THi: GUS D. KUHN, III Editor-in-Chief AARON B. BROWN, III Assistant Editor Published by the students of Montgomery Bell Academy, Nashville, Tennessee. Come, my friends, ’Tis not too late to seek a newer world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite The sounding furrow, for my purpose holds To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths Of all the Western stars, until I die.” Alfred Lord Tennyson “The greatest mistake that has ever been made in American education at all levels, from kindergarten to Ph.D., is to underestimate the capacity of the student.” President of Brown University “Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” Ralph Waldo Emerson I “There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to con- duct, or more uncertain of its success, than to take the head in the introduc- tion of new order of things. Machiavelli I “To use a famous figure of Soc- rates, the teacher is a kind of intel- lectual midwife helping students to give birth to new ideas and insights, helping them to quicken their per- ceptions and appreciations, to strengthen their ability to think for themselves, and to give their powers creative release.” President of Wesleyan University “Let us recall that our basic faith in liberty of conscience has an ancient ancestry. We can trace it back through Christian Europe, and through pagan Rome, back to the Old Testament prophets. It is by no means exclusive with us. It is in fact our bond of unity with all free men. But we are its ordained guardians today.” Adlai Stevenson . . . As the world presses in and knowledge presses out, the role of the interpreter grows. Men can no longer know everything themselves; the twentieth century has no universal man. All men today must learn to know through one another ... to compre- hend at second hand. John F. Kennedy National Merit Finalists: Seated in car, JOHN BRITTINGHAM, PAUL WORLEY, BOB LOGHTE, AARON BROWN, seated on side of cari BEN BYRD, STEVE NEFF, BILL CALDWELL, RICK LEVY, and MIKE HEAD. The best thing ... is to leam something. That is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night, listening to the disorder of your veins. . . . There is only one thing for it then — to leam. T. H. White Valedictorian: STEVEN CLARK NEFF Salutatorian : AARON BURR BROWN, III In grateful recognition of Mrs. Justin Potter: Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations. . . . They have no cause of their own to plead, but while they enlighten and sustain the reader his common sense will not refuse them. Henry David Thoreau She walks in beauty , like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes: Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. PAUL SLOAN MR. JAMES TILLMAN MR. MARK WATSON “I am a part of all that I have met; Yet all experience is an arch Where through Gleams that untraveled world whose margin fades Forever and forever when I move. How dull it is to pause, to make an end, To rust unburnished, not to shine in use As though to breathe were life!” Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Ulysses” lucid- ly explicates the life of a young teacher. That a man must be an intricate cognizant part of all he has met is vital to a signif- icant life, and that a man must serve life is an intrinsic for meaningful existence. These seven young teachers are the heart of Montgomery Bell Academy and of, in- deed, our entire society, for they exemplify a future where self-sacrifice and intellec- tual giving will be the established order. All things are possible to him that believes.” These few words, written on the play-books for the 1967 MBA football team, are representative of the attitude of Head Coach Tommy Owen. This same attitude has been instilled in each and every boy who has played under him. This is the spirit that has permeated the big Red athletic teams during Coach Owen’s years on The Hill and has brought MBA to athletic prominence. It is only fitting that, in this signal year of a state championship and his 100th victory, that we give especial recognition to a truly great man — Coach Owen. Organizations •V Honor Council The Honor Council was founded in 1945 by the boys themselves to discourage dishonesty in the school. Composed of boys from all grades, the Honor Council, independent of the faculty, tries all offenses of lying, cheating, and stealing. The Honor Council ever strives to promote the highest standards of honor in the school. ROW ONE: Murphy, Nesbitt, Peerman, Power. ROW TWO: Harlan, Garriott, Ramsey, Whitson. ROW THREE: Mabry, Brown, Herbert, Haury, President; Sutton. ROW ONE: Nelson, McGarley, Frist, Floyd. ROW TWO: Peerman, Alexander, Riddell, Milam. ROW THREE: Summers, Rose, Roady, President; Banker. ROW FOUR: Pirkle, Peeples, Tidwell, Gibson. The officers of each of the four classes compDse the Student Council. This body of responsible young men investigates and judges disciplinary offenses to make recommendations to the faculty, represents student opinion on matters of policy, aids the faculty in the administration of the school, and deals with the various campus prob- lems. Student Council David Salmon, Brett Kirkpatrick, Barrett Sutton, Chris Riddell, Steve Neff, Tom Roady, Aaron Brown, Mike Tidwell, Sandy Haury, Bob Lochte, Barry Banker. Dr. R. L. Sager, headmaster in 1954, founded the Totomoi Honor Fraternity to give especial rec- ognition to those boys excelling in at least three of the following fields — scholarship, athletics, student government, organizations, and publications. Toto- moi has throughout the years represented balanced leadership and the highest attainment for an MBA student. Totomoi Senior Honor Society To qualify, a student must have three consccu tive semesters in high school with an average of 90 each semester. Any semester in which five sub- jects are carried, he may average 88. The first semester of the senior year, he may average 85. To have been a member in the Junior Honor Society is not necessary. Junior Honor Society A student must have three consecutive semesters with an average of 90 each semester during the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, earned at M.B.A. After three semesters have been completed in high school, students are dropped from the Junior Honor Society and become eligible for the Senior Society. ROW ONE: Dubuisson, Collins, Rose, Apffel, Frist. ROW TWO: Davenport, Kirkpatrick, Small, Magruder, Brown, Salmon, Cop- pie. ROW THREE: Neff, Wall- man, Jones, Wilson Chaffin, Gibson. Nelson, Collins, Murphy, Justice, Mabry. Service Club With its elected membership, the Service Club has experienced its greatest year. Among the duties performed this year are the ushering for football games, taking up money at basketball games, and sanding and painting the new benches. The club has endeavored to raise the cultural atmosphere of the school by showing several good motion pic- tures. BOTTOM TO TOP: Burkhalter, Alexander, Denson, Roady, Riddell, President; Holt, Wilson, Harlan, Her- bert, Peerman, Brown, White, Tidwell, Haury, Nelson, Rose, Banker, Kirkpatrick, Ramsey, Frist. ROW FOUR: Gibson, Rose, Brittain, Chaffin, Alderman. Forensic Club Steve Neff, President; Ricky Levy, Secretary-Trcaturer ; David Salmon, Vice-President. Under the able leadership of its 1967-68 officers, the Forensic Club has stimulated an expanding list of public-speaking activities. It hosted a freshman declamation contest in February, provided many entertaining assembly programs, and gained new prestige in the forensic field. With the strong con- tingent of underclassmen, as well as seniors, the Club shows ever) sign of future success. Debate Club The 1967-68 debate team marked the culmina- tion of several years under the leadership of Mrs. Ridgway. Its greatest triumphs were at the A. M. Stevenson Tournament at Memphis in November and at the Knoxville Central Tournament in De- cember. In the course of ever-increasing competi- tion, the vast majority of the debators received especial recognition in the tournaments. ROW ONE: Levy, Crabtree, Collins, Frist. ROW TWO: Walker, Small, Sugg, Marable. ROW THREE: Kirk- patrick, Alderman, Gibson, Rose. ROW FOUR: Neff, President; Chaffin. Dramatics Club The MBA Players has had the most active sea- son in its history. In the fall, it sponsored a pro- gram by international folksingers Joe and Penny Aronson. After a false start with Bus Stop, the Dra- matics Club members produced four one-act plays: The Ugly Duckling, The Still Alarm, Sub- merged, and The Boor. Those performances pro- vided a fitting climax for dramatics under Mr. James Poston. ROW ONE: Cannon, Salmon,. President; Levy. ROW TWO: Neff, Alex- ander, Testament, Lochte. ROW THREE: Wilson, Gopple, Cannon, Tigert. Big Red Club The Big Red Club promotes school spirit at its highest level. This year the club has sponsored dances after football and basketball games to buy new benches for the campus, to have a composite made of the football lettermen, and to buy a new school camera. The club has also sponsored pep rallies and helped in the distribution of pennants and signs to boost school spirit. ROW ONE : Sammy Howell, Jim Campbell, David Salmon. ROW TWO: Steve Neff, Dick Smead, Gus Kuhn. Discussion Group With a limited membership, the Discussion Group encourages the art of “verbal elocution.” Through an exch ange of knowledge and experi- ences, the members converse with interesting peo- ple who have definite values to offer. This year, the Group has visited Mr. Paul Sloan, discussing his experiences in the West, and Mr. Jim Leason, discussing his writing for the Ford Foundation. I Photography Club The Photography Club has been able to provide interested students with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of photography. Through the required monthly assignments, a student is taught to budget his time to be able to take, develop, and print his own photographs. This club is one which demands its members to work and learn in so doing. The M.B.A. Chorus has proven itself to be a worthwhile addition to the school’s curriculum. Di- rected by Mr. Gregory Colson, the Chorus makes several appearances at MBA each year, along with various other engagements outside of school, such as those at Harpeth Hall and the Alumni Banquet. Chorus 0 The Bell Ring er The Bell Ringer reflected the creativity and imagination of a talented student body. While its literary or cultural valu is ever in question, its ca- pacity for entertainment is not. For every school function from skin-giving to dedication of the new library, the Bell Ringer has provided coverage if not assistance. It thus remains MBA’s most gen- uine outlet of student opinion. Not only the second straight NIL Championship, but a State Championship as well. Not only the nil’s MVP, but a high school All-American. The Red rolled high and hard, and they provided the school with a never-to-be forgotten spirit of ac- complishment. Co-captains Sandy Haury and Tommy Roady. Tom Roady ran th e opening kick-off back 81 yards for the first MBA touchdown. Ph ' orn then on the Big Red moved the ball almost at will. The Red de- fense intercepted seven Tiger passes for an NIL record. M.B.A. PEARL On the second F ' riday night of the season, MBA was invaded by Hillsboro. Any Burro hopes of an upset were quickly dispelled as the Big Red ball carriers ran for 3 1 7 yards and touchdowns by Roady, Tidwell, and Banker. The defense not only held the Burros scoreless but also allowed only 81 yards all night. M.B.A. HILLSBORO 6 0 0 12 0 0 0—18 0 — 0 On September 22, MBA faced arch-rival Ryan. The tenth-ranked Irish team came on Frank An- drews Field with high hopes. These were dis- pelled by a 28-point explosion in the second quar- ter. The Big Red was led to its third straight vic- tory by Roady, Haury, Tidwell, Peeples, and Hus- band, resulting MBA into the state’s number one ranking. M.B.A. RYAN 0 28 0 13—41 0006—6 On September 29, the Maroons journeyed to Franklin to avenge the only blemish on its rec- ord, a rain-soaked, 0-0 tie in 1966. Unable to shake the “Franklin jinx,” the Big Red, however, did emerge with a 13-0 victory. Co-captains Roady and Haury, along with Jack Weil, led the Big Red. M.B.A. FRANKLIN m- On homecoming night, the Big Red, played sluggishly, watched Overton’s tough Bobcats roll up 14 points in the first half. Trailing 14-7 at the half, the Big Red never lost hope and battled back to a 27-14 victory. Tom Roady, never los- ing poise, led the Red gridders to its toughest win to date. M.B.A. OVERTON Bouncing back from a hard-fought duel with Overton, MBA trounced punchless GlenclifT 42-0. The Big Red had a balanced attack, rolling up 219 yards on the ground and 223 yards passing. In rolling up its most lopsided victory thus far, the Big Red scorers were Tidwell, Husband, Peeples, and Sadler. The defense held GlenclifT to only 49 total yards. 0 19 13 13-45 0000—0 M.B.A. GLENCLIFF M.B.A. HILLWOOD On a cold night in October, MBA went to Hill wood. For 22 minutes the state’s number-one ranked team was held scoreless until Barr) Bank- er scored on an intercepted pass. Before half- time the Big Red had rolled up 19 points. The Maroons were led by Tidwell, Banker, Husband, and Roady as they moved one step closer to the Clinic Bowl. In the most crucial game of the season, the Big Red clinched the State Title by beating peren- nially tough Springfield. After a Friday night rain, the Big Red, led by Roady, Tidwell, Haury, and Denson, came on to beat the Jackets conclusively by a 39-14 margin, convincing eveiyone that the Red was No. 1. M.B.A. 7 13 13 6—39 SPRINGFIELD 0 0 7 7—14 - - , . . M.B.A. ANTIOCH 0 21 12 13—46 0060—6 MBA rolled over Antioch 46-6 to end the reg- ular season 9-0 and assure itself of a trip to the Clinic Bowl. The Maroons went to the locker room at the half with a 21-0 lead, after a score- less first quarter. From then on, it was all MBA, led by Haury Denson, Tidwell, and Roady. 1967 CLINIC BOWL M.B.A. 20 STRATFORD On Thanksgiving Day, M.B.A. defeated a game Stratford team 20-0 to culminate a state-champion- ship season. The Big Red completely overwhelmed the Spartans, battering the interior of their defense for 312 yards. Roady picked the Stratford team apart with 127 yards passing, while Jeff Peeples made many stupendous catches. After a scoreless first quarter, the Maroons came on to score in every other period. The MBA defense, superb all year, played magnificently, led by Haury, Den- son, and Burkhalter. Thus, the Big Red assured itself of the state grid championship.
