Changing from a T formation to a single wing and the return of only 8 lettermen caused the Braves to go down in defeat in the first game of the season. The North English veterans scored 33, the Braves, 6. The Braves chalked up their first victory on the new ball field when they defeated St. Mary's of Marshalltown I4-l3. St Mary's led I3-0 at the half. Monte played one of its hardest games of the season against Coach Stamp's former team, Toledo. Bad breaks and penalties forthe Braves resulted in a 7-6 score infavor of the Raiders. The Braves played a beautiful first half against Sigourney, rolling up a scoreof I9-O. Although they slackened upabit inthe second, they allowed Sigourney to cross the Monte goal only twice. The final score Monte-l9, Sigourney-I4. At homecoming the Braves defeated the Brooklyn Bears 25-O for the first time in six years. With good blocking and tackling and plenty of support from the student body, it was the Braves' best game of the season. By the end of the first quarter Marengo had crossed our goal line three times as a result of fumbles and mistakes made by the Braves. After that, the Braves' defense was at its best and Marengo scored only once more in the entire game. The final score:Marengo 27- Monte O. Mistakes and fumbles by the Braves resulted in a score of I4-I2 in favor of Belle Plaine. ln the last minute of the game the Plainsmen controlled the ball on our four-yard line, barely striking pay dirt on the last down. Tama had too much speed and experience for the Braves' sophomore dominated team. Although the Braves outplayed the Hawks in the second half, the final score was Hawks 3l- Braves l3.
