First came the Clean-Up Your Campus Campaign in which the different classes tried to keep their sections cleanest. The winners, the seniors, were given a free invitation to the last football rlance. Then came the Magazine Subscription Sale contest which the eager freshmen won going away. The year was climaxezl by the traditional picnics, and, of course, Senior Activities. We are eager to graduate, but when we are older we shall cherish the memories of incidents which happened in our high school days. We shall remember the assembly and dance we sponsored as Freshmen, and the awed respect with which we regarded the Seniors. How scornful we Sophomores, with our newly-gained poise, were of the Freshmen-how sure of ourselves. That year we sold popcorn at noon and sponsored the most unique dance of the year, the Fisherman's Ball. Our junior year was one of our most enjoyable years. We sponsored a donkey basketball game and a boxing tournament and sold cokes in the Science Wing. We sponsored the very successful Madri Gras Dance, and the Varsity versus the Faculty Basketball Game in order to produce the Junior-Senior Prom at Asilomar on May 27. This year, our last, we sold programs at the ball games, and more or less took it easy, sat back and let the under-classmen do the work. Our Senior picnic was held at Yuba Dam and our luncheon at the Mission Ranch. At the outbreak of the Korean War, several of our classmates left Monterey Union High School to put on the uniform of our country. We know not what the future may hold for us, but we can look back upon our high school days as carefree days. fi Q .M , .. Q, ,H , D '-rv' PM vnu..- W-B-rf-vm Front row: M. Rcinstedt, N. Mignnno, U. The various subject clubs, such aslthe T8cI, the Spanish Club,.and the Dramatics Club, give students with similar interests an opportunity to 'get together informally. Another type is the service club of which the Hi-Y and Key Club are examples. These have as their objectives helping the school and the community, and they demonstrate that fun and satisfaction can be found in working together. i i e at fAeQ6'J0! cw an beef ' 1 I , ' 1 I 3 . Although there were not returning veterans, the team quickly settled down and after a defeat at the Pittsburg came back and defeated Bellarmine 12-0. The Torigdores, after losing the first two games of league competition, found their feet again and'finished the season with a good showing, ending up in second place in the CCAL. Jack Arancio, John Corson, Vince Bevilaqua, Ray Crivello, and Rei Yoshinobu formed the backbone of the Toreador line and were assisted by Peter Lecce, Tom Lucido, and transfer Anthony Rappa at ends. The backfield, spear-headed by Tom Enea, Herb Zimmerman, and shifty Laurence Segovia, was lead by quarterbacks John Coniglio and Joe McNamara. Tom Crawford, Jim Doody, and Leo Gota, who was hampered by injuries, filled in the bickfield. Tom Arcoleo and Anthony Rappa filled the important defensive linebacking positions. From the very beginning of the season at the Salinas Jamboree speedy halfbacks Laurence Segovia and Tom Enea and powerful fullback Herb Zimmerman constantly racked up yardage. Segovia, who is well remembered for his long sprints to the goal line, was later named All-CCAL. Linemen Vince Bevilaqua, John Corson, and Jack Arancio were especially strong on defense and formed a strong forward wall. The 1950 team collected four All-CCAL choices. For their outstanding work Laurence Segovia, Jack Arancio, John Corson and Vince Bevilaqua were unanimously chosen for these honors at the close of the pigskin season. Twenty-one of Coach Doug McNeil,s Toreababes were disqualified from league competition by the Board of Managers for unsportsman-like conduct toward the visiting team's rooters during a varsity game. The regulars on the lightweight team were jim Wfttson, Horace Ferrante. Gene Roncarati, Ray Cardinale, jim Stewart, Doug Forzani, Pete Curatalo, Martin Moss. Charles liuggetta, Corky Wall, Sal Aiello, Don Mytli Nick Eddie Albert. Vince Lombardo, and jim Yokota. C 'Ov' jim Watson, the sensational back and a newcomer to Monterey. scored most of the lightweights' touchdowns during the season. He was ably assisted by Gene Rocarati. liddie Albert, Charles Fuggetta, and Jim Stewart, who was a very capable line-backer as well as full back. Nick Haz ovac and Martin Moss held down the end spots on the Toreababe line an flanked Ray Cardinale and Fritz Myeps at tackles. Doug Forzani and Corky Wfall also proved to be rough linemen for their opponents. The lightweights ended their season with a tie for second place in the league. They won two, lost four, and forfeited two games. Included in the wins was a 51-0 victors over the Salinas lightweights. oliglzfw iglzf MONTEREY Oi-PONLN1 20 . Coach Ed Larsh built his starting team of five veterans, a former lightweight and one newcomer to the game. Laurence Segovia, Pete Cutino, Darrell Sanchez, Charles Howell, and Vince Bevilaqua returned from last year's team and former lightweigh star Tony Cardoza came up to add his share to the scoring. Jack Frost, who played for his first year, showed rapid improvement throughout the season and ended second only to Laurence Segovia in the scoring honors. Joe McNamara, who started the season slowly, turned out to be a valuable asset to the team. Laurence Segovia made All-CCAL and won the praise and admiration of local sports- writers and league officials. Peter Cutino, jack Frost, and Tony Cardoza showed ex- cellent play throughout the season with their long distance shboting, which contributed so much to the Toreador offense. Center Charles Howell, tallest of the Green and Yellow, accounted much for rebound- ing and tip-ins, along with big Vince Bevilaqua whoihustled every minute he was on the floor. Dependable reservists like Joe Panetta, Vince Tomasello, Vince Ruiz, Darrell Sanchez, and Mike Marron who didn't start in any of the games usually played toward the final periods. Even though the Toreadores ended up in the league behind Wfatsonville and Salinas, the season was considered to be very successful. Watsonville and Salinas had two of the best teams in the history of their schools. The Toreadores steadily improved throughout the season, ending up by winning six out of their last seven games. The Babes played good games throughout the season and lost two heart-breakers in league competition by only one point. Louie Canepa was undoubtedly the outstanding man and was chosen All-CCAL. He set a new CCAL scoring record, racking up 96 points in six games. Ray Cardinale was the only other contender for CCAL honors. Charlie Tringali, Bill Iwamoto, Dominic Canepa, John Logan, Sal Aiello, and Doug Forzani also saw action in most of the games and aided in piling up those necessary points. Marvin Ponce has broken the school record for the shot put at 47' SMH and may prove the le.1gue's best, while ,lim Doody, the sprinter, brondjumper and quarter- miler, may go through the season ns the best brondjumper. Laurence Segovin has come within one-tenth of Ll second of the school's low hurdle record and is ai strong threat in the broad jump. Monterey can proudly boast of three outstanding freestylers: Pete Cutino. Richard Brownlie, and Roy Sakai. Franklin Young should improve in the breastroke while Chuck Wilson and Dave Hildebrand promise to be consistent point winners in the backstroke events. Coach John Poskus is pleased with the fine group of lightweights from the freshman class.
