The center was high, and Richard Parker tackled him on the three yard line. On the next play James Ellis got the TD. The run for the extra points fell short. Plainsman end John Cummings snags a pass during the Permian game. The Monterey team could move only through the air as they lost to Permian. 82 ’Men Drop Thriller In a game dominated by Monterey in everything except the score, the Midland Bulldogs slipped by the Plainsmen 14-13. In the final seconds a 38 yard touchdown pass from James Ellis to Ronald Bandy gave the Plainsmen a chance for victory. For the second time in two weeks, however, the run for extra points fell short. Jerry Burke Guard Joe Johnston Guard A rugged defense punctuated by tremendous gang tackling failed to be enough as the Midland Bulldoqs beat the Plainsmen 14-13. The Plainsmen gained 355 yards total offense, but they couldn't find a scoring punch. Jerry Garry Guard Jimmy Ray Tackle Clive Lankford Tackle Loren Hamilton Guard Briggs Burnett Guard 83 Plainsmen Win One, Lose One The Monterey Plainsmen opened their District 3-AAAA schedule with a 19-6 victory over the Pampa Harvesters. The Plainsmen rolled up a tremendous 353 yards compared to 189 yards for the Harvesters. The Palo Duro Dons turned the tables on the Plainsmen defeating Monterey 19-12. Robin Byrd was the big gun for the Dons as Palo Duro scored all their touchdowns from a long range. Larry Jones Tackle Dick Parker Tackle The twelfth man. Tommy Ashton Guard Don Tarkington Tackle Gene Slater Tackle Billy Graham Tackle Halfback Joe Viney cuts through the Pampa defense as Monterey linemen open a gap in the Harvester line. The speedy halfback aided the Plainsmen 19-6 win with 95 yards rushing and one touchdown. Ronnie Hall End In a game filled with such mistakes. Plainsman end John Cummings drops a James Ellis pass. Palo Duro downed the Monte- rey team 19-12. 85 Plainsmen Slip Halfback Ronald Bandy, the top Plainsmen pass receiver, catches another in Monterey's 26-14 loss to the Amarillo Sandies. The passing of quarter- backs James Ellis and Buster Hindman was the only factor that kept the Plainsmen in the game. ’Men Maul Bulldogs Monterey, showing its full strength for the first time of the season, slaughtered the Borger Bulldogs, a previously un- defeated team. The sight of James Ellis crossing the goal line seemed to set the pace as the Plains- men won 28-14. 86 Quarterback Buster Hind- man lopes around right end as Butch Thompson throws a key block. Hindman gained 91 yards rushing and also passed for 55 yards. The Plainsmen defeated Plain- view 20-6. Men Defeat ’Dogs, Lose To Rebels Sophomore Chris Galonos gains some of Monterey's scant yardage during the Tascosa game. The Rebels defeated Monterey 28-0. Plainsmen Defeat Westerners For Third The Monterey Plainsmen completely out- classed the Tom S. Lubbock Westerners in the Plainsmen's 21-7 victory. The Plains- men ran 70 offensive plays as compared to the Westerners' 36 plays. The 'Men also had over three times as much yardage rushing as the Westerners. The silver spurs remained at Monterey. Fullback Butch Thompson meets some op- position from a Westerner during the Tom S. Lubbock game. Thompson carried the ball 32 times and gained 148 yards, over one and one half times the yardage of the Westerner team. Consecutive Year Grab that ball! Both Plains- men and Westerners go after one of the Westerner fumbles. The Plainsmen fumbled inside the Western- er ten yard line twice as the 'Men were driving for touch- downs. Ellis scores again! Senior quarterback James Ellis goes in for his second touchdown against Tom S. Lubbock. Ellis also threw to Ronald Bandy for a touchdown al- though the play was nullified by a penalty. 89 Lancers Win District Championship Lancers 66 Littlefield 0 Lancers 0 Levelland 0 Lancers 6 Tom S. 6 Lancers 28 Tascosa 16 Lancers 42 Plainview 6 Lancers 6 Borger 0 Lancers 22 Amarillo 0 Lancers 0 Palo Duro 18 Lancers 52 Pampa Totals 0 Lancers 222 Opponents 46 The district champion Lancers arc as follows: First row; Coach Bobby Moegle, Jimmy Marcy, John Kopp, Roger Banner, Larry Canup, Jimmy Lewis, Gary Clifton, Vernon Bohannon, Jimmy Upchurch, Tom Deilke, Edwin Pryor, Bob Grimes, Richard Montgomery, Coach Ted Simon. The long hours of hard work are completed, and I find myself remembering these days of work that were filled with fun as well as trials and tribulations. I owe a special salute to the staff, the photographers, and most of all to the guiding light of our sponsor, Mrs. Betty Stanley. As editor I also wish to thank Mr. 0. M. Montgomery; Koen's Studio; Mr. Rollin Herald, division page pictures and color picture; and the people who offered their firms for picture settings. These people helped to make the '61 CHAPARRAL the best yet. 288 Reha Bristow Editor —
