Fifty years ago M,U,l-lS. had thirty-five pupils. Today's total is approximately twelve hundred. Time surely changes things, The junior class today is an entirely different class from what is was three years ago when they entered as scared freshmen, Next year they will run the school as grown-up seniors. This year's prom with the theme of midnight in Venice was a good one, but the juniors had a hard time financing it because of money difficulties after they lost their snack booth. l-larkjoon Paik and Jerry Anderson were the class presidents for the school year. Band members started the year off by diligent practice for the football game half-time entertainments and won acclaim for their marching routines as well as for their music. The largest half-time show in which they took part was for the Califonia-San Jose State game, which they attended after participating in High Band Day at the University of California. Augment MUHS Band Program ln December the band played for the music department's Christmas Concert. Again, in April, the band presented a major part of the annual Spring Concert, which was held in the gym. Assembly programs were presented for the local junior high schools and for our own student body. The musical organization closed the year's activities, after traveling to the Coast Counties Music Festival and to San Francisco State College, by playing for graduation on June l l. Officers elected by the band members to lead their group were Leonard Canepa, president, Jerry Anderson, vice president, and Pat McDonald, secretary-treasurer. This was a game in which there was no real outstanding individual play for Monterey, lt was a real team victory. ln their third league game of the season the Monterey lightweights fought their way to a l2fl2 tie with the Salinas Cowbabes. Danny has moved from the outfield to behind the plate, Dale DeSilva, l9'53 league-leading hitter, is playing his third year at shortstop and sophomore Mike Artellan is again on first base. Juniors Frank Casas and Ronnie Stewart round out the outfield in center and right. Senior Bob Napoli is the mainstay of the pitching staff, and Larry Feliciano, only other senior in the sguad, covers left field, Dudie Bellecr is at second base, while Raoul Bruno and Torn Cotenas alternate covering third. Opening CCAL play against the Watsonville Wild- cats, the Toreadores lost a heartbreaker, l-O, behind the oneahit pitching of Bob'Napoli4 The Toreadores had numerous scoring opportunities but couldn't get hits at the right time, leaving nine men stranded on the bases during the game, Desprte the fact that the Toreadores lost three prac- tice tilts to MPC while winning onlyone, the team as a whole showed real promise. They were handicapped at the beginning of the season as they were not able to use the ball parks until after 4:30 as the Seals and Oaks of the PCL were using the Monterey and El Estero ball parks for spring training.
