Barry Bank- er, Bruce Jones, Bill Husband, and Rick Barkley. A large part of the Team’s hopes may rest on the success of number two pitcher Ed White. If Ed can come through in the clutch and if Jeff can put down the big contenders, then this team should not lose. With such tremendous talent, the state championship is well within its reach. First Row: Latimer, White, Ramsey, Tygard, Barkley, Holt, Lipscomb, Tidwell. Second Row: P. Jones, Curley, Carpenter, Fisher, Leonard, B. Jones, Peeples, Husband, Banker, Peerman, Sugg, Cockrill. Led by experienced seniors Henry Walker, George Copple, and Jimmy Stewart, the team also fea- tures Rip Trammel, Dan Buttrey, Edwin Milam, Blair Wilson and Dick Cummings. Coach Dave Anderson has instigated a rigorous training pro- gram in an all out attempt to return the state trophy to MBA. With this goal in mind, the team can hopefully display enough determination to be- come the most successful tennis team of recent years. Matthews, Moughon, Garriott, John- son, Fuqua. GOLF This year’s golf team, coached for the third year by Mr. Rogers, will undoubtedly continue the winning ways of MBA’s golf fortunes over the past several years. Experienced senior Bert Dale heads the group of returning lettermen; Peter Power, Steve Johnson, and Gordon Moughon will provide the much needed experience, while the team can look for strong support from younger boys. The great interest of the players coupled with the able supervision of Coach Rogers should provide the school with a top NIL contender. TRACK Prospects for a bright track season appear bright indeed. After only one meet, two school records have fallen. Bim Glasgow bettered his own record in the pole vault, and Mike Denson broke Phil Husband’s mark in the shot put. Speedster Mike Simon is in top form, promising to give MBA a steady challenger in the sprints. Teddy McNabb is going to be a top contender in the 440, while Dave Alexander, Kinnie Johnson, and Jack Herndon provide strength in the sprint relays. There is no reason that this season should not be the best that MBA track has seen in a long time. First Row: Abernathy, Stifler, Barkley, Brown, Zerfoss, McCarley, Herndon, Nelson.
