FOOTBALL Our football season was a definite success, although it had some disappointments, As the team, captained by Marty Engh, Jr., progressed through its season, it became a team to be feared, not only in conference play hilt also in non- conference games, The Mohawks received good and bad breaks throughout the season, but still came up with a record to be proud of at 5-2-I, which could have read 7-1 easily. Our first game scheduled was with Wahpeton, our North Dakota rival, on our home gridiron. As the teams fought it out in a game of games. the Mohawks piled the score too high for the opponent to overcome and came out victors 29-13. Good blocking and vicious tackling highlighted the game. The following week Monte journeyed north to play the Benson Braves in their conference opener, It was a stiff battle from start to finish. During the last quarter, the Ben- son Braves pushed over a touchdown that ended the dead- lock which brought the Braves the victory 13-6. The next game of the season, Granite Falls, was played on the Mohawk griliron. The Mohawks started out fast and completely outplayed thc Kilowatts throughout the game. Long runs and deadly passing cinched the victory for Monte at a score of 39-0. With the Mohawks baek in the winning column by beating Granite Falls, Appleton visited the Mohawk gridiron. As the half ended the Mohawks had the margin, but the always re- bounding Aces came back to pile up a couple of touchdowns to win in a hard fought battle 20-12. The boys practiced hard and late at night for the game with the mighty Warriors of VVillmar the following week. The Mohawks outplayed the Willmar team throughout the game and proved the victors. 19-7. A week later Monte played the Litchfield Dragons. Monte showed enough power and steam to bowl the Dragons over 32-7. The game was highlighted with good blocking, tackling and running. With a record of 4-2, Monte played host to Morris in the last home game of the season. The game was a rumble, fuln- ble affair, but the Mohawks outscored the Morris opponents to win 13-6. The Monte Mohawks traveled to Marshall to play their last game of the season the following Friday. Here the Mo- hawks ran into tough luck. The game was a scoreless battle to the halfway mark, In the second half Monte pulled a play out of its bag of tricks and Marty Engh. a Mohawk half- baek, broke loose on a brilliant 70-yard touchdown run only to have it called back due to a foul 230 yards behind him. The game was a battle all the way with good offense and defense on the part of both teams and came out a scoreless dead- lock 0-0. Marty Engh, Jr., Kenneth Grimm, and Gerald Marholb had the distinction of being selected on the annual sport writers' All-Conference team selected at the season's end. Marty Iflngh and Kenny Grimm both collected a unanimous vote for this team. Marty has been selected for three consecutive years to be on this team, while Jerry has been selected for two consecutive years. The three boys' positions are left halfback. tackle. and end. respectively, Bruce VVard was honored by receiving an honorable mention position as a guard. We take pride in honoring Marty Engh, Jr., our football captain, as being an outstanding figure in football this year as well as years before. He is everything that is expected of a football player. He not only made the All-Conference team unanimously but also had the distinction and honor of being selected on the All-State team. He was awarded a backfield position. Also listed for honorable mention on the All-State team were Kenny Grimm, tackle: and Jerry Marholz, end. Twenty-nine lettermen were announced by coach Marty Engh, Sr. for the 1049 season at the annual banquet last No- vember. Twelve of these were seniors with three senior man- agers also receiving letters. BASKETBALL Basketball season began with the Monte Mohawks losing four consecutive games. But, on the whole, these losses were by slim margins. The team showed they were still in the game fighting and were victorious over an unbeaten Appleton team by a score of 41-38. They beat a favored Sauk Centre team the following week 45-40 and then overcame Madison 28-24. The Dawson game proved a thriller even though the Mohawks came out on the short end 52-45. Neyhart, meets every Friday from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. in room 309, If we attended a meeting some Fri- day morning, we might hear them discussing general school questions, the sponsoring of various clubs and organizations. talent shows, exchange programs, parties, or a school hand- book. Every year our Student Council sponsors thc exchange program, which is given in neighboring high schools. Audi- tions and a talent show were held from which numbers for the program were chosen. Ronald Knudsen acted as general chairman for Monte Day and appointed the various committee chairmen to arrange and carry out the Monte Day activities. v Seated: Kjelsherg, Ross, Bonn, Fraasch, Schultz, Idso. 2nd Row: Nygaard, Handgaard, Schultz, Roe, Hagen.
