After taking a stroll around School and in- quiring about, we find that the faculty had a Christmas party where all of the faculty and their wives and husbands attended. The party was held in the home economics room which was gaily decorated with Christmas trimmings. By the looks of the snap it seems that they all had plenty to eat. Glancing up at the pictures again we find .1 group of fellows, seemingly dressed in basketball uniforms, playing basketball-could that be some PLIQA' 'VH KOS 6672114 of our faculty members, playing Shelton faculty in january? Oh excuse me, the weatherman inter- fered with a snowstorm and we did not get that picture after all because of our dead line, so we had to substitute a picture of the faculty observ- ing an assembly. But anyway the game was played in March with a score of Shelton 52 and Montc- sano 41, and the faculty made a charming appear- ance. just one last glimpse t:lls us that Mr. Ryan does an awful lot of reading or is he just collecting paper for a paper drive? He locks as if he's en- joying it anyway. ,Af Zn. . v 1 gi , CUUN fL Q.. 'V' ,vw fvx 3 . L . ps gressive groups in the past few years. we the Senior Class of 1952, leave the ex eriences of the vast t P i behind us to face problems of the future. ln the fall of 1948, we entered upon our high school careers. We managed to come through the year with flying colors, under the leadership of our devoted adviser, Mr. john Terrey, who was to keep this title until the senior year. Qur capable class oflicers: Roland Poundstone, president: Bob Ryser, vice president: julia Ann Bogdanovich, sec- retaryg Eilleen Smith, treasurer, Pete Rasmussen, stud'nt council representative, and Birdie Stegall, social representative. As we came back to school the following fall we had thankfully passed on our title of fresh- men to the incoming class and had become known as sophomores. XVe immediately swung into action by electing Carmen Riley, president: Marian Rock- well, vice presidentg Jeanne Kiliz, secretary: Dar- lene Smith, treasurer: Benny Giuhn, social repre- s'ntative. The highlight of the year occurred on March 24th. This was the date of the very successful Sophomore Hop, a barn-dance of Ginghams and jeans. A true Western feeling prevailed and all enjoyed a good time. Displaying the same enthusiasm that had made our previous years successful, we came back as upper classmen after a three months vacation. Cioverned by Jeanne Kiliz, presidentg Katie Schmidt, vice president: Donna Arnold, secrctaryg Donna West, treasurer: and Wayfne Calhoun, stu- dent council representative, we stood out in extra- curricular as well as curricular activities. The event of that year which remains most vivid in our minds is our junior Prom, with the theme, Blue Hawaii. NVe labored long hours on the dec- orations, but the success of our undertaking more than mad: up for the energy lost. an Fnurh-rn By the following fall we had reached the final step on the ladder of our high school careers. For ltadership we elected Pete Rasmussen, presi- cltntg Roland Poundstone, vice presidentg Birdie Stegall, secretaryg Barbara Mousel, treasurer, Mar- vin Manley, student council representative: and Bob Dierick, social representative. The last big social event of our high school career, The Senior Ball, took place on November 30. We chose the theme A Little Bit of Heaven and we, at least, considered the affair just that. Under Miss Savage's guidance, we presented our Senior Play. lt was enjoyed by the audience and will long be remembered by us. Throughout our high school career, we were a sports-minded group. Since our freshman year we have watched boys from our class make fine names for themselves on the gridiron, maple court, cin- ders and diamond. Climaxing their high school career, Marvin Manley and Bob Dierick were voted honorary co-captains in football: and Albert Rich- ards made honorary captain in track. Many girls turned out for G.A.C. during at least part of their sshool days. The public was aware of our dramatic abilities, also. Outstanding in this field were jim McLean, Albert Richards, Lois Vincent and Pete Rasmussen. lt is evident that we enjoy music when one real- izes that over three-fourths of the class, at one time or another, was enrolled in chorus or band or both. Nor did we neglect curricular activities. We always had a nice percentage of the class on the honor roll. not to mention the many names ap- pearing on the perfect attendance list. W'ith this record of us written in the past, we, the Class of 1952, move on to meet the future. We would like to thank our adviser Mrs. Floyd, the faculty, our parents, and all of you who have made our stay here at M.H.S. both profitable and happy. Pi-lay you not forget us. We won't forget you. One look at the roll call in band and chorus verifies the fact. juniors have participated in octets, trios and many other ensembles. Their solo ability is unexcelled. At the first bounce of the ball announcing the start of basketball season, Stuart Sandberg, jim Brown and -lim Briscoe were eager and willing at turnouts. Several other juniors had to abandon their dreams of personal victories on the maple court because of injuries. But they, along with the lettermen, will have .mother chance next year. Boys who had not turned out for the two previous sports found their chance to shine in baseball and track. jim Brown, Kenny Copeland, Don Murphie. Fred Simp- son and Harold Hopper proved to be very competent baseball men while jim Briscoe represented the juniors on the track squad. The girls of the class were not to be outdone in the field of sports. G.A.CQ. turnouts found them always prompt and ready. At the middle of the year, the juniors sponsored a dance after the Elma game called the Snowtlake Folly. lt featured a unique decoration idea. The guests made the decorations of snowflakes and then were awarded prizes for the best ones. The big event of the year came when the date of the annual junior Prom was announced. lfor the theme of the dance, the juniors chose Realm of Mystery. This name was used to suggest the wondrous aspects of under- the-sea life. The class is credited with much hard work and cooperation in making their Prom a success. Thus approaching the end of their third year. the junior class has a remarkable record to look back on. Their accomplishments are many and their ability yet untapped. In the all important year ahead may their achievements be greater still and their every goal reached through their own initiative. W Sf-ff The year 1951-1952 was a most enjoyable and unforgettable year for the members of the pep staff at Monte High. The long bus trips and the anticipation of meeting the members of the yell staffs from the other schools were interesting ex- periences. NX'e were glad to welcome back Marian Rock- well, jim Mclean, Roland Poundstone and Bob Manley from the previous year. Marian again served as song queen with Eilleen Smith, julia Ann Bogdanovich, and Darlene Smith. The yell leaders were: jim McLean, Roland Poundstone, Bob Man- ley, and a newcomer, jerry McCleary. liebruary 29, 1952, ended the basketball season and the activities of the staff. On that date the staff presented the last pep assembly of the year. The program for this assembly included: a talk on leap year by Darlene Smithg a musical number entitled A Musical Date with Kenny Copeland, Don Murphie, Bob Manley and Jerry McCleary: piano selections by Roland Poundstoneg a poem by the pep staff, called To the Game We Will Go , a song by Marian, Eilleen, julia Ann, and Darlene, called Give Us a Little Score g a pep talk by Mr. Acuff. Then jim McLean and julia Ann Bogdanovich gave closing speeches showing their appreciation to the student body and faculty for their support throughout the year. School songs and yells were intermingled with the other selections. The yell staff wishes to give its thanks to the entire student body and faculty for their sincere and loyal attendance at all the school games. Never was the sportsmanship so fair, the spirit so high, or pep so genuine as it was the past year. This was reflected in our rating in the race for the sports- manship trophy. We are, and the town should be, proud of our high score in the balloting. We rose fiom sixth to second place in one year. The pep staff wishes the incoming staff success in represent- ing Monte High. May they always remember that loyalty to the school comes first, whether we win, lose or draw. ffwmalfewi of Sahaal Spud ancf S ' Top RlndPundtn J ry 'Vlflar BbhyN1ane B ttom Eilleen Smith Iulia Ann B xzdan ich Marian R ek ell Darlene bmlth :na 0 sue. er '.f-fe-'y, o ly. Checking books in-out is but a small part of the librarians' work. The duties of these girls vary from period to period. The assistants are constantly kept looking for back issues of magazines, finding a book needed for English. or looking for reference books, but they don't mind, because it's all in the day's work. Many times the paste jar and mending equipment are put to use. The girls can be ssen working away on the torn pages of an English book, or repairing the cover of a history bock, besides keeping the library books in good condition. There is .1 eertain routine that IDUSI be followed in preparing new books for circulation after they are catalogu d. liirst they are stamped with th: high school stamp, and the pockets and date slips are pasted on. The books are then shellaeked and, when dry, are mazked and shelve.l. And they who exceed in scholarship will be esteemed. These pages are dedicated to the honor students- the ones who excel in scholarship. Very few of th'n1 are naturally hrilliant. Most of them struggle and sacrifice and study for the honor of having their names on these pages. But, how are these students honored? They do not work for nine months just to have their names in- scribed on a page in this annual and which may spend most of its existence gathering dust on 3 shelf. No- JI Rall... they take a place in your mind, maybe not an emi- nent place. maybe even a small corner, but it is still there and not to be forgotten. But someday when people look back through thc Sylvan of 1952 and later years and see those funny clothes. hair-styles and old schoolhouse of way back when, they cannot help admiring the honor roll students. They know what a struggle it was for those few because a few in their time may be going through the same struggle. The juniors had twenty per cent and the sophomores six per cent. The freshmen, who have only bcen in high school a short time with the least chance to build up scholarship, have made a showing of fifteen per cent. A junior deserves honorable mention because she, Ruth Byles, earned straight A's. No one else in Nlontesano High School, this year. received that high a grade point average. MESSAGE TO STUDENTS: Some of us learn easier than others: therefore. ggrades are higherg some of us have more time to study: and some of us enter more activities. Can a student enter activities and still be among the hon- ored? Look at the list of these honored, and the answer is obvious. The entrance to the gym was lined with painted sea scenes. The band stand was the shape of a boat, in the center of the room. Fish murals and fish nets lined the walls, treasure chests were filled with jewelry and a false ceiling of aqua and blue crepe paper completed the decorations. Roy Smith and his Royal Knightsl' provided the easy to dance to and easy to listen to music. Sand dollars with the couples' initials painted on them were given as souvenirs. At ten thirty, the blowing of a bugle announced the open ing of the fifth senior ball coronation ceremony. Page Mar- vin Manley read the proclamation calling together all royal subjects to attend the Queen and King. Pages Darlene Smith and Marvin Manley placed the crowns on the thrones. Master of Ceremonies Dick Moore read the cor- onation address calling forth lfirst l.ady ,julia :Xrn Bag- danovich and Second Lady Lois Vincent to serve the queen and First Lord W'ayne Calhoun and Second I.orc Pete Rasmussen to serve the king. Then the moment ar- rived for the crowning of the queen and king. A hush descended on the subjects as they awaited the an- nouncement. Then, Dick called Marian Rockwell and Bob Dierick forward and crowned them Queen Marian l and King Bob ll. Queen Marian was pre- sented with a bouquet of red roses. After the crowning, the newly installed royal couple walked down the aisle formed by their royal subjects to sit upon their thrones. 1 Following the coronation the nonette sang Can I Forget You. Then the royal couple ant: friends joined in dancing for the remaining hours of the evening. Committees appointed to take charge of preparing for the occasion were: thems, Darlene Smith, Donna XVest, Dick Moore Dick Shumway: music, Bill Caldwellg dec- orations, Katie l.ou Schmidt and Lois Vin- centg advertising, Rex Valentine, Albert Richards and Marian Rockwellg invita- tions, Lleanne Kililg ticket sales, Carmen Riley and Albert Richards: entertain- ment, Barbara Mouselg assembly, Phyllis Christian and Nancy Vukich. Serving as patrons and patronesses were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rasmussen, Mr. and Mrs. joe Stegall, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vincent and Mr. and Mrs. Elias Rottie. Friends and members of the families ofthe senior clcss also enjoyed the dance. szaamzfye. .. Many precious treasures, which will be taken out and lingered over with fond thoughts in the years to come, were added to our Chest of Memories this year. W'e shall long remember the assemblies-Student body, national and pep. Looking back, we shall hear the cry of Seniors, rah, rah, rah . . and the answering yell of juniors, rah, rah .... The memory of Stuart Sandberg with an apple on his head while one of the famous arrow shooters stands ready to shoot and of some of the boys after the Hollywood make-up artist nnished with them will always bring a smile to our lips. The sound of carols being played at Christmas time will serve as a reminder of the pleasant atmosphere when we gathered in the auditorium to sing carols before school and during noon hour, the broadcasting of carols during periods, the gaiety of the decorations and the spirit of the Christmas Assembly, sponsored by the Boys' and Girls' Clubs. - .i ,k 4 , H1 We shall think proudly of the spirit and sportsmanship shown by our school the past year. The thought of standing proudly and singing our beloved Alma Nlater will never fail to bring a lump to our throats and an occasional tear to our eyes. The grievances caused by our lockers, which at the time seemed so tragic, will be humorous to recall. The combination that wouldn't worlt. the lock that stucls and the books that just wouldn't fit in the limited space will seem part of the gayer side of school. fXdvertising and decorating for dances was fun, as was attending them. The little vm always seemed more allurin at ni ht with soft music floatin down from the S. , X Z3 S balconv. The Senior Ball and Iunior Prom were es aeciallv glamorous, and the So homore . . T . t P llop was the Best durn shin-dig ever! XVe'll always appreciate the cooperation of the faculty in chaperoning these affairs. The seniors will loolt back on their last year in high school as a busy period of preparation to leave their sheltered school life and go out into the world on their own. XY'liates'er may befall them in coming years. the seniors will like to recall the excitement of choosing pictures, announcements and cards, the senior ball, senior play, baccalaureate, th: picnic, and graduation. The students who have taken part in concerts and music meets will remember these as some of the highlights of their school life. The members of the Bulldog Staff will recall the rush to meet deadlines and many laughs and disappointm.nts in journalism. The Sylvan Staff will think of the good feeling they had when they saw the yearbook slowly taking shape and the pride they felt w hen it was finally issued. These things and the other activities. which make school more than just a place to studs, hase made this year full.
