Top Left: Earl Hayes (MHS '79) received a special award for being the first athlete from MHS to win a scholarship to a major college in basketball — Auburn University. ... Awards Day... The 24th annual Awards Day was a time to remember for coordi- nator Miss Susie DeMent and many MHSers. Miss DeMent received a special resolution for her being named a finalist in the Teacher Hall of Fame award. State representative Curtis Smith pre- sented the award from the state legislature. Dr. Elaine Hughes was the speaker at the event. She gave a humorous speech on obtaining goals using many MHSers as examples.
