They made it all the way to the state final before dropping a hard-fought game to Perry McCluer. It was most unusual that the season's turning point came in the first game. Tim Taylor's field goal, which provided the winning margin over Har- risonburg, drew the team together and from then on, it was mostly uphill for the Maroons. Statistically, the team's leading ground gainer was Doug Hensley and its leading scorer was Mark Dorman but co-captains W.L. Raynes and Mickey Baugher provided on-the-field leadership. The Maroon running attack was centered around the blocking of Joe Reardon and Greg Taylor. In any estimation, a true champion snaps back when it is down. The Maroon team showed its championship caliber in the come-from-behind victory over Clover Hill to capture the Region B title. N-E945 . He also noted that the future of football at MHS looks bright because of the J.V. team play this year. The keys to the 6-2 season record were four players who rushed for three hundred fifty or more yards and a stubborn defense. He pointed out that the team beat its schedule, in other words, defeated everyone on the schedule at least once, except EMHS. The team received excel- lent support from its Sophomore and Freshman mem- bers who were called upon many times to fill in for injured players. Captain Boo Taylor led in scoring and Chip Long led in assists. Defensive stand- outs were Barry Wilfong in interceptions and Tim Workman as anchorman. Goalie Jimmy Miller had two shut outs and held all opponents except EMHS to two goals. Increased spectator interest boosted team morale, making it the best year yet for the soccer program. He pointed out that the Maroon track team won its third consecu- tive district title although they were not predicted to because of great personnel losses. Several new re- cords were established. Candy sales added funds to the treasury, college applications were completed and graduation plans were finalized. To some, four years seemed like a long time to reach the top, but along the way, learn- ing experiences were shared and lasting friendships were made. ORC Being a Senior not only meant special privileges, entering an assembly with the student body stand- ing, and a trip to Busch Gardens but also the begin- ning of a new future. Whatever that future has in store, the Class of '78 has prepared itself to make a mark in the world. 'Y Robin Riggleman Secretary' Jerry Skievaski President' Suzy Raynes Reporter. They have become familiar with subjects and opportunities drastically different from those they experienced last year. Their athletic abilities came to light and they were amply represented in school organizations. Although it was the first year of responsible involvement for the Class of '81, it certainly will not be their last. As the days of 1977-78 fade into memories, I will provide you with reflections of this year gone by. Put me in a special place. I AM YOUR 1978 PEAK. 179 Throughout the year the Peak Staff has worked diligently to create a yearbook which would express the memorable achievements of Montevideo High School. I am sincerely greatful for the devotion and assistance which they gave. First, to Mrs. Pat Early, our advisor, I thank you for all the guidance and help which you provided us. Also to Darla Miller, Debbie Heatwole, Kristy Strickler, and Morina Lamb I say thanks for all the extra work you did to meet the deadlines. Frank Hinkle and Cathy Suter were great help in getting copies and scores. Becky Morris must be commended for all the ad- vertising money which she collected for the staff. To Donnie Liskey I want to express my gratitude for collecting donations which made it possible for the staff to purchase a new 35 mm camera. I appreciate all the cooperation and fine pictures we received from Gentry Photography and Mark Souder, the staff photographer. Finally, I can truly say that with out the aid of these people, the 1977-78 Peak would not have been the success that it is.
