Heroes of 1940 In every human being there is a spark called aspiration which makes people strive to better themselves and not merely to exist. The human mind is so constructed that it is hard for most people to conceive abstract goals. Therefore, each person must find a concrete example of his ambition and go as far toward it as he is able. Those who represent the goals of our aspirations are individuals who have the courage to be different. There are some people who could be heroes, but remain among the millions because they fear being called queer We all admire Lincoln for his great perseverance and patriotism in keeping our country united. Galileo stands out in history because be believed that his science was valuable above all else, and was not afraid to prove it. Millions of lives have been saved because of the work of Pasteur, the great discoverer of disease germs, and probably the hero of most research workers in medicine. No common man's name appears in any history book. It is the explorers, inventors, philosophers, and leaders of people who make the story of the world.
