L, 5 , 5 S- W5 it DICK NARVAEZ, CARMEN TORRENTE, DAN GARCIA This year the senior class put on several things that were very successful. In December they put on a very good dance in honor of the Toreadore Football team which won the championship. They also had their annual picnic which terminated the screwy senior week. ' The officers for the first semester were, Lou Frost, president, Dick Narvaez, vice president, Carmen Torrente, secretary, and Danny Garcia, treasurer. Second sem- ester officers were, Ken Kimball, president, Bernard Stevens, vice president, Rose Mary Trovato, secretary, and Ron Roberts, treasurer. W wi IST SEMESTER SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS C, , ,X KEN KIMBALL, BERNARD STEVENS, ROSE MARY TRUVATO, RON ROBERTS SENIORS Still another year is over and still another class of young men and women leave the halls of MUHS for the last time, to try the world and its sometimes glorious hoppinesses, and its sometimes bitter sorrows. This years class is presented with the greatest challenge of its generation, with the world in a state of confusion, confronted with the absolute necessity of peace and yet with the almost forbidding, foreshadowing specter of war and suffering. The class of 48 faces this challenge with a great deal of zeal and anxiety, and perhaps a little fear. Some graduates will go into the services, others will enter college, still others will try to get jobs. All this will be their first journey into the world. No one can tell what will happen to these people, whether their hopes and joys will be extinguished and snuffed out, or if they will be revived, set to burning anew. But it is as certain as the night and the day that there will be always problems to meet and then overcome. On June 3, these men and women will bid farewell to the school that has attempt- ed to increase their moral, cultural, and physical well being. Whether the individual has accepted this help has been up to himself. If he has then he most assuredly has benefitted. If he hasn't then the fault lies nowhere but within himself. Therefore, with a glance to the past and an eye on the future, the MUHS grad- uate of I948 reviews these things with hope, expectation, and determination. The junior sock hop, which required leaving your shoes at the door, went off very well and was a complete success. All of these activities added to the money for the annual junior senior prom. Officers that helped to make the year a success are, Bob Feliciano, president, John Anestasia, vice president, Marilyn Harkless, secretary, and Norma Hale, treasurer, for the first semester, and Ben Dew, president, Vince Maiorana, vice president, Alma Gee, secretary, and Norma Hale, treasurer, for the last semester. Many of the members of the class participated and excelled in sports. Class officers for the first semester are Paul Costanza, president, Joe Gram- matico, vice president, Dolores Nuovo, secretary, and Marilyn Noel, treasurer. The Frosh dance , which featured St. Patricks Day decorations, was a great success and it helped start their bank account. One of the best skits of the year was put on by the freshmen. lt showed a Frankenstein cutting up a fellow student and was greeted with howls of laughter. It was the frosh part of the assembly program. ' Officers for the first semester were Tom Enea, presidentg Lawrence Segovia, vice presidentg Gloria Wasson, secretaryp and Shirley Mondloch, treasurer. The job of the Legislature is to discuss and vote on any problems that may arise during the school year. The Legislature of Monterey High, during this year consisted of twenty-six members. All of the members had been elected out of their counciling classes. Each member attends the meetings which are held every other Thursday, listens to the prob- lems and then takes part in the discussions. One of the important duties of the Legislature is the election of school directors such as Director of Boys' Activities, Director of Girls' Activities and Social Director. L A il 1 BLOCK M Under the leadership of officers and their newly elected director, Coach LaFaille, the block M society took it's usual part in the high schools social functions by voting in new members, giving a very successful block M dance, taking part in the May Carnival, and giving the annual block M picnic. During the past few years the boys who have not made a sufficient amount of points but who have been recommended by one of the coaches have been admitted into the block M , The block M is striving to obtain a new set of by- laws pertaining to the point system for inducting new members. The officers who deserve credit for keeping the block M organized were president, Jimmy Grammaticop Vice president Dan Alberts, secretary and treasurer, Jack Duckworth, and Ron Roberts, who was acting president for the first part of the first semester. f - ' f ' . , , V , . .Z -- '- L5'ii15'is5Si111Zifi?5SlitZEfSii'?i?Ii4i????5i562Z55ii?Q1H?f:HfEL1ii9'riL.. 6. A. A. Girls who take part in after school sports make up the Girls Athletic Association. Under the revised point system adopted this spring, two hundred points, instead of three hundred, entitles a girl to membership. Requirements for all awards are lowered one hundred points, numerals from seven hundred to six hundred, blocks one thousand to nine hundred, and stars four hundred to thirteen hundred. The letterwomen's playday with Salinas in April was cancelled because of rain. They had one successful pot luck supper in May. The G. A. This success is partly due to the semi-annual Variety Show which gives the students of the student body an opportunity to display.their various talents. To become a member, one must be an art major with an A or B average in art and C average in all other classes. Membership is by invitation and it is considered a great honor to become a Palleteer. This organization is under the sponsorship of Miss Sophie Harpe. 0 KEY CLUB The Key Club, under the sponsorship of the Monterey Peninsula Kiwanis Club, has been very active this year and is fast gathering the momen- tum lost during thelwar when the club was dis- continued. The club has had the honor of being the seventh Key Club to be organized, has done a good job of fullfilling its motto, we build . Under the able leadership of first semester president Don Cummings, and second semester president Ron Roberts and the supervision of Mr. H. A. Young- man, the club headed its list of activities by spon- soring basketball game programs, a dance and a hayride. All of these projects were successful. Plans for the future included club expansion and a greater variety of activities. Future clubs will have a difficult task equal- ling the example set by this year's Key Club. MR. yo UNGMAN 416, 619 Miss BRWET Ys. on M HOLMMQ SERVICE CLUB The service club, although composed of only a few members this year has been very active. Once a month the members are privileged to have a luncheon, either down town or in the social hall. The club is composed of students who have been of service to the school during their four years at high school. To get in a person, must have l0O points, accumulated by means of their activity in the school. The presidents for the year were Al Martin and Don Cummings. l-ll-Y One of the most active clubs in the school the Hi-Y' this last year stayed out in front of the other clubs. The club is primarily for boys who are Juniors and Seniors, and has a standing membership of thirty members through out the year. They meet once a week at the Army-Navy YMCA, with Mr. Gordon Downey and J. B. Wilbur acting as ad- visors. Early this year they bought handsome jackets which were the envy of every boy on the campus. They gave one of the most successful dances at the school last year and also they have had two pot-luck dinners and a picnic. The officers for last year were Mike Vucina, president, Pete McKay, vice-president, Ernie Zan- etta, treasurer, and Pete Balesteri, secretary. XJ, l ds L WNEY Miss BRERET oN SPANISH' CLUB The Spanish Club bears the new title Los Conquistadores , and only those who have an A or B average in Spanish for a semester are entitled to membership, and are entitled to wear the good looking club pins. Los Conquistadores have purchased beautiful Latin American and Mexican flggs which decorate the Spanish room. The club is debating between giving a party or a picnic to put the finishing touches on the seasons activities. Officers for the year were president, Anna Costag vice-president George Johnsong secretary- treasurer Nellie Wongg and second semester of- ficers were president Benigna Prietoj vice-president Nellie Wong and secretary-treasurer June lino. Under the direction of Mr. Clifford Anderson it has highlighted this year by presenting its annual christmas and spring concerts. Radio broadcasts, and two festivals at Carmel and Oakland are a few of the activities in which the band participated. A pep band has been present at the football and basketball games, and often helped make the Friday rallies more lively. The fifty-four members of the band have been handicapped this year by having no uniforms to wear at performances. This will soon be remedi- ed, however, as new uniforms have been ordered. Despite this handicap the band presented many fine preformances which thrilled the audiences. lx 5KW The Girls Glee Club had a very busy and interesting season being featured before several service clubs, PTA's, assemblies, and teas. They were heard at the County Fair, over the Pacific Grove City Hall Tower, and on several occasions over KDON. They participated in the Christmas and Spring Concerts, the Central Coast Counties Music Festival and the California School Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Music Festival at Oakland. Featured soloists were Ann Rumetsch, Joy Wilkinson and Joan Allen. Gloria Newmann was accompanist. The Boys Glee Club of Monterey High is now in its second post-war season. Membership has increased from twelve to twenty four. Director Manhire states the next years club will be selective. Current songsters have contributed much to campus entertainment through soloists, quartettes, and full ensemble. YOUNG Tennis Swimming This year MUHS fared better than any school in the CCAL in the athletic championship de- partment. With one championship trophy stowed away already and with two, and possibly three more to come, sports at Monterey during 47-48 were very successful. The footbal lteam won the CCAL crown with comparative ease and demonstrated to everyone that Monterey had one of the most powerful grid machines in Northern California. Under the able direction of Coach Hal Youngman, the team won all their league encounters by not less than three touchdowns. Tennis again can be called a cinch crown for the ninth year in a row, and golf and baseball may be listed as probables. In other sports, Tareadore teams were always up there near the top and never lost to anyone without a good fight. Sincere appreciation and gratitude by the staff and the whole student body, is extended the entire coaching staff for splendid work all season for without them none of the success mentioned above could have been possible. FOGTBALL DICK NARVAEZ -Captain The monterey football team of I947 proved to be at least three touchdowns better than the rest of the C. C. A. L. as they captured their first undisputed league title since l938. ln compiling a seasonal record of seven wins, two losses, and one tie, the Toreadore gridders scored 188 points against their opponents' 92. The season was a personal triumph for Coach Hal Young- man who has left M. U. H. S. to take over coaching duties at Monterey Peninsula College. h Holding down the end spots were big Bob Baugh, an out- standing pass receiv.er, ably backed up by hard charging Bill Harrison. Capably filling the tackle spots were Bill Krebs and Vic Davi, both beefy and experienced. Fast and rugged guards Ed Zubov and John LoMonoco teamed with stocky center Vince Maiorana to round out the middle of the line. ln the backfield Coach Youngman started Al Matthews, Joe Grammatico, Dick Narvaez, and John Anestasia or, in case of injury, little Richard Oyama. Breakaway threats were Oyama and the quarterback Mat- thews, while power was supplied by Narvaez, Anestasia, and Grammatico. Narvaez did the bulk of the passing and kicking, although points after touchdowns were booted by Oyama. Monterey opened the season by trouncing George Washing- ton of San Francisco, 20-7. ln doing so they gained the distinc- 1 xiii! QX if ff A' xxx - 1 fl I . tion of being one of the few teams to stop Ollie Matson, the Eagles' all-city halfback. The following week the Toreadores added another San Francisco scalp to their belt when they walloped Lowell, 13-0. The next contest saw the local boys get a lesson in passing the football from Ed Brown of San Luis Obispo. He and .big fullback Dick Regier led a 13-0 onslaught against an injury weakend Monterey team. ln the first out of town game, the Toreadores had to come up with a last minute 92 yard drive, featuring the passing of Dick Narvaez, to salvage a 13-13 tie with an inexperienced but spirited San Jose High School team. The following week Monterey returned to San Jose, only to receive a 25-7 thumping at the hands of Lincoln High School. The Toreadores took and early 7-0 lead but never again threatened. All Matthews returned' the opening kickoff for a touchdown to start M. U. H. S. on its way to a 24-7 victory over Watsonville in the league opener. The Wildcats were completely outclassed as Monterey gained 227 yards from scrimmage. A 33-7, breather over Hollister brought the home schedule to a close. The following week Narvaez and Oyama led the Toreadores to a 19-13 triumph over Madera in a game marred by penalties. M. U. H. S. gained 372 yards from scrimmage, but lost 150 yards to the officials. The Montereyans turned in their outstanding performance of the year as they swamped a supposedly strong Santa Cruz aggregation, 39-7. Narvaez to Baugh passes and Anestasia cross- bucks were'especially successful ground gainers. The Big Game with Salinas saw the Toreadores pull away to a 20-0 victory after a scoreless first half. After two touchdowns had been made on smashes at the line, a Narvaez-Baugh pass con- nected for the final score. Joe Grammatico was judged outstanding player on the field and was awarded a wristwatch as a prize. The Junior Varsity, under the direction of John Gardiner, boasted a record of four wins, one loss, and a tie. Against varsity opposition they tied Carmel, 6-6, lost to Gonzales, 6-0, and defeated Gilroy, 25-0. The Watsonville J. V.'s bowed, 14-6, while the Salinas reserves were downed twice, 13-0 and 20-0. Bolstering both the varsity and junior varsity teams were Nick Marotta, Bob Miller, Henry Jewell, Frank Cardinale, Pete Torrentia, Roy Drocovich, Harvey Plante, Bob Feliciano, Joe Aquaviva, Sal Solis, Hilton Riley, Don Cummings, Dan Albert, Bert Aiello, Pete Bartowick, and Jack Kelly. Coach Gardiner, who will take over as head grid mentor, announced a seven game schedule for 1948 including games with Lowell, Burlingame, and San Jose. .V Mi,afM,,,,if... .,.. ii ,-'--f.-f. 1 JOE GRAMMATICO, LEFT HALF Jne of three returning lst stringers from the previous ear. L. season with three victories and five defeats, while they won three and lost two in non-league play. The team's performance was fairly good, consider- ing the fact that only one letterman returned from last year's squad. At the forward spots were Lawrence Matthews, second highest scorer in the league, and captain Gus Aiello. Frank Bottaro handled the pivot post, while Min- uro Okumura and Lawrence Segovia held down the guard positions. Outstanding reserves were Bernard Torres, Paul Costanza, Frank Campos, Tom Enea, and Tom Lucido. Prospects for next season are good with practically the whole squad returning. Aly - AL MARTIN ' JOHN LOM0 ACO . DICK NARVAEZ Sprints Quarter Mi e ,Aj High Jump , pf, ll 7 li TRACK Track prospects at M. U. H. S. this year are just fair to middling. The team has a few outstanding per- formers but lacks depth, which is so necessary to win meets. The team is weak in sprinters, although Al Martin- is capable of 10.6 in the hundred and 22.9 in the furlong. The only other sprinter of note is Al Matthews. The 440 is well represented for the Green and Gold by John LoMonoco, who is one ofthe best in the league this year. He also runs the 220 in creditable time. Other quarter milers are Frank Costa and Nick Marotta. ln the middle distance, 880 men are Pete Riso and Dink McCormick. Miler Bob Baugh is leader in that event, backed up by Don Payne. The Toreadores' strength is practically nil in the hurdles with Al Matthews and Nick Marotta showing the most promise. -A A , , 1 A i X , ry r is -SM' .f BOB BAUGH TOM ENEA LAWRENCE SEGOVIA Distance Sprints Shot Put ln the field events one mon stands out. He is Dick Narvaez, who can put the I2 pound shot 45 feet and high jump 5 feet, 7 inches. ln the broad jump both Pete Bartowick and Pete Riso can go 20 feet, which insures them a place in any meet. The pole vault and discus are the weakest of the Toreadore field events. ln the pole vault Nick Marotta and Tom Pottharst are learning fast and in the discus Bob Baugh is practically the only prospect. The lightweights this year are much stronger than last. ln the sprints they have Tom Enea, Tom Silvear, and Leo Gota. ln the distance races there are George Brucato, Ernie Diridoni, and Allan Rough. ln the field events there are Lawrence Segovia in the shot and broad jump. He is backed up by Tom Enea in the former event. Jim Stucky is the best prospect in the hurdles, high jump, and pole vault. BASEBALL HANK KUWATANI JACK DUCKWORTH RICHARD OYAMA First Base Outfield Segqnd Bqge Baseball at Monterey promises to be every bit as successful as it was last year when the Toreadores won their first championship in 20 years. Although only two first stringers from last year's aggregation were on hand to greet coach Leon LaFaille, there is ample strength at every position, especially pitching. As the book went to press the team had shone up well in practice games, but had been rained out of its two league games. The infield consists of Hank Kuwatani at first, Rich Oyama at second, Neno Aiello at short, and Bert Aiello or Joe Grammatico at the hot corner. The picket line is led by Bob lwamoto in centerfield, .lack Kelly in left, and Vince Maidrana in right. The starting battery is lefty Pete Bartowick pitching, and Bob Feliciano catching. Other flingers who take their turn on the mound for the Green and Gold are Dan Albert, Sal Card- inale, and George Lindsey. TENNIS , -... 7 RAY MESSINGER LOU FROSTJ' GEORGE CRABBE 1, l 5' L! -1 The I948 tennis team appeared well on the way to its eighth straight C. C. A. L. title, having won four league matches without losing a set at this writing. Competition for berths on Coach John Gardinerfs net squad is exceedingly keen with Ray Messinger top- ping the list of prospects. Also fighting for spots on the team are George Crabbe, Lou Frost, Frank Campos, Richard Lee, Al Maitute, Ernie Zanetta, Lawrence Chan, and Sal Solis. 0, SWIMMING K DON CUMMINGS Qapfz KEN KIMBALL BOB PIETROBONO Coach F. A. Young's swimming team is probably the strongest ever to wear the Green and Gold. Led by Don Cummings and Ken Kim , e ,ad boasts such outstanding performers as Charlie Jewart, Jack Kelly, Bob Pietrabono, Ben Dew, an Bill Curtis. C The lightweights, who handed Palo A its nd defeat in ten years, feature Chuck Buccino, Rusty Harris, Larry Cummings, Bill Jewart, and Hiitoshi Kono. GOLF F ROY DROCOVICH ' FELIX SPEIGLER JOE KIRBY Golf at Monterey Hi promises to be more successful than any season has been in the last few years. With all of last year's team returning plus some talented newcomers the team should be as god as any team in the C. C. A. L. ' ' y First man is Felix Spiegler, who consistently shoots in the low 8O's.i Following him are Roy Drocovich, Joe Kirby, Nick Marotta, Ben Moody, and Jack Holt. Up to the time the book went to press the team had lost only to Salinas J. C. in a practice match. MISS SHOENINGER ' MRS. ESTEP ANTOINETTE SKALABRIN Instructor Instructor Director of Girls' Activities GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Our girls of M. U. H. S. sincerely enjoy participating in such an organization as the G. A. A. To become a member of the G. A. A., one must accumulate 300 points. After they are initiated into the organization, they are ready to qualify. for a G. A. A. sweater, pin, numeral, block, and a star, by activity in the various after school sports such as hockey, soccer, tennis, archery, swimming, and badminton. Each game played three time in succession entitles a girl to l00 points, thus enabling her to earn her membership at 300 points, her numerals at 700, her block at l,000, and her star at l,400. Different playdays, including a variety of competitive sports, give the girls opportunities in meeting many girls from various schools nearest Monterey. Playdays prove most successful in getting girls better acquainted and friendlier toward each other. . At least once a year, a Pot-Luck Supper is given as a symbol of'memory regarding the last games played between classes, and following the supper, the girls enjoy an exciting basketball game in the gym. Girls' sports give a girl the opportunity to express her thoughtfulness, sincerity, and ability in sports.. Pictures of inter-class competition, results, and scores will be shown on the following pages.
