The span of fifty ye rs has moved us from one hilltop to another, from a one-room high sohwol to a modern buildini, but we find the same difficult problems to solve and all our friendships are just as sincere. This yearbook is a fair representation of your high school as it is today and we trust you will accept it as such and judge our ef- fort as kindly as possible. CLASS HISTDRY In the course of school life every graduating class has the special privi- lege of presenting its history, history that has been in the making throughout the years the class has been trudging along through the intricacies of the av- erage course of study planned by those who have the welfare of the youth and the future good of the world at heart. The graduating class of Montfort High, occupying the place of honor during the year 1957, is just as well pleased to take advantage of this opportunity as any other class finishing the prescribed outline of work. This class is just as proud of the records made as any other class of young people would be under similar circumstances. While we have not achieved world renown in the time that we have so spent under the protection of this school, we have at least laid the foundation for future activities and we look forward with keen anticipation to the time when we shall make our place in the world. The class of 1937 is made up of thirteen girls and seven boys and to say that the female of the speoie did not have en opportunity to have their own way would be putting it rather mildly. However, they were kind, generous, and considerate. In all instances pertaining to class activities such as class e- lections, colors, motto, prom, and others, the opinion and voice of the boys received due consideration. In school activities both girls and boys have had a prominent part and we must give them credit for doing their work well as they carried off their full share of the honors. Doris Knesting won first place in the humorous division of the declamatory contest last year and Alta Bendorf won second in the dra- matic section. The oratorioal contest was won by Clyde Moller. In fact every member of the class has participated sometime or other during the past years in activities other than the prescribed course of study. We are proud of the members of this class for their loyalty and service during the past year and previous years as well. They have had the right spir- it in work and play and when they get into the games of life they will be bet- ter prepared for the activities there because they have been so well trained in our dear old Montfort High. Going back to the beginning, supposedly twelve years in the past, we find but few of the present members enrolled in the first grade. Some were playing about home and others enrolled in some nearby rural school. Helen Cook, Ruth Heller, Myra Kennedy, Roxy Vine, Therese Yanna, and Vernon Townsend are the names found on the roll of the first grade room in 1925. These six members have remained together throughout the course. Others began with the class but have dropped out from time to time for one reason or another. Before their el- ementary schooling was completed they were joined by others including Cecilia Sikhart, Lloyd Carter, and Jack Stephens, Jack skipping a grade. when the group entered high school they found that other boys and girls had been making grades as well but some of them lived in the country and had been attending rural schools. The class now included, along with those already mentioned,Alta Bendorf, Alice Hulsether, Doris Knesting, Marian Nelson, Beat- rice Sikhart, Mary Jane Williams, Beulah Watchorn, Merideth Durni,John Giltner Charles Johns, Kenneth Mellor, Merlin Moen, Howard Preston, Andrew Saoinson, and Claude Schnaok. Only one member, Merideth Durni, left us during the fresh- men year but during our days as sophomores John Giltner, Andrew Sabinson, and Claude Sohnack decided to seek success in other fields. In our Junior work we were strengthened by the addition of Modesta Lamps of the Fennimore High S.snd Clyde Moller who had been seeing a bit of the world. This year we sadly parted with Mary Jane Williams who is a student in the Madison West High and Kenneth Mellor, e member of the graduating class at Cobb. So passed the years in Joy and sorrow, in sunshine and rain. We are proud of our class and see great things for the members in the years yet to come. Eleven members took cart in the mixed chorus, nine in girls chorus, and two in band. On February ll, the class as guests attended the Junior-Senior banquet. Robert Fett responded for the Juniors. On April 25 the class put on the Junior Prom in the school auditorium with Robert Fett as our prom king. Don Kaye and his orchestra furnished the nustc, EDPHUMUHE5 We, the Sophomores of 1957, consti- tute the largest class ln the history of this high school. Before the loss of our beloved member, Alvin Yerke, we numbered thirty-four. HHe is not dead, Such souls forever live in boundless measure of the love they g1ve,n we have ten participants in the local contest, and Marguerite Hill has won first place in the Iowa Co. League. We have twenty-two in the band, and in the mixed chorus. Our boys won the intercldss basketball tournament. we have four on the team of nine men and two on the first five. Walter Binius ranks third in individual scoring in the Iowa County League. Our class officers are: President, Donald Novakg Vice-president, Warren Hill, Secretary, Marjory Nowak and Treasurer, Joseph Binius. FREEHNAN On August 51, 1936, we, with fear and trembling, made our entry into the assembly Hall to find ourselves con- fronted at all turns by new or strange customs. Soon we were entertained at a Freshman initiation party at which we were made to feel as fresh and green as our name implied. The height of , ambition had ever been to be classed with the members of the High Schooland now we had at last attained that honor. Mildred, Mary ADD, L6ROYv Berenicep Harry, Frederick, Harlan, Glenn, HHPVOM Ruth V., Robert H., Ruth M., Melvin, 1-re111e, Harold and Thelma participated in one or more of the follow1ng:Chorus, Basketball, Baseball, Forensicsor bang, The class officers are as follows: Harry, President, Harlan, Vice-pres- identg Melvin, Secretary, and Mary Ann, Treasurer. Though early records have been lost or destroyed by fire, we hope this history will prove of interest to pupils, teachers, and people of this community. In 1887 the first class graduated under Professor A. F. Prideaux from the building which stood near Hillcrest and the members were Azaria T. Lincoln who became a re-search chemist in Cornell University, and Henry Stevens who is a pros- perous merohant in Sheridan, Wyoming. The next principal was J. B. Logue. In 1889 under Wm. A. Farris Harmon L. Van Dusen graduated and became a teacher in Centralia High School, Wisconsin. He was a young man of brilliant promise and every one regretted his early death. In the class of 1890 under Professor Mr. S.E. Pearson were Jesse M. Van Buren who served as postmaster for several years, and Paul Erdmer who went to live in Africa. J. M. Quick was Principal in 1890-91 and resided here until his death in 1928. Joseph Cubela who taught in 1892-'93 became a lawyer and died in 1935. Then in 1893-'94 Joseph Gibson died before the year was completed and Wesley Preston finished the year.Thos. Metcalf came next followed by Wm. N. Short in 1895. The course then changed to four years and the 1895-'96 school was held in the F. M. Church with David James as Principal and Jennie Osborne Ralph the first assistant. In September, 1896, we entered the new brick building on College Hill, David James continu- ing as Principal until 1902. The building was remodeled in 1899 with greater seating capacity, a library room, and the basement fitted for instruction in science. As the graduates became to numerous to mention we would just like to say that our students went out into the world to fill positions of trust and responsibility including Doctors, Dentist, Nurses, Teachers, one who became a Pipec0rgan Instructor, Musicans, Bankers, Barbers, Government and Railway Em- plyyees, Electricians, Druggists, Horticulturlsts, Telephone and Telegraph Op erators, Supt. of Mines, Mechanics, County Supt., District Attorneys, Insur- ance Agents, Postmasters and Clerks, Master Farmers, Lawyers, Business Women and Homemakers, and one Governor of our State, the late John J, Blaine. Along in 1902 camel1lton0rchard, Principal for three years, followed by J. Goebel, 1905-1907. H. C. Harrison taught from 1908 to 1910 and J, Earl Rohr from 1910 to 1915. Professor Mathis was in charge in 1915-'16 and was followed by P. P. Patterson, 1917-1919, and C. W. Coleman in 1919-'20. On St. Va1entine's Day- 1921, the High School and Grades moved into the fine modern structure occup- ied at present. The Principal in 1920-'21 was G. L. Dyer followed by E.M. Cox A. L. Moore was in charge during 1924-1925 and during the past eleven years C. C. Biddiok has been Principal. - Maud Quick DeLong ' ,'.',sv- f3 1f'??7jl7X'5R5 T.. . ..-.- -f-.W ..1..-11-1 ALUMNI CLASS OF 1887 Azaria T. Lincoln--Teacher--- ---------- ---- -- Henry C.
