Now that big moment in our lives has come. We are ready to leave childhood behind and take up our roles as adults. For us this may mean mar- riage, Korea, jobs or college. For the last four years we have been preparing for this step while attending Monterey Union High School. Of the graduating class, many of us have been .here the whole four years. We have seen many changes: the building of Treasure Music Hall, additional parking lots, the Tennis Shack, and now the plans for a new English Building. Our reminisc- ing goes back to that day in the spring of 1950 when we came up to view the campus as eighth grade students, not knowing one hall from the other. But not all the changes have been tan- gible. The student body has grown, and many new courses have been added to the curriculum. We remember the feeling of awe we had as fresh- men when we first stepped on the stage and now as seniors, we stand waiting in the wings-our lines learned-ready to take our places on the nbroadwayi' of the future. SECOND LEADS Always on the ball, the class of '54 took active parts in many of the acts during the year. The construction of the Snack Shack at the beginning of the year and two booths in the May Carnival paved the way for their big achievement, the junior-Senior Prom. Deep Purple was the theme of the year's biggest formal held at Asilomar and cbairmanned by Bev Drake. Advising them in their many projects was Miss liileen Brereton. Larry Feliciano took over the spotlight as the rest of the Junior Class officers Bev Drake, social chairman, Babs Krick, secretary, Bonnie Vandervort, vice-president, and Frances Carnazzo, treasurer. helped him to stage the junior-Senior l'rom. 1-'vs Front row: P. OFFICE WORKERS No production can be successful without an etiieient staff, and at MUHS it is the girls of the oflice stat? who keeps things running smoothly, They receive credit for handling such jobs as collecting absence slips, taking messages, waiting on the public, typing, operating the mimeograph and ditto machines, and running errands for members of the faculty. Income from this enterprise finances all the activities of the club. The FIIA, with a membership of nearly 150 girls, requires that each member take at least one semester of home economics. Initiations were held in September and january to accommodate all those who wished to join the group. Members participated in the state convention, held at Asilomar in October, and attended their section meeting in March at Campbell. Positions on the honor defensive unit were garnered by llelmer Scales at end and john Little Rock Compagno as linebacker. Two Toreadores who received honorable mention were lid NVoods, defensive halfback, and Sal .-X, Aiello, defensive tackle. League play began with Monterey trouncing the Santa Cruz Cardinals on the hill-top gridiron. The Toreadores carried their hard-hitting tactics into two plays after the final gun when Frank Casas scored the team's fifth TD on a pass from Sal j. Aiello. Watsonville nabbed the spotlight and first place in CCAL standings in a hard-fought defensive battle played on the Monterey Peninsula College field. Until the NVildcats took advantage of an intercepted pass, the game was scoreless. They then went on to score a second time, blanking Monterey. An injury-ridden Salinas team fell easy victim to the Toreadores, who once again scored after the final gun ended the hall game. The second round of league play began under the lights with Monterey taking the measure of Santa Cruz for the second time. The following weekend the Toreadores' hopes of conquering the VVildcats, whom they outplayed until the final period. were dashed when a had pass from center set up the winning touchdown for the 'Cats. The Toreadores hnished the season on the rain- drenched MVC gridiron before a small crowd of loyal fans, who saw them cinch second place in the CCAL race by defeating the Cowboys from Salinas by a score of 26-12. TOREABABES MEET STIFF COMPETITION IN CCAL Coast Counties Athletic League competition in the lightweight basketball division was dominated again by the Salinas Cowbabes, and Coach Bob Clark's Toreababes suH'ered a discouraging num- ber of ups and downs. The Babes gained con- siderable experience in going up against tough. hard-fighting opponents during their rough 15- game schedule. Coach Clark encouraged the idea of building for the future. and he expects great things from his charges in the next two years. His squad was made up for the most part of sophomores, but several lettermen will return to him next season. Sam Cardinale was the lone Toreababe to make the All-CCAL lightweightteam by choice of the coaches and sportswriters. His steady play was a big factor in most of the league games as he hit consistently from the corners. Mannie Lucido, Dale DeSilva, john Souza, Cardinale, and either Louie Yamanishi or Dudie Belleci made up the usual starting five. These Babes shared playing time and scoring honors with Andy Gonzales, Buster Billante, Doug Sut- ton, and Vince Torrente as none of the boys was consistent in piling up field goals. Individual performances were occasionally out- standing and kept the season from being gen- erally disappointing. Especially noteworthy was Andy Gonzalez' eiforts in the second game with Pacific Grove when he sparked the team in the third quarter to increase the Toreababe lead over the Wavelets. Andy scored ten points in the game against the B Division champions. Mannie Lucido's energetic play was also exceptional. A DRI acorn-s two for ilu' lorcilhnlrcr-. MERMAIDS CAPTURE CROWD Front and center on the stage at Public Schools Week were the members of the girls' swimming group, and once again they captivated their audience. The Spectators' gallery at the hill-top pool has been out- grown as far as their particular spectacle is concernedi A repeat performance on the evening of the May Carnival made it possible for many students and adults to See the show who could not crowd in on April 29. The Success of the swim show is well earned as the girls give many hours after school in the evening, and even on Saturdays and Sundays. to perfecting their water ballets.
