Editor And now for the minutes of the last meeting . . The beginning of the 1969- 1970 school year saw student body officers, President, Steve Carey, Vice-President, Rory Barrieth, Secretary, April Easter, Treasurer, Terry james, and Business Manager, jerry Ambrose, back from summer vacations with many new and worthwhile plans for Montesano High School. Two of the officers, Steve and April had attended leadership conferences during the summer and were eager to put some of their newly found knowledge to work. The Student Council started off towards a hopefully profitable year with such goals as estab- lishing a new dress code for the students, revising the constitution, establishing more student participation in school activities, and furthering community- school public relations. New ideas continued to be introduced throughout the year pertaining to school government and other related activities. Thinking towards the fuuire, the council attempted to create an interest in and a knowledge of the bond levy, which proposed the building of a new gymnasium and general school reno- vation, throughout the community. These facilities would indeed be an asset to Montesano High School for years to come. Throughout the year the Student Council strived to work towards bettering Montesano High School. The council sought not to initiate change for change 's sake, but rather to establish changes where there was a need for them, in order to keep the school running smoothly, and the students and teachers working together. This year the Bulldog consisted of a rather small, inexperienced staff. However, what we lacked in experience, we tried to make up with our eagerness to lern. Although the first issue was a near dis- aster, the papexddefinitely improved as time went on. The Bulldog is the voice of MHS, and it was hoped that when the Bulldog barked, it would be heard loud and clear. It has been our pleasure to have served the Montesano Student Body during the '69- '70 year. We made signs, were guardian angels for boys who turned out for sports and backed our teams at every game and match. We tried to promote school spirit which was very low during the first few months of school. Homecoming was our big dance. It was a lot of work but everyone had a enjoy- able time. We plan to have a Drill Team cabinet and present our club to the Student Council. Our cabinet, hopefully, will be able to go to the Drill Team camp this sum-mer. The Girls' Club of Montesano High School has tried to make itself a relevant part of living for all its members. With all the changes that have been oc- curring, the Girls' Club has adopted some of them and proposed solutions for others. G Good times are also a major part of Girls' Club. Sponsoring a Halloween C ' Pumpkin Pie Sale was the first main project. Running the concession stand 1 during the football and basketball seasons provided the largest amount of I r our financial income. Our traditional December Christmas meeting starred talented acts from each u class. b S Later on in the year, Girls' Club became busy with the annual Hillbilly Tolo and the Mother-Daughter Party. Cross-C ountry With wobbling legs and an uncertain path to the finish line, the gun signaled the beginning of Montesano's new- est and most distant sport--The Cross- Country. The description of the sport is synonymous with its title, a distance race across country terrain. The journey usually entails a venture through woods, over hills, and across fields in which the runner gauges his pace accord- ing to the running surface. Mud, sweat, aching muscles, and burning lungs, all accent the lonely trot to victory and self-fulfillment. Fresh air, a forested path, and a cloudless sky set a scenic background for wander- ing thoughts on the three mile jaunt. The individual verses the team, climaxes the race as the individuals cross the finish mark. The team with the highest number of places and the least amount of bad points win the meet. Any number of participants may enter the event but each team must consist of a minimum of five. As a novice sport at Montesano, representation barely achieved the minimum. Representing M. H. S. this fall were Owen Barrett, Rory Barrieth, Bill Miller, Rob Haney, jerry McConl-cey, and Don Lindstrom. The distant men completed the season with four fifths, two thirds, and one second. Montesano's front three runners were Bill Miller, Rory Barrieth, and Owen Barrett, The highlight of the Cross- Country season was Bill Millei-'s respectful seventh place at the meet held at St. Martins. Although letter awards were not presented at the close of this season, the tracksters will be given credit toward their varsity track letter this spring and hope of Cross- Country awards next fall. 56 Q mn.: E -an MQ WRESTLING 1969-70 Jerry Felton 1 94 lb s. 1 1 1 Bob Crick 148 lbs. In s ' ' y to emphasize the radical - the non - representative minority who choose a destructive or militant means of gaining attention. By way of contrast, may we mention of few of the things which are much more representative of the youth of our day. During the past year, members of the Montesano High School have participated in service activities which included the following: A March of Dimes Stewart Kidney Fund Q Assisted with the Blood Mobile work Worked tirelessly for the passage of the School bond levy. In fact, despite all rumors to the contrary, there are still a great many young people with high ideals, good morals, a desire to service their fellow man and a sense of their responsibility as good citizens. Our expectations and hopes' are high for you -- the field is unlimited -- and we are confident that you will be able to meet the challenge Very capably. Best wishes to you as you leave high school and prepare to enter even broader avenues of service.
